Bushland Park Lodge & Retreat
Reviewed February 1, 2010

It was a warm wellcome ,a superbe surrounding and best food we had in whole NZ. The rooms are big and the hosts look for everything you need. It´s a real escape from hectic and sitting in the lovely garden is just fantastic. There are great bushwalks around and it´s a perfect spot to drive arround the Coromandel. When you retourn there is a great dinner waiting for you and don´t forget about the personel breakfast. So when someone wants privacy and good food and an outdoor spa it´s the best place in the world.

If you love the relaxing feeling of seclusion in the bush only minutes from the beach then this is the place for you.
My lovely partner with as I understand alot of help from Petra organized a surprise getaway for me, understanding my love of tranquillity, good food & luxury he chose the perfect place. We stayed in the presidential suite, it had everything we needed & more, the gas fireplace was a nice touch & is quite romantic at night it is very much a home away from home. The outlook across the garden & lawn to the lily pond & bush beyond is tranquillity at it best & the resident ducks are comical. The food was absolutely perfect & our first private dinner was just amazing with the fire & soft music adding the finishing touches. The glow worms are romantic & the perfect place to get a yes to your proposal as my lovely man found out, Petra was in on the "secret" & was a great help to him. Its the little things that make this place so great, the fact that nothing seems to much of an ask for Petra & Reinhard, they even packed a picnic lunch for us to take on the waterfall walk. I could go on forever about what was great but really the best thing would be to see it all for yourself. There was nothing I didn’t like!!!

We booked this, knowing that the location was not great for us, but the reviews and the marketing made it sound impossible to miss. However, out of all the places we stayed on our tour, this is the only one we felt was overpriced - and we were in the cheapest rooms. As it was in a remote location we did eat there. They hype on the restaurant made it sound fantastic. I cannot fault hte quality and skill of each bit that was cooked, but the mixture of all the different flavours on the main course was too much and they fought with each other. The starters and desserts were superb. Simplify the main courses, Reinhard and let the flavour of the meats flow through and it would be excellent. The restaurant needed a real good dust and cobwebs cleared. I do feel it is too big for the 2 of them. We were in the cheapest room as that is all we could afford, but the coment in their book about there being 2 cheaper rooms for those that wont pay, did not endear the placce to us. Unfortunately we missed the gloworm caves as we were too tired, but that is a nice touch for them to offer. I am sure the park is a lovely place to relax in the Summer - but be prepared to pay over the top for your meals.

We are operating our Boutique accommodation with fine dining since 15 years in a remote nature spot where we offer our dinners with fresh home-grown organic produce and with the best supplied “Export Quality Meats”. All meals are individually cooked to our guest wishes and dietary needs. Such 3 course candlelight dinners in an exclusive and tranquilly atmosphere is not overpriced and will hardly be found in the UK for under 40pounds. To this particular evening another guest from Scotland even invited the chef with expensive Single Malt Whiskeys rewarding his dinner pleasure in a 3 night stay inclusive dinners. We are sorry that we didn’t meet the taste of this particular UK guest, but we think it is not fair and justified to judge an entire place only about a subjective opinion in taste of food.

My husband and I went to Bushland Park Lodge to have a two day birthday celebration. From the emails beforehand, to the welcoming, meals, room, ambience, extras, everything was absolutely perfect. Petra is a wonderful hostess and Reinhard is a fabulous chef, plus for us happily sharing his recipes! We brought home wonderful memories, including a late night walk to see their glowworms in the grotto, and a beautiful piece of Petra's glass - a wonderful fluted bowl. Staying 2 plus days would be a highlight of anyone's visit to New Zealand, and for Kiwi's an exceptional pleasure of being home.

Our hosts Reinhard & Petra made us feel welcomed- the Presidential Suite was well presented with all the conveiniences you couls ever want with privacy if needed. A very quiet locationjust to get away for a romantic interlude with your loved on, with food, drinks and the ambience equal to any other - only regret is that the time spent there was not nearly long enough

We stayed for two nights at this peaceful getaway and enjoyed our time here. The gentle atmosphere and the superb service were parts of our stay that we will remember. There were prts that we enyed also including the fantastic original cuisine that is like nothing else we have ever experienced but thouroughly enjoyed, the glow worms at night and fresh water crayfish.
Hosts Rheinhard and Petra are artists in the true sense of the word. From their fantastic interior decor designed completely by themselves (the rooms are to die for) to their passion for glass creations and the original art work that comes from these designs.
The lodge grounds are suitable for almost any function and we only wish we had not already paid for our wedding venue.
