My wife and I decided to go Gray whale watching in Magdalena Bay for our 20 year anniversary. She had gone on a whale trip 30 years ago in Magdalena Bay with a small US company that she worked for at that time. Her experiences from that trip were so special and noteworthy that she had been wanting a return experience for many years.
I researched the available tour operators and decided to schedule our trip with Magdalena Bay Whales. It turned out to be a great decision. From my first contact with them they were responsive, courteous and helpful. We scheduled our trip for the first week of February and opted to stay in their lodging in San Carlo on the night of our arrival and two nights at the whale camp.
We couldn't have imagined a more perfect whale watching experience. We not only saw dozens of whales up close but rubbed on and even kissed one whale. Very salty.! We had the boat all to ourselves and our captain, Miguel was wonderful. Whale camp was clean and comfortable with the entire staff ready and willing to make our time with them special. The food was good and the beds comfortable. We explored the dunes, hiked the trail to the Pacific, met other guests from around the world and had a truly wonderful and memorable experience.
I can't guarantee up close and personal encounters with whales like we had but I can't imagine another tour operator that will be more helpful, responsive and desirous of creating a wonderful and memorable whate watching experience for you also.
Whale watching in the Cabo San Lucas area is always iffy, sometimes you see them, sometimes you don't. In Magdalena Bay you are pretty much guaranteed, and this trip didn't disappoint. Mothers and babies, surfacing right next to the boat. Ask for Juan Carlo as a captain. My only, very slight issue is that the place we stayed was very basic, with almost no English spoken and the worst margaritas we ever tasted.
My husband and I went in February for a 3 night, 4 day camping and whale watching tour. The staff was professional. Captain Marco made sure everything ran smoothly and we were happy. Juan Carlos was one of our boat captains and he was a very patient man and respectful to the whales. We even had the pleasure of going out one morning with Crispin the whale whisperer. We witnessed different whale behaviors and touched many whales. The camp and food was exceptional. Loved the nearby hiking and beach explorations. I was very sad to leave this paradise!
This was such a wonderful adventure for my husband and I. We booked 2 nights and 3 days and worth every dollar. The gental giants came beside the boat so many times and we petted them and scratched their backs. The whale camp was a great experience and the food was over the top. The staff was so willing to out of their way to please us, but the whales stole the show. If stying overnight at the whale camp, be sure to walk the beach (tons of shells) and visit the small fishing village.

Magdalena Bay whales contacted in August to set up the trip for mom. A quick response and good communication for the experience. This is the third location in Mexico for
this experience. Mom and I would rate Laguna de San Ignacio first, Magdalena second.
We had a private tour, I wanted control over the boat in case mom wanted to end
the tour a special at $300. Some confusion on the start time 6:30- 7 a.m. breakfast
was provide believe it was closer to 8 when we went out. The only complaint I myself
have is how the other boats corral a whale. I understand this is so everyone gets
the experience of seeing or petting a whale
I could nit pick about some of the communications issues, confused staff at times. But all the annoyances fade away after spending two days with the magnificent Magdalena Grey Whales. Our captain -Carlos was fantastic. The staff at the camp was great. The food at camp was excellent and plentiful. Even the annoyances with the ‘camp showers’ and toilets fade away after witnessing the brilliant sky full of stars. The tents were very clean and comfortable. It does get chilly at night but if you are used to more temperate climates this will not trouble you. We experienced mis 50’s to 60 ‘s early morning but it quickly warmed up during the day.
