We choose this hotel over the other offerings on Favignana mainly for the novelty factor of staying in a quarry. However, we could also see from its website that it was a relatively new hotel and is well designed making the most of its backdrop of the four clean cut quarry walls that surround you in every direction. And the hotel did not disappoint on any point.
The hotel is has plenty of areas and seats around the hotel (inside and out) to relax so it easily somewhere where you could relax for the day if you choose not to explore the island. We really took advantage of the four heated jacuzzis and the pool, which are best enjoyed (with your drink of choice) in the evening when the sunset turns the walls of the quarry orange.
The rooms themselves are minimalist in furnishings (not in a bad way) and our room like most on the ground floor have a door out to hotel grounds, where we had a table and chairs.
Other key selling points of this hotel is the staff and the breakfast. The hotel staff were very personal and helpful throughout our five-day stay and the breakfast served in a marquee type stucture beside reception was excellent with great coffee and a good selection of fruit and pastries like only the Italians can do!
The only hesitation that we had was its location which is around 3km outside the main harbour town of Favignana. However, I would suggest that this is one of its benefits or at a minimum not a reason to avoid this hotel. The walk to town is around 35 minutes along a quiet, flat country road giving you a chance to see the island. The main sandy beach (Lido Burrone) is only 15 minutes walk from the hotel. If walking is too slow for you, the hotel hires bikes (and mopeds) for a small fee which allows you to explore the rest of the island. Lastly, given the town of Favignana itself is a small fishing town, you might find that by staying in town also that you might have the town covered too soon on your stay. Taxis are available in the evenings and the hotel does offer a shuttle service, but be sure to check with the hotel first as there was some confusion over its operation when we arrived. But the hotel did shuttle us in and out each night.
As for the town, great cafes and excellent seafood at every turn, which is landed early morning at the pier.
- Official Description (provided by the hotel):
... more less
