We stayed at Carmel Cottage for two night and in between went on a fairly rugged-weather hike up the Tongariro Crossing. It was a great place to return to, with it's solid fuel heater and many armchairs and tables. The kitchen supplied everything we needed to self-cater, and the washing machine, dryer and drying rack were much appreciated as just about every item of clothing we had was saturated. It's tucked away location is still an easy walk from the supermarket and facilities of town. It was also very comfortably warm.
