“Would not hesitate to pay a return visit”
Reviewed February 15, 2010

We originally contacted two resorts on Koh Ngai by email about availability of rooms/prices/transfers from mainland etc for a 3 day stay in Feb 2010 - one of these was CoCo Cottages. Within a couple of days over New Year all the arrangements were in place. (The other resort didn't even bother to respond to our email !). The transfer (by taxi and long tail boat) from our previous hotel on the mainland went without a hitch. We were very warmly received at CoCo Cottages and shown to our beachfront cottage. We returned to the restaurant for lunch about 30min later, by which stage none of the waiting staff needed to be informed of our cottage number when ordering food or drinks - they knew it already. This was our experience throughout the entire stay in both restaurant and bar - and shows a polished attention to detail. The atmosphere in the bar during the evening was very relaxed with some good music and there seemed to be a lot of people from other resorts on the beach coming here to eat. We found the food very good - and, again, the request to prepare ours "thai style" (i.e don't compromise with the chilli) was required once only. Our cottage came with both air con and a fan (plus mosquito netting on the windows and a net over the bed) and, in retrospect, the air con was not really necessary. With the shutters open, the room stayed cool during the day and, at night, the fan alone would have been sufficient. Having previously read a number of reviews about the beach, we came equipped with aqua shoes (also very useful for snorkelling trips around islands in the area) and, therefore, had absolutely no problems with walking on the rocks. This also enabled us to walk out close to the coral reef late each afternoon at low tide. There, the water was about waist height and really clear and calm - it wasn't even necessary to use a face mask or snorkel to observe the fish and it was quite easy to stand on areas of sand - thus avoiding any damage to the coral. Aqua shoes are widely available on internet sites (such as ebay) and cost around £10 - a very small outlay in the overall cost of a holiday. The staff at this resort were delightful and attentive and the atmosphere relaxed and friendly. We thoroughly enjoyed our time at CoCo Cottages and hope to return again next year for a longer stay. Finally, try to get up at least one morning between 6.30 and 6.45 if only for a few minutes - the sunrise is spectacular!

We stayed three nights at Coco Cottages, but would have happily stayed more. Reflecting a few of the other reviews, there is not a lot to do here, but for us that was the charm of the place.

Moo and the team were an absolute delight, always so friendly and greeted you with wonderful smiles every time. The food is good - we didn't venture out of the place to try the other places as we were so charmed by the atmosphere there.

We stayed in one of the Garden rooms, which was fine. However, the cottages with air con and your own veranda with loungers did look lovely, I certainly had room envy, so if you can afford the extra go into one of the cottages. The room envy however, did not mar the stay at all. It's a wonderful, beautiful, charming place and I wish I could go back tomorrow!

We stayed a week and really relaxed. There is not a great deal to do. Not a party place but fantastic food and prices. The staff could not have been more friendly and helpful. We definitely hope to return.

Lovely island, loved to room we stayed. The resort does look like the owner had put and effort love and ideas in it. Managed to have a chit chat with Khun Rin (manager I guess) what a lovely girl she is, and the bartender at the beach bar named "porn star". We stayed there 3 nights from 23/12/09 - 26/12/09 which we thought it should be enough on the faraway island but when we were leaving we felt very sad. Two staff were saying goodbye to us in the morning when we about to depart, what a touching farewell. According to the festive season the resort did not get too crowed, in my opinion there are not too many room so even though it was full but privacy still there. Thank you for the memorable stay we wish to be back soon.

We have nothing but high praise for the wonderful staff and excellent service we received from Coco Cottage and are left puzzled as to whether those that have given this resort a negative review stayed at the same place as us!?!

Firstly, if you are after a full on party atmosphere with lots of bars and clubs – DO NOT go to Ko Ngai. The island is made up of private resorts (less than 10) of which Coco Cottage is one of them and has a very relaxed and peaceful atmosphere. There isn’t even an ATM on the island. It is perfect for those who are looking to get away from it all for some rest and relaxation.

The accommodation at Coco Cottage consists of various huts made from natural materials (wood, bamboo, stone) all with en-suite facilities. We initially stayed in one of their “Garden Rooms” but upgraded to one of their cottages later on during our stay as the management insisted on this following an incident with one of their kayaks. It wasn’t necessary but a nice gesture all the same. The rooms/cottages all have the same facilities and are only different due to their size and AC availability. All have fans and mesh windows so windows can be left open without bugs flying in! The grounds are artistically designed - lots of stylish teak furniture and beautiful lighting create a gorgeous ambience. It is very stylish but not in a pompous or superior way. The wooden bridge over the lake full of fish, metres from the sea, adds to the charm.

The restaurant and bar are literally on the beach and serve delicious food and a good range of drinks and cocktails. We noticed that after having wandered up and down the beach and had a nosey at all the other resorts that the Coco Cottage bar is the only bar on the island that plays any decent music. Very subjective I know, but sitting at the bar late in the night listening to soul, reggae, ska, blues etc as the fantastic barman serves tall, ice cold drinks was a definite highlight! We spent many hours here! We also noticed that other guests who stayed at other resorts repeatedly came to Coco Cottage for their food and drinks! Having visited the other resorts, in our opinion, Coco Cottage had the best atmosphere.

The beach IS fairly skinny and as has been mentioned, at low tide the beach is rocky/pebbly and you have to wade through said rocks/pebbles to and from your boat when it is low tide. However, low tide doesn’t last for long and the reef is only a few metres swim away . There is a pontoon to aim for surrounded by lots of beautiful coral – perfect for snorkelling. The resort doesn’t have diving facilities but were happy to recommend dive centres a few minutes walk away. Usual activities are available at the resort (boat trips, massage, kayaking, etc).

I cannot recommend this place enough given the prices and facilities of other resorts on the island. The rooms and grounds are lovely, the staff efficient, very friendly, charming and the whole setting was fab. I would keep this little bit of paradise all to myself but credit where credit is due and the excellent staff and management deserve your custom – go and visit now! Thank you Coco Cottage for making our stay such a wonderful experience and we look forward to returning in the future. P***S***, keep playing the great music!! :-) 8-)

We just got back from Thailand and it was the first time we were there. Of course we don't have much to compare with, but definitely CoCo Cottage is a very nice and pleasant place to stay at.

What we liked was a friendly staff and beautiful landscape there, no need to wear any shoes for your whole vacation! Bungalows were clean and nice. If I am not mistaken this is the only resort with beach umbrellas. At least I haven't noticed them at other resorts.

We are used to starting the day with a cup of good coffee and it was a great pleasure to discover that they make espresso, cappuccino or latte in the bar, though not in the early morning, but that was OK.

What I think could be improved is the food. It is absolutely OK, but I am sure it could be better.

The beach is good. Yes, the bottom is not sandy all the time, but when we stayed there, the most part of the day, the water was high and you could just swim to the deep. When the weather is good, nice fish can be spotted near the coral reef.

P.S. Thanks for some nice music :)

We were supposed to spend three nights here, in one of their beachfront bungalows.
We booked the hotel on the internet, based on lovely pictures from the hotels website. When we got there the tide was out, so we had to walk a long distance on rocks (painful!!) to get from the boat to the hotel. The beach wasn't nice at all, and the bottom wasn't soft and sandy, it was rocky and it was almost impossible to walk in the water. When the tide was all in there was no beach at all.
The staff seemed nice enough, but we couldn't help but notice that they kept staring at us when they thought we didn't see them.

The other guests were mainly familys, and everyone went to bed at 9 PM. It's ok to be mellow, but everyone seemed like they didn't want to talk to any of the other guests. It's hard to describe, but we didn't like the vibe there. So we decided to leave. On the way to Koh Ngai we went past Koh Mook, and so we decided to go there instead. A choice we didn't regret :)
