The location is great but the staff is amateur , unskillsful. It s a pity to let those amateurs running hotels and treat tourists even greek ones in such an unpleasant way . Also it is rather expensive for the island if one considers the economic situation in greece right know.

It's hard to describe how special this little village is. The owner put all his soul in building it and it shows. Don't expect luxury, this is a case of refined simplicity. Antonaros, Petros, Vassilis and 'Picos' are a great gang and difficult to forget!

The crossing to the island was a bit rough but we forgot every second of it as soon as we set foot on Koufinissia shore and especially once we saw our amazing home for the week. The setting was idyllic with views over the sea to other islands, the house was perfectly blended to the surroundings and the rustic feel added to it's charm. The island itself was the perfect getaway, with breath taking views and beaches around every corner (well worth a small adventure to get to the more remote beaches as we had a beach to ourselves every day!) The people were really friendly and every meal was like being a guest in someone's home. Turn left for the best beaches (about a 10 minute scenic walk) and turn right for the village - make sure you investigate properly though as we missed the main area for the first couple of days (near the church.) It comes alive with locals after 8pm with a warm and inviting atmosphere. We have incredibly fond memories of the place and would definitely recommend it to anyone wanting a chilled, authentic Greek holiday... all I hope is that the effort needed to get there keeps the big hotels away so it stays this way.

I recently had the pleasure of experiencing Koufonisi and in particular, Gitonia tis Irini’s, or Irene’s Neighbourhood. The name “Irini” in Greek means “peace.” And indeed, this complex of single-level studios is the definition of a neighbourhood of peace.

The owner and creator of Irene’s Neighbourhood is Antonis Mavros, who is sensitive about preserving traditional architecture and design. He built and designed each studio to reflect a previous era where construction materials were gathered from the immediate environment, hence the rooms have thatched ceilings with reeds and wooden beams. The interior is adorned with an archway and windows with wooden shutters that close from the inside. There are no TVs in this neighbourhood, nor is there any AC. I was there in April so it wasn’t a thought, but I was told that in the summer heat, the rooms are cool given that the windows were deliberately set in a way to take advantage of the wind direction so there is a constant draft. The showers spill out rain water which leaves you feeling great and the studios are equipped with a kitchenette so you can prepare your own coffee or food and enjoy it on your private balcony.

The complex was built in harmony with the natural landscape of the island and includes a lavish garden that is wonderful to stroll through. It is dominated by mature geraniums with hot pink and red flowers mingled with rosemary bushes, other herbs and palm trees.

A stay at Gitonia tis Irinis is like going to another world, an ideal place to enjoy peace and tranquility, along with the company of others who appreciate its surroundings. My camera wasn't working while I was there so to see photos visit the Gitonia tis Irinis website at www.koufonisia-diakopes.gr

Koufonisi is a wonderful island to explore on foot. It has spectacular beaches, cliffs and crystal clear tourquoise and blue waters. Pori, located on the north-east coast of the island is a stunning oasis and there is a bar/restaurant called Kalofego, that serves scrumptious meals and thirst quenching drinks in an ambience that makes you realize how privileged you are to be there.

And in the town center, Stella’s Taverna. Everything on her menu is worthwhile especially her cheese pie, fried squid and fresh fish!!
