“Interesting place to visit”
Reviewed July 9, 2012

We aren't really fish people but visited the Trout Center on a rest day from the mountain and really enjoyed it. It didn't cost anything to wander around the grounds and they were pleasant and informative. A children's fishing competition was taking place and they seemed to be having fun.

“One of the nicer fisheries we've visited, an excellent attraction in the Turangi area”
Reviewed May 13, 2012

This was the best of three museum visits we made in this area of North Island, which included visits to the Rotorua and Taupo Museums. The entry price isn't cheap at NZ$10 per adult (children free) but we were very pleased with the facilities, trout hatchery and viewing areas and pretty much everything we found at the Tongariro National Trout Centre.

First, we were happy with the museum and exhibition areas just past the entrance area. What you find here is similar to some of what is on display at the Taupo Museum, lots of old-time fly rods and reels, flies, displays and information about fly fishing in the Tongariro River (as well as Lake Taupo). There was even an indoor play area for children, who are usually less interested in such things.

After the good museum experience, you then visit a series of trout hatchery and viewing spots, highlighted by a submerged area with a glass window showing trout swimming around in a small stream. Not sure if these trout can come and go as they please but it was very nice observing them (and feeding them as well).

There was a lovely walk area along the river, a pool full of smaller trout for the children to feed and traditional hatchery cells and tanks for you to see fry, baby trout and larger, probably spawning adults.

Also, the Center is run by volunteers which seems quite noble and worthy of support. Bathrooms were clean and well maintained and there was a small gift section within the main entrance, where you buy your tickets.

Overall, this was not only interesting but entertaining as well. Having visited a few fish hatcheries around the world, this is probably our favorite due to the accompanying museum, the submerged viewing platform (a real gem) and the amount and size of the monster trout available for viewing in the river within this Trout Centre.

We also preferred the Museum displays here to those of the Taupo Museum and found the overall experience better than both the Rotorua and Taupo Museums, overall. So, if you were only going to pick one museum to visit, this would be the one to see. We will definitely pay visit to the Tongariro National Trout Centre during future trips to this area, it was money well spent.

Hint: Trout feed is NZ$2 per bag. This usually seems like a child's activity but when you have 3-4 kg trout roaming the streams and feeding aggressively, its worth buying a bag or two! We sure enjoyed it!

“Definitely worth a visit”
Reviewed May 10, 2012

The trout centre has undergone an upgrade over recent years with a new visitors centre having been built. All the fish in the streams are free to come and go as they wish but choose to stay. Of particular interest are the trout in the childrens pool. These trout are so used to being fed that they will follow you as you walk around the perimeter.

“You will enjoy it!”
Reviewed April 26, 2012

Fun for both fish lover and non fish lover. If you like fishing, you will enjoy this place, if not, you will still have a chance to feed the fish and see how they hunger for food.

A lot of fishing rod types in display, growing baby trouts, and for activity, you will have a chance to feed trouts.

All the kids loved looking at the fish and running around. Just a nice big park relly with some fish in it. Not too crowded either
