“Realised we chose the wrong hotel/location when shown to our room.”
Reviewed May 31, 2010

My review will be biased a bit because we like the big city life coming from a hick town in the backwaters! So we didn't like the secluded bush setting or the quietness of Pauanui or the surrounding towns. Our room was nice & was clean but it was chalet 4 which from the carpark is a very steep climb so be aware of that if you have mobility problems. Even if they drive you up you still have to walk up steep steps to get to your room. It's really inconvenient if you leave something in the car.
They will instantly drive you to your steps if you request it though. Although when we went to leave I must have rung the restaurant & asked to be picked up for check out & they said sure so we waited, & waited, & waited. When I went down to reception they hadn't known about my call as the restaurant hadn't said anything to the concierge.
Good size fridge & cupboards & really good size bathroom which is clean & bright & airy. Lovely balcony although no view as really enclosed by trees.
We moved the armchair by the bed for watching TV as you can't see the TV because it's in a cupboard.
No complimentary newspaper delivered. No free Internet. Room was serviced everyday to a high standard.
Everything else was more miss than hit as well.
We are part of the Accor club so got these nights for a really good price, & I could be wrong but I felt like "cheap deal = most inconvenient room location".
We had an early booking for dinner & ordered an entree & they came back & said was already sold out!
Ask how the dishes are prepared before you order. We were disappointed by most of our meal because how we read the menu & what was on the plates seemed very different. In fact, for the 1st time ever I sent a dish back as it was the last straw of a mediocre experience. The irritating piped music didnt help.
Breakfast was also disappointing. Very basic continental & you had to pay extra to get an a- la- carte menu plate of food & extra again to get a hash brown, mushrooms (2) etc.
It was hard to decide because the menu was so limited in options.
Those were the only 2 meals we had at the hotel. We checked out early on our last day so we could be in Rotorua in time to have full American Breakfast at the Novotel there!
The Spa pool seemed tiny. They should have 2 or 3 of them.
Not our cup of tea as I said, we have decided we prefer Novotels generally.

I stayed here in March 2010. The location is beautiful and the chalets are more than adequate.

The food is the restaurant was OK - I found my choices as a vegetarian very limited. Breakfast was good though - with a wide variety of choices.

The lighting to some of the chalets could be better as myself and one other from my group got lost one night!

We were able to stay in this fine resort through an exchange of our time share in the US.
It far exceeded our expectations and our chalet was very spacious and well appointed with a full kitchen and two baths. Each chalet is very private and well placed in the natural mountainside landscape. Also the restaurant was excellent!
Also visit Tairua across the bay for more typical shopping and restaurants and a great hike to the top of the mountain with absolutely spectacular views!

As accor advantage plus members we travel a lot and use a number of this groups hotels .
We stayed here with friends who are also accor members in the royal suite which is the 3 bedroom villa, which on first impressions is rather nice although the bathrooms could be better..
On our first night we encountered another visitor in our room and lets just say this was off the four legged furry type which ended up on my bed at 11pm that night,I dont know who got more of a fright me or the rat judging by the rat poo all over the bedroom floor.
We called reception to no avail so myself and my husband spent the night on a sofa each and our little friend in the guest suite.
We called staff the next morning to be told we would have to wait 20 mins and they would send someone out.Sure enough a guy came out put 2 traps down in the bedroom with peanut butter on and left. The stench was absolutely terrible in the room no sign of room service and no sign of a hotel manager to inform us of what was going to happen with our rooms as we were booked in for the next 3 nights?????????
Finally we were told if they couldnt catch it they would move us into 2 rooms as they didnt have anything else to move us into and that normally they dont service the apartments unless you stay in them for 8 days or more??I went into reception and told the girl on the desk that the room would be serviced and cleaned and that in fact they could service the whole house. We came back later to find they had done so but they had never bothered to move the beds and of course there was rat poo everywhere underneath.
Its absolutely shocking that guests have to go to such great lengths to try and get service and matters resolved when something goes wrong.
The last night we had the same problem again although this time it was in the kitchen.
The response we got was "oh thanks for telling us".
We were told that this villa was booked out over the next fortnight i hope the new guests havent got the same problem.
I wouldnt deal with this situation in the same way again,it would be a call straight to enviromental health instead.
Restaurant over priced although we had a good meal, dont order room service the food was terrible.
The pool and gym were average, not a spa resort.

We stayed for three nights in room 42, designated a Bush Chalet. We changed our room from the original one allotted to us, because, being on the right hand side of a double, its room length side windows were next to the walkway and not so private. No 42 was on the left hand side and therefore totally private. The staff were happy to change this for us, but I would advise others to perhaps be aware of the difference in the privacy.
The setting was stunning and we awoke every morning to the sound of the birds.
Annoying piped music in the restaurant, but it wasn't as intrusive as some we've been in.

We stayed here over New Year. The hotel is obviously run by students during their holidays as the service is appalling.
Cleanliness needs addressing as there were cockroaches in the laundry room which had not been cleaned for weeks.
This hotel needs to get its act together; it is very expensive and not value for money.
This is our second stay at a Mercure hotel; both have been disappointing.
