“Friendy and welcoming”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed December 9, 2008

A warm welcome from the owners, set the tone for the rest of our visit. Our room was spacious, clean and had obviously been freshly decorated. The large balcony with a hot tub was an extra. The view was spoiled by the work going on to construct a marina, but once that is completed it will give an extra dimension to Breakers. The quirky statues etc set it apart from the chains. It was cold the day we arrived so the heating had been put on to make sure that we were comfortable. The owner took time to tell us about Whangamata, places to eat and what to see. It was a short walk into town and an even shorter one to the supermarket. We eat at Rossini's and Coast whilst there, but there were places to suit all budgets. The jazz festival added to the enjoyment at both restaurants. Breakfast was brought to our room - huge portions to set you up for the day and well cooked. There may not be big attractions at Whangamata, but with a beach like it has who needs them. If visiting New Zealand again I would not hesitate to stay at Breakers again

Breakers was our overnight stay at the start of an 18 day coach tour of the North & South Island with Kirra Tours. We were all pretty tired on arrival and pulled up to the motel, which looks pleasant from the drive, but we had a great surprise with our room (No.15 on the ground floor). We had a huge bathroom, with whirlpool bath and shower, a hot tub on the patio and direct access to the pool beyond the patio. Our room was spacious, clean and well equipped and would be great if you were driving your own vehicle as there are cooking facilities in a clean, well equipped kitchen. At the time of staying there was no bar, but our tour's evening meal was at the local RSL club, a short distance away. The food here was great, HUGE portions and plenty of choice. Our breakfast was a short walk across a field to a local cafe, which we mumbled about on arrival, but was great fun being up early the next morning and being out in the sun. There is a good supermarket nearby for travel essentials, food etc.
The family of owners at Breakers are extremely friendly and made us all really welcome. Would definately return if in the area again.

We stayed at Breakers back in April of 2003 and really enjoyed it. The quiet surroundings, comfortable accomodations (especially the private hot tub on our balcony) and warm welcome were highlights. The location is a bit outside of the main town area and beach but it's any easy walk or very short ride in the car. The accomodations were clean and well kept and the personalized service offered by the owners was much appreciated. We are planning to return to Whangamata in March 07 and will stay at Breakers again.

The motel itself is good - nice sized room, clean, with a spa pool on the deck - and a beautifully landscaped swimming pool below. There's no wireless/BB net access in the rooms, but there is a shared and free PC in reception which is on BB.

My only issue really is the town itself, which is pretty small, and choices for eating out are quite limited unless you are into pizza and fast food. There are two main places that are recommended - Gaga's and Oceanas. We visited the latter and it was OK, but for a place specialising in seafood, the salmon was either frozen or served beyond its date.

The beach is long and undeveloped - surfers will love it.

This is a very attractive motel, spacious, comfortable and spotless, with well-equipped kitchenette and own deck pool. Within easy reach of town and beach. Great.

My wife and I stayed here for three nights in January 2005. Located about a mile outside of Whangamata. A fairly standard motel, the room was a reasonable size, clean and well equipped with a kitchen and dining area but we found the décor a little dated. A good sized BBQ area was available and was a good place to meet other guests. The pool area was attractive as was our own outdoor seating area with sun loungers. Look out for the quirky features, obviously built with a sense of humour.
We had originally booked a room with an outdoor spa bath but our travel agent didn’t pass this request onto the motel and on arrival we were disappointed not to have this facility, however when we realised that the spa baths, particularly on the ground floor, offered no real privacy, we were less concerned.
On a long surfing beach, the uninspiring town of Whangamata itself has little to offer the discerning traveller apart from a fairly reasonable supermarket and a base to explore the coast. Nero’s is the place for an excellent pizza, but be prepared for a very long wait indeed if they’re busy. There were no other restaurants that tempted us to eat out in the town. Although we visited in the height of Summer, the town had a quiet, out of season feel with bars and restaurants not open.

The motel is situated on the Coromandel Peninsula on New Zealand's north island. The apartment was well fitted out and had its own private spa pool on the terrace outside. The icing on the cake was the genuine warm welcome from the owner. The property is situated about a five minute walk from Whangamata town centre.
