We stayed here to fish and the guide and the fishing were excellent. Otherwise it was not great. Chalets are OK, no more, service enthusiastic but sometimes slow and the location was not as good as we expected from the website. We stayed 3 nights - the food was good for the steak and the lamb but otherwise ordinary, and the menu did not change so be prepared to have simialr meals each night!

Thank you for your comments regarding your recent stay at our Lodge. Yes we are experiencing outstanding fishing conditions on the Tongariro at present - long may that continue.
Just to clarify one point however - every evening, we prepare a 'specials' menu in the dining room. This is designed for guests - like yourself, who stay multiple nights, and allows for variation in the menu during your stay.

Came here and found it was perfect for a relaxing wind down in beautiful surroundings. We went out for a day and they prepared a lunch pack for us. We had one dinner in the lodge and one in our room. Both were superb and served by really friendly people. Certainly planning to come back here again!

We stayed three nights at the lodge in early Feb to celebrate our 30th wedding anniversary. The price for the lodge is quite expensive--about $1500 for a couple including guided fishing, breakfast and dinner ( wine and coffee are not included). Note that even if you are a non-fishing person such as myself, the fishing guide price still applies. The chalet we stayed is simply furnished and there is almost no sound insulation; you can hear the conversations of your next door neighbors. There is no air conditioning so it became quite hot in the afternoon, but it cooled off at night.
The dinner is fabulous! absolutely delicious. and services are good. Overall, it was a good experience, quite expensive but an unique experience.

Room Tip: Sound insulation is poor, so try to get the chalet at the end of the row that you may avoid noises a...

Thank you so much for your feedback and for staying with us here at our beautiful Lodge. Just to clarify one point.- we don't charge, and have never charged for non-fishing guests. Our guiding costs are based on up to a maximum of 2 fishermen per guide - standard everywhere in New Zealand. If a couple stay at the Lodge but only one fishes - then that is the same cost as if they both fish.
I take on board your feedback re noise between the rooms. Most often this is not a problem and I do apologise that the people in the room next to you were obviously noisier than normal.
Thank you for your comments regarding the food. We have an outstanding Chef in Richard Atkinson and I never get tired of hearing all of the positive feedback we receive on him on a regular basis.

We arrived at the lodge in the mid afternoon only to find that the three bedroom house we had booked was sweltering hot and had not really been prepared properly for our arrival ( windows were all shut tight as a drum etc). We have to admit that the food was wonderful and service was good if a bit slow. Our washer machine leaked water and some screens were broken thus lots of Mosquitos inside...we didn't think we had booked a camping tent? None of these were attended to during our two night stay. We had booked fishing guides for the next morning and there was quite a lot of confusion including the staff unable to prepare breakfast in a timely manner and the guide "forgetting" a second reel so we had only one set up for two people ...totally bush league ...yikes!
This is a lovely location with super food but we definitely will not stay here again or recommend this place to others.

It was of course disappointing to read your review, particularly after the conversation I had with you prior to checking out, had left me with a completely different impression, Sadly however, your comments in our visitors book are at odds with this review.
I do accept the issue with the fishing guide forgetting the second reel and have already moved to address this, as I told you I would. The washing machine issue is also disappointing - as you know we had a technician look at it and found no fault and by your own admission, said you used it several times and it was working fine.
We are very proud of our Lodge and I am saddened that you felt it necessary to write such a review when you indicated to me that you had a wonderful stay with the exception of the fishing reel.
I hope you enjoy the rest of your stay in our beautiful country and that your return home is a safe one.

My husband and I LOVED the lodge while we were there. Our only regret was that we didn't stay nearly long enough, in retrospect.

Upon arrival, we were told that our bungalow had been accidentally over-booked, and so Graeme upgraded us nicely into a suite (not a bad problem to have!). The suite had a private deck overlooking a bit of the river. We spent the entire night photographing the night sky, watching shooting stars and sipping some good wine. Heaven.

We also spent an entire day with Ken Drummond learning how to fly fish. He was AMAZING. He took us to a private farm with a gorgeous, wide river.... we felt as if we were in the middle of nowhere. It was just us, Ken, some sheep and four rainbow trout :). You must ask for him as a guide while you were there. He had us fly fishing in no-time.

The food at the lodge is delicious - both at breakfast and dinner.

We will certainly be coming back (perhaps next year), and will be staying for at least two or three days next time. Thank you, Tongariro Lodge staff, for making our trip so memorable!

Thank you so much for posting this review. Given it is a busy time for us - it is always nice to be able to upgrade people and I am glad this added to your experience here at the Lodge.
Kenny is certainly a character and I am glad that you enjoyed your experience with him.
We are of course very excited about welcoming you back and perhaps we could arrange for that upgrade again :-)
Have a wonderful year ahead and thank you again for staying with us.

We stayed at Tongariro Lodge for the new-year's eve, we relaxed in the SPA after hours of walking on the Tongariro crossing, enjoyed a romantic walk along the river with stunning sunset, had a beautiful dinner at the restaurant and warm welcome by the staff, finished by a fire in the fireplace in our cosy Chalet with a glass of wine, what a lovely way to finish 2012. We will come back with friends and learn to fish ;)

Thank you so much for sharing this. It is a story we never get tired of reading. We are very proud of our Lodge and are so glad you found peace and tranquility whilst staying here. I would certainly encourage you to try the fishing next time you are here. A day on the beautiful Tongariro River is perhaps the most relaxing way to spend a day.
We look forward to welcoming you back again soon.

We can't honestly thank Graeme, Kim & their team enough for providing us with a perfect romantic getaway from our own tourism/hospitality business. The only problem was our stay was not long enough. From the 2nd we arrived at Tongariro Lodge until our departure we were made to feel so welcome and comfortable. The premise, location and service are 2nd to none and we would highly recommend that people stay here for an absolute minimum of 2 nights and take full advantage of the onsite restaurant. The lamb, the eggs bene and my new favourite tipple - Malibu & Feijoa were just heavenly. We will certainly be returning in the near future. Kind regards from J & S at Sail Barbary

Kim and I are so glad that you enjoyed your stay Sarah. It was of course our pleasure to welcome you to our beautiful Lodge.
Your comments mean so much more - given the success of your own operation and knowing tthat you certainly know the difference between good and bad. You and Jamie are most welcome anytime.
