“Hospitality personified”
Reviewed May 18, 2012

We spent two nights at this comfortable and clean B&B/home-stay and really enjoyed the hospitality and company of Shirley-Ann and Richard. They were forthcoming with good recommendations of things to do when the inclement weather meant that we could not walk the Tongariro Crossing. They organised a half-day trout fishing trip with an excellent local guide, and then not only proceeded to cook our catch for dinner, but also sent us on a complementary hot-springs dip in a nearby facility. We shared a lovely meal together (Shirley-Ann is a pretty good cook) and enjoyed stimulating conversation and a few laughs over a glass of wine.

One thing to note is that the feel of this place is more home stay than B&B as you share their living room, and pass through it to get to the upstairs rooms (Tongariro/Hinemaiaia). It's also a little way from town in a housing estate, which may be an issue if you don't have a car. This place also seems to cater for the more mature crowd, but saying that, my partner and I (in our late 20s) had a really enjoyable time, and would definitely stay here again.

We stayed two nights here and thoroughly enjoyed the very comfortable and spacious bedroom as well as the tranquil environment. The bedroom has a lovely view of the garden and further to Lake Taupo. The hosts, Richard and Shirley-Ann, were very friendly and kind and a lovely breakfast is served in their dining room with a wide selection including a cooked breakfast made to order! Like other reviewers, the homemade cake and fresh flowers in the in the bedroom were very much appreciated too. They even have a Nespresso coffee machine which delighted my husband (the only one we came across in NZ!). All the attractions of the region are within easy reach and you will definitely leave with a smile on your face after a stay here.

We stayed only one night here but thoroughly enjoyed the evening with our sociable and interesting hosts Shirley- Ann and Richard. A special welcome and very nice touch was flying the flags of their guests' home countries. Breakfast was wonderful.
As pointed out by other reviewers, the location is handy for the Tongariro Alpine Crossing (which we didn't do!). There is plenty of opportunity for easier shorter walks in the vicinity, too.

We enjoyed staying with Richard and Shirley very much. Thay gave us the feeling that we were very welcome and that they enjoyed looking after us. The room was comfortable and spacious and had a beautiful view. The breakfast and the daily cakes were yummy. The location is quiet, but within driving distance of different eateries. We would highly recommend this B&B, which could serve nicely as a base for visiting Lake Taupo, Rotorua, Waitomo and for walking the Tongariro Crossing.

Can only recommend this place. Hosts are very nice and extremely helpful. Good breakfast. Cozy and very clean rooms with excellent views over the lake. Very quiet location, close enough to Tongariro NP.

Richard and Shirley-Ann were exxxtremely nice and helpful.
We were received like friends and celebrated Xmas with them. Richard fixed my wife's broken hiking shoe - it worked for the remaining three weeks stay in New Zealand - and Shirley-Ann cooked, baked and even did the washing for our son (and refused to be paid for the extra service). Food, drinks and companionship were great. I learnt a bit about Cricket - although I still don't understand the rules - and will always remember them as the nicest of all the wonderful places we have been during our four weeks of travelling.

Definitely the best staying of our holiday.
The house has been lately renewed - everything is brand new.
A cosy, bright, ample, extraordinary clean suite, with even a room for the baggages and
with a view over the lake. The bathroom is wide with a powerful shower.
We were pampered by Shirley-Ann with delicious cakes, she used to 'forget' every day on the small table of our room.
Richard showed us all the best fishing spots on the rivers nearby and arranged the bookings for the Tongariro crossing.
Shirley-Ann is a very good cook even for our (italian) standards and we won't forget those evening meals, savouring Shirly-Ann titbits, sipping a good kiwi red wine and talking with them and the other guests.
Shirley-Ann and Richard, beside being very nice and friendly people,
beside making you at ease and treating you as one of the family,
they are very proficient in their job and even willing to improve.
It has been painful to say them good-bye after only 3 days of our staying.
