This was the third year in a row we have stayed at the Decameron and as usual, this resort was like going to a home away from home. The service was excellent, the staff second to none and the property is beautifully maintained. We walked the beach daily and enjoyed swimming in the ocean. We took advantage of the kayaks available at the resort and the boogie boarding was a blast. The entertainment was great and the food was very good. An absolute relaxing and enjoyable vacation. We will definitely be back!

Room Tip: Ask for Block 5 if you want the adult only pool. Very quiet.

Service was excellent throughout the resort.

The desk employees were very helpful. First, they put us in building 6, which is perfect for people who wants to relax by the pool. The room was very nice and updated. But we prefer to be where the action was, and closer to the beach. So next morning, we got a room in building 3. The room was a little bit older, but we got a view to kill for! Rooms and resort are well maintained and clean.

The buffet : Fish was delicious. Chicken so-so. Good variety. Took a few pounds.
Thai restaurant : That's where the good chicken is! Excellent Pad thai.

Buffet reservation are hard to get if you're not an early bird. A morning I wait for an hour to be said that there's no more place in the Italian resto. Argghhh

Don't miss the feeding of the iguanas at the Iguana Tree near block 5.

Lively evenings. One time there was a beach party, very entertaining and fun. Another evening, a Rock band show.

Water was warm, but sometimes the flag was on for the jellyfish. Didn't get stung. Vendors are annoying at the beach.

Great location. Bucerias is only a 20 minutes walk on the beach, and Puerto Vallarta's not too far either. You can take the bus to P.V., it's really cheap. You have to do a bus transfer in front of Wal Mart if you want to go to historic P.V. If you stop at Wal Mart 'cause you can't resist (I know some people who did that), what the hell are you doing in vacation in Mexico! LOL! We went to P.V. on Monday, and I think it was garbage day. Go another day!

If you want to use the internet, you can go to Jojo's Cafe in front of the hotel. They have Wi-Fi.

Room Tip: Buildings 5 and 6 are quieter. Buildings 1, 2 and 3 near the buffet, the beach, and other accomodat...

I have stayed at the DeCameron 7 times the last being in December of 2012. We have been there in summer, fall winter and sping. No matter what the season it is always a wonderful experience.
Yes is having low end shampoo supplied is important or a mini bar then don't stay here.
If you want an immaculate resort ran by a great staff from the top to the bottom then this is the place. The buildings are numbered by age with 1 being ocean front and the oldest. It is the last building I would pick but if ocean front is what you want it is right there. We always stay in building 5 where the adult pool is. We usually do not stray far from there but hit the beach for a swim most days. There are always plenty of lounge chairs on the beach or poolside. Buying an air mattress is worth every penny . The gift shop has them but so do the local stores just steps from the resort. Both will fill them for you and they are much cheaper as is everything else just across the street from the resorts entrance.
I see many complaints about the reservation system ,yes it is a hassle so I never use it. A tip on arrival to the restaurant Captain will assure you a table on most nights. You may not get the seating time you want but so what. Getting up and standing in line is not for me. You have saved a bundle already. TIP and your stay will be even better. This does not mean non tippers are ignored, they are not. The service here is excellent on every level. There can be an occasional communication problem but most everyone speaks english to some degree. The wait and bar staff will do ANYTHING it takes to make you happy. Tip or not. I like fresh juice with my rum and every morning a variety is served with breakfast and everyday the bartenders would fill a liter or 2 of juice for my day. They have made me fresh banana, guava and mango daiquiris with the mangoes coming from a tree at home.
The food at all of the ala carte places being very very good. We enjoy the Italian the most with the Thai one being a close second. You will find the food to be a LOT better than you expect. Is there bad buffet days? Yes. On occasion there is the off night, very seldom is the nothing worth eating but it happens. I find breakfast and lunch to be a consistent good to great. Cooked to order eggs or omelet a variety of hot dishes and loads of fresh fruit, yogurts and cereal.
What I have learned over the years is this. Stay in building 5 or 6. This is a couples or family place. If your looking for raging parties this is NOT your place The shows are very popular and we go on occasion. The disco is open till 3 am and can be hit or miss . Music tends to be Mexican but guess what your in MEXICO !!. ON that note, yes there are many Mexican nationals that come here. If this is a issue, STAY HOME. You are in Mexico not Canada or the US. That it is so popular among the Mexicans tells me it is the place to stay. You will not see many at the Riu for a reason.
Bring insulated cups or better yet walk up to the main road. You will find an XO convience store on the corner. A pharmacy next door. If you go left there is a small grocery store 2 blocks down. They sell styrofoam cups for 2 bucks you get 20. They also have lids and straws, another luxury item. Across the street is the" Lavedera": or laundry. They will wash dry and fold your close same day if you get the in early or overnight . The cost is about 5 bucks US. On your way up the street there is an EXCELLENT pizza place. We ate there twice last trip.
Going to town ? Take a cab, it is about 20 bucks each way. If your in a group hire a "tour guide" who can drive you anywhere. Cabs are hit or miss. We always use a driver who is Federally liscensed . The bus is a lot cheaper and easy. You MUST transfer at the Wal Mart to go to PV proper. The bus drivers english is usually better than our spanish. DO NOT book trips from the resort. Use an offsite vendor or book them online. Use your cedit card for purchases, you get the best rate that way. The resort is SAFE 24/7. Do NOT leave the lighted beach at night. Walking the street is safe all the time. Pretty much just use common sense and you will have no issues.
We will be returning in May for a 17 day stay. We have met people over the years who try other places and ALWAYS come back. The Royal is the perfect vacation spot for doing a lot of nothing. Lounging around the pool and generally eating, drinking and being merry. ENJOY!!

Room Tip: TIP !!!! Buy a english/spanish app or book. One word can make all the difference !!

We just got back a few days ago and my husband and I both agreed we needed to write a review. Having stayed in other resorts in Mexico, Dominican Republic, El Salvador, Cuba and Jamaica (both 4 and 5 stars), we can say that this resort is worth every penny. Great bang for your buck.

We didn’t give it a 5 star because there was a slight sewer smell in our area that carried over into our washroom (through a small window). It wasn’t always there. There were a few mornings in which it was detectable. This aside, the grounds are impeccably maintained. The rooms are a little dated but very clean (block 4 is central to everything). The buffet is not extraordinary but the a la cart restaurants were top notch. Two of them in particular, Piccolo and Wok, were outstanding.

The level of service is FANTASTIC. The hotel staff was very attentive, accommodating and super friendly. All of them were amazing but we do have to single one out. We experienced phenomenal service at the Italian restaurant, Piccolo. I believe our waiter’s name was Manuel. If you are opening a high end restaurant and are looking for one-of-a-kind waiters, take the trip down to the Decameron and offer this man a job.

Do not miss the entertainment. Some nights presented themed entertainment (i.e. Cabaret, Rock and Roll). Some of the costumes were amazing. Other nights were more improvisational and included the audience – these by far were the best and very funny. All of this entertainment is held in an amphitheater – unlike some other resorts which create make shift stages and theater area.

Do not miss the Mexican themed evening. Absolutely AMAZING. It included a Mariachi band, Mexican cuisine, an evening carnival and a SUPER FUN auction. During the day everyone had the opportunity to earn pretend pesos by participating in contests. Even the kids got in on the action by earning pesos through kid’s events.

We travelled with our kids. Unfortunately, there was no kid’s complex – a building specifically for kids. However, the kids activity coordinator, Jenny, is amazing and the activities included beach walks (our kids found many sea shells), sand castle building, ping pong, arts and crafts, coloring, and an iguana feeding – not just one, there’s like 40 of them that come down from the trees.

We read some negative reviews which made us a little weary before we left. Having now been there, we can say this - do not hesitate to vacation at this resort. At least half of the people we spoke to had been to this resort multiple times – this is no exaggeration. We met couples who have returned anywhere between 2 and 15 times! We will not hesitate to go again.

Room Tip: If you would to be close to everything (including the beach) but enjoy a less noisy area, Block 4 is...

Ahhh, can't wait! It is just like going home again! Once you have been here once, you will want to come back again and again! We were in Playa Del Carmen in October, 5+ Star hotel and we had an excellent trip, but it wasn't home! We will be there from the 15th of April to the 22nd. Can't wait to see all of the staff and Abel, the best bartender around!
See everyone there, look for us in the pool by building 6!!
