Stayed at Barnsdale Hall with my husband for a wee break for our tenth anniversary.

Gorgeous setting overlooking Rutland reservoir , the complex itself is quite large with hotel rooms in many annexed buildings.

We paid the extra supplement for a deluxe double room with a good view of the reservoir. It had our own balcony with double doors which had a beautiful view of both the lake and the hotel grounds. Stunning! There was a heavy covering of snow during our stay and the wildlife (ducks & rabbits) came up to the grass beneath out balcony. The room itself was cosy, warm, the bed though only a double was very comfortable and had all the ammenities one would need.

The reception staff were very friendly, there is a bar menu and a restaurant one too. On both nights we dined from the bar menu. Food and staff were excellent. Breakfast was also very nice which a large choice of cereals & pastries and full english too.

The health suite was set uphill from the hotel so if you are unable to use steps easily you would need to speak to reception prior to booking so that they can take this into account when allocating your room. The facilities were very clean and everything in working order, having sauna, steam room and jacuzzi as well as a decent sized pool. The spa staff were very professional and I was very relaxed after having a back, neck & shoulder massage. The price was very reasonable, however, I would advise to book your treatment as soon as possible as they were very busy when I stayed and did not have time to fit me in for a longer treatment on the time that I had chosen.

The surrounding countryside is just beautiful, and Oakham itself is a lovely little village with many bars and taverns and boutique shops. I would recommend The Otter Smokehouse for a bit to eat. It was lovely.

We booked this hotel through a groupon deal so it was very good value for money!

Just another point incase this is important for you - this hotel does not provide room service!

Having looked at the website for this hotel I was really looking forward to our weekend away. This was a birthday getaway for my husband. The drive into the hotel promises so much , as does the main house and the reception area. Staff were very attentive and proffessional and it certainly started off feeling like we were in for a real treat.

The room that were given was in the Oakham Hotel - there are different blocks and lodge's around the property - and overall I have to say that this is where the initial impressions of the hotel were dashed. Our room was tiny and I have to say rather tired and basic. The bed was way too soft and bouncy and overall only an average nights sleep.

Odly the restaurant is at the top of the complex with rather poor views ( the views of Rutland water are a lot better from the main house and so I cant for the life of me think why they put it up there ) and also right next door to the leisure facilities. This means that you are greeted with the smell of chlorine as you enter the restuarant area.

All weekend we were told about how busy they were and that we had to get in early for breakfast and most certainly book for dinner, I am again baffled by this. The area for eating is quite spacious however it was not utlised, instead we were crammed into one area and with so many staff they were at times tripping over each other. Twice we had other people's food bought to our table when we were half way through our mains!?!?!

Dinner was ok. Not specatular and there were some odd choices. for the standard as well we thought that it was rather expensive.

Breakfast was good and there was a decent choice but again so many staff who didnt seem to know whose job was what. All is needed is some clear direction and specific tables to deal with and the staff wouldnt look like they hadnt a clue what they were doing.

we did sit outside a couple of times with a drink and for my partner to smoke and when we went to breakfast the next day, even though our glasses had been moved the tables hadnt been wiped over and the ashtray still had the same butts in -we know this as my husband smokes roll ups with filter tips rather than normal cigarettes.

One final note to make which adds to my bafflement ( is that a word!?) is that they do not offer room service due to health and safety?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!??!?!?!?!?!?

The views are great, its peaceful and on the surface it looks like a marvelous hotel but sratch ever so slightly below that and you get a tired conference centre with a sense of disorganisation.

Very good service but limited wifi (only in the main building). Many outdoor sports to enjoy with the family and lots of countryside to enjoy. A car is essential however as the place is quite isolated. The room was rather a flat with all amenities with nothing to grumble about. Cleanliness was standard but could be better. The gym facilities were various but not enough to cater for all residents. The restaurant facilities were good and of high standard. Parking facilities were very good.

We had a great stay for my birthday. The views are to die for and the food is delicious. The standard rooms are just that-pretty standard. Don't expect anything spectacular. The service from reception and the waiters was fantastically polite. The only drawback was breakfast, there seemed be no system with service and we waited 30 mins for our coffee! A bit disappointing considering we took the advice of the hotel and went for breakfast earlier!
It did not however dampen the weekend and I would recommend.

The wife and I stayed two nights over the Easter weekend for my nephew's wedding and had a great time at Barnsdale.
We arrived on the Friday at 2pm and the check in was super efficient with us being in our accomodation in minutes. Our room was a superior (with view) on the second floor and was excellent with a large sitting area with two settees and two chairs, a large veranda, lovely bathroom, large bed and all the facilities you would expect from a hotel of this this class. The view of Rutland Water was excellent.
All the staff were excellent in both the bar and restaurant and could not do enough for us at all times and to top it off we were at all times called Sir/Madam which we really appreciated. A credit to the management.
The wedding reception went off really well and the Master of Ceremonies (the lovely Anne) was awesome and once again a credit to the management. A great day was had by all.
All in all a great weekend in beautiful surroundings and we would not hesitate to return.

Room Tip: Room no 439 on the second floor was great with beautiful views

We stayed over easter weekend. Fantastic room (510) with great views over the lake. Staff friendly and helpful. First morning people were queuing up for breakfast as not enough tables, but second morning they opened up the other restaurant. Not a lot to do if weather bad. The lake has some lovely walks with cafes and toilets around it. Cycle hire also available round lake. Hotel - main gripe was with the system to get into the pool. We rang ahead to see if they supplied towels for the pool, which they do. The entrance to the pool is on the ground floor via a turnstile. To get through the turnstile you have to go along two corridors and up a flight of stairs to get a token. They also give out the towels here, to get towels you have to hand in the room card. You then walk back downstairs to the turnstile to get in the pool. After the swim you have to go back upstairs to hand the towels back and get your room card back again. Also in the changing room the have a machine that dries the swimwear but no plastic bags to put damp swimwear in your bag, so if you have used the hotel towels you have nothing to wrap damp swimwear in. Lovely hotel, great views, friendly staff.

We stayed for a two night break away from the children in late March. It was perfect. The hotel is situated on the lake, with good facilities and friendly staff. Our room was in the modern annex, which was clean, warm and plenty big enough. However you do have to walk, with a coat, to the bar, restaurant, pool etc and for older people, they need to be aware that there are lots of steps. We walked, swam, chilled and relaxed, so much so, that we would go back again, with the children. The complex has time share owned chalets, which you can book online at short notice. We hope to do this later in the year. We would also highly recommend a fantastic pub, The Finch, located on the island in the middle of the lake!

Room Tip: Ask for a room with the view of the water.
