I shall disclaim from the outset that we book spontaneously with at 'wowcher' deal.

If you do this: upgrade. Foot the £20.00 and you will not be disappointed. We stayed in a newly refurbished annex to the main hall with views from the small balcony over the Rutland waters.

There are footpaths to walk and when you're tired of that the gym (which had adequate facilities) and leisure facilities are a minutes' walk away. The pool area/sauna/steam room is all very clean and of good size. The pool is 22m in length - perfect for exercise or just lazing.

We only are breakfast at the hotel but it was good so far as mass hotel breakfasts go - a wide selection of continental foods and of course the obligatory fried selection. The sausages were particularly notable together with the on request poaches eggs. Well done breakfast team - even if we did wait a short while for our toast!

The grounds are immaculate and the levels of lawns and footpaths well kept. We are planning a return visit hopefully before summer.

This was our second stay at Barnsdale Hall and it was every bit as good as our first. The staff, our room (this time in the actual house ), the facilities, the grounds, the location and the breakfast were all excellent. Will definately be going again :-)

My partner booked this on a discount voucher as it looked good value and we live fairly close. The Hotel and accommodation is in a beautiful setting overlooking Rutland Water and we had a ground level standard room. The bathroom had clearly been extensively refurbished to a high level and is especially good for anyone disabled. The bedroom was clean and the beds very comfortable (and I'm a nightmare when it comes to bed comfort !) ensuring a great nights sleep. If you sit up in bed make sure you don't set off the help button which is behind ! The phone/ radio are the giveaway to the room original age and belong in the 70s.We don't need mini bars and room service as we still have use of our legs thank goodness. Breakfast was well cooked but perhaps the warming units need to be turned up to keep it piping. The leisure centre has a relatively small pool obviously designed with safety in mind but if you bypass the splash time is adequate. All the staff were extremely helpful, smiling and courteous at all times which ensured our stay was relaxing and a great tonic.Weather was also stunning which made it all the more memorable.Would pay normal price as well.

Barnsdale has everything you would want for a break away. Checking in, Reception were friendly and welcoming. The room was immaculate and very comfortable. Breakfast was delicious, service just brilliant. Nothing is too much trouble for the staff at Barnsdale. The bosses should be proud to have such a good team running the hotel.

After having a walk by Rutland Water we decided to call the hotel and ask about their Sunday lunch price and whether there was any availability for that day. We were advised by Reception it was £12.50 for 2 courses and £15.95 for 3 courses...having 2 children under 2 this was perfect for us as we can never get through 3 courses before 1 child has a meltdown so the option of 2 was great...OR SO WE THOUGHT!! I then asked to book for that day and was put through to the Restaurant who got us in within 1/2 hour of my call.
On arrival we were seated and 2 highchairs were provided, a table was then seated next to us and immediately their drinks order was taken....not for us though we had to wait another 10 mins for that, whilst in the meantime the table next to us had not only received their drinks but had also been offered water and bread....yet still we waited. Eventually our drinks came and our order was taken after about another 5 mins but still no bread or water....Now for some this might be petty but seeing all the other table who have arrived after you being given quick service and you are just the ones left sat waiting, especially with 2 young children who quite honestly would have loved a piece of bread everyone else was eating is extremely frustrating. After waiting even longer I decided to ask myself for bread and water but no apology was given, After waiting 15/20 mins for 2 prawn cocktail starters, I knew immediately this wasn't going to be an enjoyable minute. We had already been here well over 30 mins and only just had starters given, the children would not see us through main course :( So after an eventful meal, I asked for the bill only to be presented with a £60/ bill for 2 x 2 course meals and 2 x 1/2 cokes...I don't think so. I had been charged for 4 adults eating 3 courses. Clearly with your eyes you can see 2 highchairs and on your orders only 2 of everything...hmmmm, after pointing this out to the waitress I also advised her that we had been told £12.50 for 2 courses as well and not £15.95, she apologised and went to sort the bill out. On her return they had taken off 2 adults for me but she told me there was not an option for 2 courses and we had to pay the full £15.95 even though it was their staff who had told me otherwise...No manager came to see us despite there being a Restaurant Manager and a Food and Beverage Manager on duty. I have never been so angry, my husband had already had to take 1 child to the car who was falling asleep in the highchair so I was left to battle this on my own with the other crying. I explained I would never have booked and t hat was their error but nothing was done just " well sorry thats the rules". I paid the money and left...NEVER TO RETURN. Just because you have 2 children does not give any member of staff the right to treat us any differently to the other diners and ignore us and then charge us for their mistake. DISGUSTING!!

You can only apologise so many times before it means nothing.

On arriving we thought the place was great, lovely grounds, views, reception and room. We decided to walk down to the water to find the gate at the bottom locked, so it was struggle over the gate or walk back up the hill and down again. We had quite a nice lunch besides the desert, I've never seen such small pieces of cheese.

After lunch we decided to go for a swim, sauna etc. Changing room only has three cubicles and all three were full of families and pre teen screaming girls so I ended up having to get changed in the toilet (I'm cringing just thinking about it). Children don't need cubicles, they don't have them in school, grown adults do! The changing room floor was filthy with mud and we had to walk over this with bare feet. We had planned on having some treatments but this put us off. I overheard someone complaining that there was no lockers because every child in there wanted one for themselves.

Very disappointed that there was no room service because we didn't want to leave the room. We phoned reception to book a table for dinner, we asked for 8 or 8.30 and was told they'd call us back to confirm. We never received a call and decided to walk over at 8.00 (The restaurant isn't in the same building) We discovered our table was for 8.30 and was told to wait in the bar until our table was ready, it didn't look busy. At 9 pm WE had to ask about our table and then at last we were seated. Breakfast was even worse. we were seated and sat waiting for around 20 minutes for someone to take our tea and toast order, in the end we got up and asked. The rest of the food is buffet, We got our plate, put on egg bacon and a sausage, then the wait, first for scrambled egg then a wait for tomatoes then baked beans. We gave up on the black pudding because we had been stood there so long and the rest of our food was cold.

Such a shame as we had been looking forward to our visit as we both needed some time to relax. It was far from relaxing.

Lovely setting and building, very polite staff but to many problems.

Room Tip: Ours had just been refurbished, you could still smell the paint so I don't know what the older r...

Had booked using a discount voucher for myself and daughter to have a half term treat. I paid for an upgrade so as to get a view of the lake and the room was lovely and spotlessly clean. However, the swimming pool closes for an hour on Thursdays and then we had to wait as we were told it was full. The pool staff were unhelpful to the point of rudeness. A lovely location but none of the details you expect in a hotel of this type- no room service, mini bar, bottled water etc. very good breakfast and the staff there were helpful but elsewhere staff were off-hand. Bar prices were very high and no sandwiches available after 6 pm.

Very convenient location for us bit I wouldn't go there again.

Room Tip: Pay for upgrade to get lake view
