“Royal Decameron Bucerias Dec 2012”
Reviewed December 29, 2012

My 20 year old daughter and I just got back from spending Christmas at the Royal Decameron. We had a fabulous time. Our hotel room was not fancy by any means, but comfortable, clean and quiet, which is all you really need. We were in building 5 which is in front of the adult only pool so no kids running around screaming and splashing. And even though building 5 is closest to the outdoor theater and disco we didn't hear any noise coming from there when we were trying to sleep.

The entire complex is well kept and the staff work night and day to keep it pristine. The food choices are plentiful with 2 buffets serving 2 different styles every night as well as 5 restaurants that you need reservations to get in to for dinner. Indeed, the reservation process was the only negative about this hotel complex as you had to get a number at 7:30 am and then wait your turn to make reservations. You could only reserve for two nights at a time. Not my idea of fun to have to wake up at that hour while on holiday, but, as I say, this is the only negative thing I can find to say about the hotel. The Piccolo was the best of the "reservation only" restaurants but the others were also very good. If you choose to skip the whole reservation process and eat at the buffets only you'll still have plenty of good food. Certainly no chance of starving!

The animation staff are friendly and always doing something to engage the guests. My special favorite was the Michael Jackson lookalike whose name unfortunately escapes me but all of them were very outgoing and obviously enjoy their jobs.

The evening shows were fantastic! Mr. Looky Looky and his (very hot!) dance troop were extremely professional and kept us guests entertained in a big way. Costumes, lighting and music were awesome. We didn't miss a single show and looked forward to attending every day.

To say the least, we were very satisfied with the Royal Decameron and would go back in a heartbeat. I recommend it most wholeheartedly!

Room Tip: Stay in building 5 if you want peace and quiet; building 1if you want to be near all the activities.

A group of 19 friends and family gathered at the Royal Decameron to celebrate a wedding.

The pricing was excellent. The grounds were always immaculate. The staff were SUPERB (Hats off to Claudio for putting together a wedding that satisfied my very detail oriented and picky daughter. Her words, as we left, were "I could not have had a better wedding."). The food was always very edible. The rooms, while basic, were perfect for what we wanted (and paid for) and always comfortable.

The resort went out of its way to accommodate our party member who is wheelchair bound due to MS.

The wedding was absolutely BEAUTIFUL! It was held on the beach just as the sun was getting ready to set, and we took over the Mexican restaurant for the reception (easier for the wheelchair to navigate). Other resort guests seemed to have a lot of fun watching us prepare, and the bulkhead was lined with observers, but they were all very respectful and did not interfere.

The photographer the resort uses, Popo of PopoRazzi, is EXCELLENT! Several of the pictures are so beautiful that people have trouble believing they are not fake! The bride also did a Trash the Dress session the next day, and it was wonderful!

The weather helped enormously by being sunny, with a light breeze, and in the 80's every day. We didn't want to leave!

Do I recommend this resort for a vacation? Absolutely!

Do I recommend this resort for a wedding? Definitely!

been there 3 times in last 3 yrs. Lowest price was late Nov.(under $500). Excellent Pacific sunsets, long beach with a 20 min walk into town (Bucerias). West-end units in Block #3 have ocean view & close to everything. Line-ups for a la cartes are short at reservation counter near Block #1 pool. Block 1 buffet is beachfront with outdoor patio A-1 for breakfast & lunch. Italian restaurant is excellent but sit outside beside the reflecting pool as it's too noisy inside. Took local buses to several towns & P.V. for less than $1---trip to Salulita (surfing town) thru mountains is nice. Lots of vendors & timeshare guys on the beach *** met a young couple who went to a timeshare #meeting# & were #trapped# for 4 hours--DONT GO!! Met several Canadians that have been to this resort 5 to 20 times.

I have been to Mexico 4 times over the last 8-10 years, Manzinillo, royal decameron puerto Vallarta, and twice to the Mayan - grand sunset princess and sandos carocol eco spa resort. Out of the 4 resorts that I have been to, this has been my favorite. Beach was great, pools were great, rooms were great. It also has the besat entertainment of any resort I've been to. This was my best trip ever!

Summary: This is a good solid 4 star resort. We stayed Dec 9 -15, 2012. This was our seventh trip to Mexico. The resort was nice, clean, good rooms, food was good, staff was friendly, alcohol was a bit limited and poor quality, entertainment was for the most part excellent, good location, beach was very good, no Wi-Fi but pay for use internet kiosks.

Upon arrival at the Royal Decameron in Bucerias we were treated well. We were placed in the quiet area block 5 this is beside the adult pool. The room was nice, clean, good size, and had fairly decent beds. The rooms do not have shampoo, small room fridges, coffee makers, or in room alcohol or beverages. This was not an issue for us but it may be important for you and your family. You get one large bottle of water replaced each day if used or you can refill it at one of the bars. The rooms have a safe but you have to pay for the key at a cost of $27 Can/US per week per room. The safe key is available thru the money exchange office. I went to pick up a key and the lady told me to come back in 5 minutes. I said ok and came back in 30 minutes. The teller started to chastise me for taking 30 minutes telling me she said to come back in 5 minutes. I responded yes I understood 5 minutes, but this is Mexico. We both started to laugh as we both understood Mexican time. The money exchange converts Canadian, U.S., and Mexican Pesos. If I recall correctly I think Euros as well. It looks like they charge roughly a 10% premium in the currency exchange process. As a heads up if you are converting U.S. currency you are required to present your passport to the teller regardless of your citizenship.

While exploring the resort we found the grounds are kept very clean and are well-manicured. All of the accommodation buildings seem to be consistent in architecture and quality and all seem to have a small balcony with a couple of patio chairs. Security and lifeguards were present yet discreet throughout the facility. During our stay the average demographics of the guests seem to be couples between 40 and 50 years old, however it was quite a large facility we may have missed seeing the younger groups. 60% of the guests were from Canada, 25% from the U.S., and roughly 15% from Mexico.

The beach is nice and clean and wide enough for a few rows of deck chairs and ample room for sandcastle building and those that like to stroll on the beach along the water’s edge. The sand is soothing on your bare feet. We walked both directions from the resort on the beach for several miles and enjoyed the walk. The ocean is calm and did not appear to have a riptide to be cautious of as in some areas of Mexico. We were able to walk out several hundred feet with no concerns. The resort provides beach chairs for guests and has a number of the standard grass umbrellas spaced out along the rows of chairs so you can easily have shade or sun – whichever you choose. The beach chairs are hard plastic - both on the beach and around the pools. Experienced hotel travelers bring air mattresses to improve the experience with a nice airbed type cushion plus you can use them to float around the pool or ocean as well. These air mattresses are available at the resort as well as in the Town of Bucerias for a nominal fee. If you do not want to inflate it up yourself save your breath and pay 150 pesos at the giftshop and they will inflate the air mattress. They have an air compressor there for this purpose. We learned that when travelers check out they often leave their air mattresses for the use of other guests. Air mattresses that are propped behind deck chairs around the pools have been left by prior guests for your enjoyment. We continued the tradition. On the beach the vendors do come by to sell you various items. We simply said no thank you and they left us alone with no issues. The Town of Bucerias is about a 10 minute walk up the beach to the North. Walking up the beach 5 minutes to the north will bring you to various beach massage locations and they will walk down to the shore line to invite you to their location for a massage. These were $20 or $30 U.S. currency for 60 minutes and came highly recommended by other guests but we never tried them. Maybe next time we will do it.

The food was good. We ate at both the buffet and a la Carte restaurants. Nothing for us was really a “hell ya that was awesome let’s go back” but all were pretty good. Thursday is Mexico night at the buffet. It was good and they have the traditional Mexican Mariachi band rotate from restaurant to restaurant for entertainment. The a la Carte reservation system was not to our liking but maybe it works for you. You line up at 7:30 a.m. and pick a number. When your number is called 30 minutes later you get to book your a la Carte. You can book for that day and the next day. For us 7:30 a.m. is still bed time while on vacation. If space is still available you can drop by the desk after the rush and book what is left until all times are full. Showing up with 50 pesos for the Maître d' also works at the a la Carte restaurants if you do not have a reservation (so we were told, we did not try it). We were indifferent as both the buffet and a la Carte were good. One good part to the buffet was that we were in no particular rush and could relax and enjoy a leisurely meal. Keep an eye on the times so you do not go hungry during the day and late at night. Between breakfast and lunch or lunch and dinner they shut down for a couple hours with no snack bar available in between and everything shuts down by about 9:30 or 10:00 pm at night.

Drinks were a bit of a minor disappointment. Beer and tequila are in abundance along with the typical blender drinks. Specialty coffees are not available. After our dinner meals we had coffee and Kahlúa. This was good enough for us but we have enjoyed in the past a Spanish or Mexican coffee after a meal and we tip well for them. The house wine, both red and white, is downright nasty. The resort is aware of this fact and are in the process of making a transition to other brands of wine. Some of the other alcohol brands were hit and miss. The Kahlúa was great but the Amaretto I refused to finish (which is a first for me). It is a four-star resort so if your alcohol quality is important to you, you may wish bring it with your own from the duty-free. For us we worked around what was good and available.

We attended the nightly entertainment every night at 9:30 PM. The resort has an amphitheatre that will hold several hundred guests. Overall, the performances were very good. If you remember bring the cushions from your room chairs to the amphitheatre. Your butt will thank you. Otherwise you sit on concrete for 60 minutes. You can pick up drinks at the disco next to the amphitheatre before, after, and during the performance.

Wi-Fi is not available at the resort. The resort has two computers that are ‘pay for use’ internet kiosks. You buy time and can do e-mail, Facebook, etc. The resort also has phone cards along with special payphones designed to use those phone cards. At the north edge of the resort is a sports bar called The Office run by a Canadian named Darren. It is right on the corner in the upstairs of the building – overlooking the street, the resort and the amphitheatre (north of resort). You can go to his pub, buy a beer or two and Darren or his staff will give you access to his Wi-Fi code for your iPhone, iPad, Blackberry, laptop etc. This worked for us. Plus Darren and his staff are very friendly and a lot of fun to get to know.

Most days we laid in the sun at the quiet pool or out on the beach. The quiet pool is relaxed with no little ones (children) permitted, no loud music playing, just quiet and relaxing. An iguana hopped in the pool one day. That was as exciting as it got which was fine with us. That reminds me make sure you go see or ask about the iguana tree. There are other pools – the one right over on the other side of building 5 is the one with the loud music playing and then the pools closer to the beach have games, activities, etc along with all age groups.

Just as a heads do NOT confuse the Royal Decameron in Bucerias with the Hotel Decameron Los Cocos when booking or when speaking with your travel agent. We left for Mexico on Dec 8, 2012 and were booked at the Hotel Decameron Los Cocos. This is a sister resort 45 km to the north of the Royal Decameron. We checked out of the Hotel Decameron Los Cocos 24 hours after checking in (we posted a review on Trip Advisor for the Hotel Decameron Los Cocos ). We booked thru Ydeals.com and we suspect the search engine or someone confused the two. The Royal Decameron is a solid four star and the Hotel Decameron Los Cocos is between a 2-3 star. Depends what you are looking for as they are very different. So just a heads up when booking do not confuse the two resorts called "Decameron".

Hotel is very clean, rooms too! Service is amazing! Beach goes on and on, great for walks. Food is ok... Lots of a la carte restaurants. Got to go to counter very early to book. Like 7.00 a.m. For the day or next day. Drinks so watered down, needed to go to store to get wine and liquor. Wine is terrible!!! Bring your own... Entertainment is very good! Not a 4 stars more like 3 1/2. Great bar down the street "barchelata" get free wi-fi and great drinks for cheap prices.... Lots of hotel people here to party! Get 6 pack to go for only 90 pesos.... Very busy place at night and worth it! All in all, not a place for us to return, but if you do not smoke or drink, good place to go!

Room Tip: All good rooms!

The hotel is huge and when we checked in, it was dark. It seemed we walked forever before getting to our room, but in daylight it was easy to find your way around. The food was very predictable everyday, either bland or extra spicey. The beds in the all adult building where they put us, were like laying on a piece of wood. We found out a couple of days after that you can ask for sponges and they will put them on the beds. It helped some but they were still hard. The safes are $24.00 and they are small and very worn, but they worked for what we needed. There was no such thing as a washcloth to be had, so if you like washclothes to shower, take your own! No tissues either so take your own! There were plenty of lounge chairs for everyone and never had a problem finding one. The staff are friendly and help out when needed. Drinks were a plenty! The hotel is close to the village and is a nice walk into the village. The craft market is just across the little bridge and they are 'in your face' as soon as you cross the bridge, but a few of them backed off when they were told thanks but not interested, others followed and argued, I just kept walking. The entertainment at night was second to none, absolutley wonderful and worth seeing each and every night. I found that this hotel was huge and during the day the entertainment staff only talk to the people who are loud and in their face. Overall it was a good week there other than the few little things mentioned here. Oh ya, you can hop a bus and go into Puerto Vallarta, it is cheap and doesn't take long to get to town. I don't think I will go back to this hotel as it was just too big and nothing was personable....if you want to go somewhere and be lost in the crowd then it is a place to go.
