We just finished a two hour meal with eight of us having the best meal we've had during our two weeks in France! We saw this restaurant on the side of the road coming back from a canoeing trip and decided to give it a try. We were not disappointed. As a group we tried the pork tenderloin, the duo of duck (duck confit and duck breast), the grilled tenderloin and the Perigourdian salad. Everything was fresh and cooked to perfection. The deserts were enourmous and looked like works of art. We tried the black chocolate cake, the raspberry crem brûlée and the apple tart. The owner could not have been nicer (she was also our waitress) and filled in nicely when our French failed us. We will be back tomorrow night!

A group of six of us had Sunday lunch at Les Pres Gaillardou in mid June.
Good weather enabled us to sit out in the delightful garden terrace.
Service was excellent and some English was spoken.
The fixed price menus varied from 25 to 40 euros.
We chose a menu at 27 euros - 3 courses. But everyone chose to pay a supplement for a truly delicious "due de foie" starter. Main courses were all excellent - pork, confit de canard and fish and the desserts were equally good. With 2 bottles of local Rose wine, the bill came to 226 euros - approximately 38 euros per head.
Not cheap but worth every cent for the quality and the ambiance.

Most facilities were closed in La Roque and we had almost given up when we spotted this restaurant was open - it was 1pm on Thursday! It proved to be a good haven. The fixed price lunch is great value with well prepared, tasty food. Service was efficient, helpful and welcoming. Well worth a visit.

Like another reviewer, we arrived tired after the long drive from Paris. The host at our vacation rental house suggested this restaurant (it was a weeknight in October and not everything was open). What a pleasant surprise to find the lovely, atmospheric, restored farmhouse. Two of us had the most delicious coc a vin we had ever tasted. Appetizers, salads and veg were superb and the desserts are delicious. There is a variety of formlas to choose from, something for every appetite and palate. We returned another night before we left for home and had a similar experience (my DH even repeated his main course, as he loved it so). We felt cozy and well cared for.

Mrs B and I arrived too late to eat at "La Ferme Fleurie", which is less than a mile from Gaillardou and this auberge. Having driven down from Paris (5 1/2 hours), we were a bit on the hungry side and opted for the 14.90 Euro menu. What a pleasant surprise. We were one of three tables being served that evening and the service was outstanding without being cloying.

The menu is typical Sarladaise and we opted for a first course of the Perigord style salad of goose and duck gizzards cooked in the confit method on a green salad with vinaigrette and some smoked duck breast sliced as thin as Parma ham. Really delicious! For a second course, I had the tajine de rouget while Mrs B had confit de canard, one of her all time favorite dishes. Again, delectable! On top of it all, we had our first experience, thanks to the outstanding staff, with that white nectar-like wine known as Monbazillac, to which we have become seriously addicted. For those not in the know, Monbazillac is the wine of choice in Dordogne to be drunk in copious quantities as an accompaniment to foie gras and all foods found in the Dordogne (at least as far as we are concerned). It is also inexpensive around here! Stick a few bottles in your car, grab a few chunks of foie gras, a few loaves of bread and a few rounds of cheeses and you don't have to pay restaurant prices for lunch.

Food, wine & coffee at Les Pres Gaillardou alleviated us of 53 Euros and it was worth it. We were in the area around Les Pres for four days and were interested to see that the parking lot (in early May) was frequently empty while the "Beef" joint down the street was usually full. Beef you can get anytime, anywhere -- the cuisine at Les Pres is a rare find and the service is first rate. We wish it was down the street from our house in Colorado.
