“Comfortable and good location”
Reviewed January 5, 2013

The Settlers Motor inn was a great location for our plan to visit Mount Reupehu. It was an easy walk to the town centre and also to the nearby river. In the evenings we walked by the Tongariro River and watched the trout fishermen casting at the pools along the river. There is a suspension footbridge across the river where we stopped to enjoy the scenery. The owners were very helpful.

Past busyTaupo and down the eastern side of the lake to the bottom is Turangi. 3 motels clearly available and we chose this one. Comfortable wooden chalet which probably is more appealing to those of us coming from Europe. Friendly owners and all facilities you need for self catering etc. Ideal base for those wanting to fish - there's a fish cleaning room, and well sited for spending time in the Tongariro National park with its walking tracks. If you drive out to the west around the lake a mile or so past the route 47 turning there is a "hot pool" area with free parking and a free trail through hot water and gurgling mud pools. At the end by the picnic area if you look around there is are surface pools that are clearly used for cooking.
Not much in Turangi - couple of restaurants. Main centre seems to be the Bridge motel which is the local pub/ restaurant; so a bit busier and noisier. Glad we didn't stay there and probably best avoided Friday/Saturdays or in the holiday season if you prefer a quiet time!

Room Tip: Try for a chalet on the right hand side as you drive in. Opposite side, although quite well set bac...

I visited Turangi en route to Tongoriro and was very impressed with how helpful and kind the owners of the Settlers Motel were. They offered lots of information about the walk and the weather and even dropped me at the bus stop in the morning. My room was clean and cosy and well equipped.

We stayed for four nights as a base for exploring the Tongariro and Taupo areas. The room was excellent and had everything we needed to self cater. The room was serviced every day with clean towels etc. Both areas were within easy reach and the walk out the door by the river was a bonus. It is close to the main road but that gets little traffic (typical New Zealand) and did not bother us at all.

My wife and I, and a fellow motorcyclist - Harly Davidsons - none the less!! stayed at Settlers Motel on way from Wellington to Tauranga. A great spot and well located. The rooms were excellent as was the welcome from the propietors on our arrival at 9pm in the evening. Would not hesitate in recommending these for a stopover or a longer stay. Comfortable and clean just the deal and at a good and realsitic room tariff.

I stayed at Settlers for 4 nights on a road trip from North to South. First and foremost the owners Wayne and Helen were superb - very friendly and welcoming, helped me understand the local park and potential walks, kept an eye on the local weather and helped me arrange a trip to make the Tongariro Alpine Crossing when the weather broke, one of the highlights of my trip to NZ (note - even if the full alpine hike is not doable there are lots of other walks to do in the park, to the huts at each end of the crossing, or Tama lakes - and Turangi is a quick half hour drive into the park).

The motel room was actually a big chalet style apartment with kitchenette and shower, very clean, high ceiling, and private deck (facing the road, but set back over large grass area); and guest laundry to cold-wash and dry dirty hiking clothes (very much needed after sulphury hikes along the thermal explorer highway!). Parklands over the street has a bar and restaurant in walking range for a post-hike wind-down and friendly banter.

Overall this was a fantastic base to explore the area, great hosts, and would definitely stay here again.

Wayne and Helen greeted us and showed us to our room which already had the heater on. The rooms are clean and fresh with new beds, flat screen TVs and Sky TV. Warm and comfortable and good value. Plenty of room to spread out your gear if preparing to hit the manyfine hikes in this beautiful part of NZ
