“Good - But could be so much better.”

Firstly the positives - What a great part of the country to visit. The site itself is in a great position, on the outskirts of the village of Slingsby with a short 25 min journey into York City Centre and the lovely seaside town of Scarborough just under an hours drive away.

The park is split into 2 areas. At the bottom of a kind of "bowl" are the static caravans. Up one side of this bowl is a gently sloping field with touring pitches at the bottom followed by three separated areas for tents. We stayed in the first of these areas as it had an electric hook up. The pitches were more than adequate for our large family tent with plenty of space for the car to be parked beside it. Trees are used to define each of the areas and the park was very well kept with grass neatly cut and our first impression was very positive.

At the top of the park was a small child's play area, with swings and climbing frame. Not huge but certainly enough to keep our two happy ! We only spoke to the staff on two occasions, once when we checked in and once to ask about local pubs for food. Both times they were very friendly and helpful and we couldn't fault them on the customer service.

The negatives - There weren't that many negative aspects but the ones that exist are quite big ones. The one toilet block for all the campers is located at the edge of the "bowl" on the lowest level of the site. From our position, it wasn't too bad a walk to get to, but if you were further up the field, this would be a considerable distance to go to the loo. The park wasn't very busy during our visit which was just as well as their are only two showers in each of the men's and ladies sections of the toilet block. I can't imagine what the queues would be like for these if the park was full to capacity.

The cleanliness of the toilet blocks was ok. I appreciate that they cannot be kept clean all the time but things like holes in the wall between toilet and shower cubicles are things that should be picked up by cleaning staff. The showers operate by push button and were warm at best. Not the worst I have used but nowhere near the best. It is here also that little things can make a big difference. How about a little shelf in the shower cubicle to place your wash bag on, rather than leaving it on the floor to get wet ? The doors to the toilets open to the inside but the shower doors open outwards meaning there is a gap that people can see through. It also meant that the first time we used it, my little 6 year old kept bumping against the door and it would only take a little knock for it to open.

There is only one washing up area located on the side of the toilet block, which again would mean a long walk with heavy dishes etc for campers further up the field. Again the little things here make a difference. Only 1 plug between 2 sinks and neither of the cold water taps worked very well, spraying water out rather than running into the sink.

The only other negative we encountered was the fact that the fresh drinking water supply backed onto the waste bins. I cannot myself see how this can be very hygienic, but perhaps that's just me being picky !! Not sure if it was normal but the bin men came round at 06.30 on the Tuesday morning which was a bit of a surprise, and by the time we left on Thursday they were overflowing.

We have stayed in a great number of sites over the years and this site was nowhere near the worst and wouldn't take very much to put it near the top. The biggest improvement that the site needs in our opinion is a new shower block on the camping field, but this is obviously a costly investment but one that would certainly improve its rating.

Despite the negatives I would certainly consider staying here again and as long as it was with an electric hook up I would recommend it to a friend.

Many thanks for taking the time to write such a comprehensive review of the park. We appreciate all the comments that you have made and will learn from them. However, we do feel an opportunity was missed to discuss them in person as you failed to mention any of the faults/recommendations whilst staying with us.

The walk from the very furthest point of the tent field to the toilet block is approximately 4 minutes. We give all guests the choice of where to pitch their tent (no electric)so it is up to each family to decide how far they want to be away from the facilities. We acknowledge the distance to be an issue for a small minority for our guests and it is something we will continue to monitor.

Thanks again for your review.

We thoroughly enjoyed our stay in our static caravan :) lovely quiet, clean site. Perfect for children and a great base for days out. We ended up going to Middleham and Barnard castle as well as visiting more local places Castle Howard, Yorkshire Lavender etc. Even on the wet days we just simply enjoyed relaxing in the caravan reading, watching movies etc and just made the most of being able to just chill out. Highly recommend this site and I'm hoping we will come back next yr as still lots of places to see and visit.

“Excellent stay!”
Reviewed May 19, 2014 for a stay in May 2014

We booked for 1 night which was great, not very many places allow this. From booking to leaving we couldnt fault a thing. The caravan was lovely, clean and in such a lovely area. We all had a brilliant day/night was such a shame we couldnt stay longer! We will be back in the summer!

“Comfortable Stay”
Reviewed May 8, 2014 for a stay in April 2014

Robin Hood Caravan Park is well situated within a short drive from Castle Howard and other places of historical interests. The caravan itself is spacious and comfortable. There was a gas central heating in the caravan. WIFI is a bonus for a fee of £20.00/week but very difficult to get easy access maybe due to the location but usable if you have a lot of patience. Duvets and pillows were provided but you need to bring your own sets of covers. For £5.00/set extra you can pre-order the bedding cover. Unfortunately the duvets and pillows were badly stained and quite smelly. This was reported to the reception and pillows were replaced. Fortunately, we brought with us our own sets including towels etc. as we knew this was a self-catering stay. Car parking is available but rather restricted.

Many thanks for sharing your thoughts.

Internet access in rural areas can be quite slow particularly if you are used to the superspeed broadband that towns/cities can provide. However, since your stay we have upgraded our internet access to fibre broadband so hope we will see some improvement in the speeds.

With regards car-parking, I'm sorry you feel it is only limited. With a hardstanding space at the front of each caravan and an area outside reception for additional cars we do feel that we meet the needs of all our guests.

We pride ourselves on listening to our guests, learning from their feedback and responding to problems immediately so I'm happy to hear that pillows/duvets were replaced as soon as you expressed your concerns to reception.

Thanks again.

“Lovely Park, lovely village”
Reviewed November 1, 2013 for a stay in October 2013

We stayed in early October 2013 in caravan 28. When we first walked in was very surprised as we thought we had the wrong caravan! Having stayed in Park Resorts bronze before (we have a dog) we were very pleased with what looked like an almost new caravan. Really quiet park with a little shop, park, and washing facilities for the campers/tourers. On the edge of the lovely village of Slingsby. Pub is a must, food is amazing and didn't feel like an outsider when we walked in. Great base for Malton, Pickering, the coast and beyond as well as Flamingo Land. As another reviewer stated maybe could do with some bedside lamps but a minor niggle. We will be back!

“Yorkshire at its best.”
Reviewed October 23, 2013 for a stay in October 2013

Stayed at this caravan park and used as a base to visit York and the ‘Pickering 40’s weekend’. The caravan we were allocated (no 9), appeared to be a fairly new caravan, we found it immaculately clean, the heating was easy to use, complimentary items were really useful. It would have been nice to have had bedside lights, but that was just a very minor inconvenience. The setting of the site is excellent, the whole site was really well maintained; the local bird life was a joy to watch.
We visited the local (The Grapes) in the village, a 5 minute walk, we found this served lovely food, together with local beer, always a bonus. Supporting the local pub was mentioned in the information brochure in the caravan, could I make a small suggestion that either directions or a small hand drawn map are included. We tried to find the pub in the dark and took a number of wrong turns before we finally found the pub, but well worth it.
We will be returning to this caravan site in the future.
