Description: Mixalios GRILL HOUSE is a family-owned restaurant that was established in 1999 and offers a wide range of dishes with ingredients that are all locally sourced, either from our own farms in Koufonisia, but also Keros and Naxos. Mixalios, our grandfather, grew up in the neighboring island of Kato Koufonisi, where he still has his farm of goats and sheep. Every day, all through the year, at 5 am, Mixalios takes his boat and goes to Kato Koufonisi to take care of the animals and comes back by sunset. But the family also has goats on the uninhabited island of Keros, where they graze freely. Only one fresh-water well exists on the island, by the shore, and all animals descend every day from the mountains to drink from there. Between May and June, Mixalios and his son, Giannis Prasinos, visit the island early in the morning, place a large flat stone on the well’s opening blocking access to the water, and this allows them to easily capture animals waiting to get a drink! Giannis, the owner of the GRILL HOUSE, also has small farms at Ano Koufonisi, where he feeds his cows, free-range roosters, and pigs. All the animals are fed grain that is grown by Giannis himself on his lands both at Ano and Kato Koufonisi. Anna, our grandmother, makes three types of local cheese, prepared from our own cow and goat milk on a wood fire, using a traditional recipe. We serve xinomizithra, a soft, white, sour cheese, which is light in fat; ladotiri, which is a sharp, hard cheese, aged in oil; and feta. Yiayia Anna, also makes rakomelo, a sweet liqueur with raki, cinnamon and a mixture of honey and sugar. Maria, Gianni’s wife, makes “halva” pastry, which is made with semolina, cinnamon, and syrup. It is topped with her specialty, a “spoon sweet” made with fresh carrots. Enjoy your meal!

We went there once for dinner. It is one of the very few restaurants out of the centre, as far as we know. They have a quite nice terrace, though it is a few hundreds meters from the sea. We had a decent hamburger and an excellent roasted goat, cooked in the oven with potatos and lemon. Given also the price, very low for the roasted goat, we have been happy of our meal.

Despite the fact that in Koufonissi there are lots of fishermen, the best restaurant in this small island is the one where they mostly have meat. The lamb chops were simply the best I have ever eaten - the tomato pie as a starter was also delicious. Home made fries and tasty fresh salad completed this perfect meal.
As everywhere in the island, "local" wine is generally awful - it's not real local wine but wine in carton packages: however the rosé at Michailos was better than in any other restaurant (I wonder if they have wine i bottles too).
Finally, their rakomelo is the tastier of the island - we bought 1,5 litres...
It's not true no one speaks Englis.! Maybe the young pretty girls don't, but the lady do and we understand each other perfectly. To speak frankly, I can't stand people complaining about that - learn Greek then!

Went to this taverna because of the raving reviews but we had a completely different experience. My beef was very tough so I left most of it on my plate. My husband's souvlaki was dry and less than average. I saw a couple of other people eating (and finishing) a plate of lamb chops. Probably that's the thing to eat here.
The waitress spoke hardly any English. She tried but... I don't expect people to be fluent in English but if you're running a restaurant it just might come in handy to be able to communicate a little with your customers. After we had chosen from the menu, the girl told us that they didn't have the food from that part of the menu that night. You have to see the funny side of restaurant experiences like this. The only thing I liked were the home made fries. And the cat (not on the menu).

Really cool and d local place. The meat is so good... I even had goat for the first time of my life. And it was excellent. The family run restaurant is very low key. The daughters that take your order and serve you the food don't really speak English but do their best.

You really spend a very nice evening listening to Greek music and having very good food for nothing (we paid +/- 25€ for 2 every time).

The quality of the meat and the attractiveness of the service. Apparrently, this is the best tavern of the port, while the others are rather too commercial with a poor quality of the food. For the meat lovers (it is tough difficult to eat this kind of dish every day...).
