“Excellent location, good skiing, decent rooms.”
Reviewed February 5, 2012

Prime location in the resort; handy for gondola, ski school, equipment hire and places to eat and drink. Rooms were basic but functional enough, who spends much time in their room anyway?
Upon stepping off the bus make sure that you grab everybodys passport and charge straight up the ramp and into the reception before the rest of the coach gets wind of what youre doing. The check in process is pretty slow and disorganised. Not an issue if youre the first there though.
If your package allows, i would avoid berthod ski hire (under the gondola station). Staff were all pretty surly and reluctant to help. Equipment was also pretty dated (compared to other resorts i have visited).
Nothing to do with the hotel but days spent in nearby la rosiere (ski there) and courmayeur (free bus there) were a great change from the fairly limited runs of la thuile itself.
Overall a great holiday but i doubt i would return.

Title says it all. Most of the reviews on here seem fair to me. Been twice now and it's all about the skiing. If you want somewhere really close to the slopes (2 mins walk) that's warm and clean then it'll be Ok. If you want a quiet luxury stay the go somewhere else. Went with interski and their rep (Rich) was fantastic. Can be some fairly noisy college groups but it's harmless enough, sound proofing isn't good.
Bottom line: if you're going for the skiing and not the hotel experience it's fine! Must be - we're going back again in march.

Spent a week here in early January. La Thuile, nice small quaint place, very quiet with some nice little pizzerias and restaurants. Chocolate shop fantastic and a must visit. Great skiing in France and Italy, with the option to ski courmayer and pila on the one ski pass. Apartments basic but nice and clean, we were able to cook meals, without problems. Hotel complex was fine overall, only gripe we had was that the wifi access was only available in certain spots within the hotel......not in your room or apartment!!! There was a supermarket and butchers on the complex and some shops and bars. If you have a late arrival there is a vending machine that provides some basic supply's. There was also some water, tea and coffee in the apartment on arrival...small but nice touch. We had a superior room which was great. It had a double bedroom with on suite bathroom. Living area with sleeping for a further two people....although would suit kids better than adults! With a further shower room/toilet. Both shower and ensuit bathroom had complimentary smellie and hair dryers. The kitchen/diner area was adequate and we managed self catering with no problems. The balcony area we had was huge but could do with some furniture. Towels were supplied and rooms cleaned, beds changed and towels renewed mid week. We also had complimentary towelling bathrobes and slippers, again another nice touch.Ski hire and lift pass collection was hassle free..we travelled with Crystal and there service was first class other than the cattle market that is Turin airport on departure day.....but the reps sorted it in ,the end. Looking to book for next year. It's not luxury but it's a great place to stay and ski. We stayed in the monte bianco block which was great for access to the gondola and ski lifts and the beginers area...great for the kids to get their ski legs! Some things I would change:- wifi access in the rooms some more English speaking TV channels and some furniture for the balcony.

Just returned from a week stay at Planibel Apartments, we were on the 5th floor of the Monte Bianco block and didn't have any problem with noise. We booked through Crystal and the Superior room option came up cheaper on the website so obviously went for that! Definitely worth it, big apartment with separate double en-suite bedroom, bathrobes and complimentary smellies plus 2 hairdryers! I agree that a 2 ring hob and microwave was slightly limiting for self catering but we managed. The midweek clean was very welcome and no need to clean the apartment on departure either which was great. The skiing in La Thuile and La Rosiere was fantastic, probably suits the intermediate skiier best as there weren't a great deal of blues and greens to choose from. Don't be intimidated by the hideous looking Black run that greets you on arrival, there is an easier option down into the resort!
The Crystal reps couldn't have been better. There is a free bus to Courmeyeur and the lift pass covers this resort, it was worth a visit for the day but not as good skiing as La Thuile and the location of Plannibel couldn't be better. We wouldn't hesitate to go back again.

Room Tip: If you can afford the Superior option go for it - put a request in for floor 4 or 5 in case of noise...

We booked as a group to go to La Thuile. It is a brilliant resort - plenty of good skiing for the new or intermediate skier and never crowded.

1st moan - Because we wanted to be together in a group we booked the accommodation through Neilson 10 months in advance. However, on arrival we found we had been allocated rooms at opposite ends of the complex. Apparantly my husband and I had paid extra for superior accommodation and our apartment was therefore in the newly refurbished Monte Bianco block. The reception staff blamed the tour operator for this and said it was their error on booking.

Our superior apartment was more than adequate. In addition to the normal things we had dressing gowns and slippers supplied. The block was also just across the road from the ski lift and so the location was brilliant. However, our friends did not fair so well. The heating was poor in their two bedroom apartment on the top floor of the Gran San Bernardo block, two chairs were broken, there was no microwave and things were generally well worn and shabby.

The Monte Bianco block may be newly refurbished and in the best location but it is next door to the 'King Cafe'. This below ground pub played extremely loud music from approx 2300 hrs to 0200 hrs each night. Unfortunately our apartment (2126) was on the 2nd floor and above its door - which they insisted on leaving open which only intensified the noise. After the second night of being kept awake we were moved to another apartment - in the same block but on the other side of the building. From this apartment the music could still be heard but it was not very disturbing. (We spoke to a two other English couples in the block near our first apartment. They said that the music was not really disturbing them because they were going to bed early at around 2130 hours and so they were well asleep by the time it started).

My advice is if you are paying extra for a superior apartment you need to specify that it has to be on the front side of the Monte Bianco block and away from the King Cafe. Alternatively, don't pay the extra, go in a shabby non refurbished apartment and you will at least get an undisturbed nights sleep. As previously stated La Thuile is a great resort for skiing so if you can afford to stay somewhere better then I would do so. We also stayed at Planibel apartments last year and although the apartment then was adequate (and quiet as well away from the King Cafe) it wasn't a great standard overall.

Whilst staying at the Planibel apartments we did use the local shops in the complex. The butchers shop was brilliant, staff in the the 'Only Ski Sport shop' were really friendly and helpful and they had an excellent stock of ski wear and the small supermarket had a good range of items which made 'self catering' very easy.

Room Tip: Anywhere away from the King Cafe - suggest the Gran San Bernardo or Cervino blocks but they are not...

residence's rooms are not really renovated, but just cleaned more carefully than usual.
Kitchenette is simply ridiculous: 2 tans one for small fried pan and another for coffee
No tv in bedroom
But location is just splendid

skiing was great located right at the bottom of slopes.accomodation was at best depressing.2 rings and a fridge was your self catering equiptment.cleaned only once weekly, plenty of room.2 bathrooms which was a bonus.complex was like a nasty housing estate lots of italian teenagers hanging round drinking vodka outside lifts/bars/shop,no trouble from them but a bit intimidating.crystal reps best weve ever come accross all there tips really helped.wouldnt stop here again but would go to la thuile it was a great ski area, not too great for complete beginners but great for other abilities. if you get bthis holiday for approx £300 pp go for it if you pay the 2200 self catering for 3 of you like we did youve just been robbed!!

Room Tip: go to another hotel!
