“This resort has pros and cons, but the cons probably win”
3 of 5 bubbles Reviewed April 12, 2013 via mobile

I like the resort itself. The log cabins in the trees are a bit tired but remind me of some great vacations in Colorado and Virginia. The hills are a steep walk and the trees, now well established, block the view to the sea. Despite this, the resort offers something different to the usual concrete clone resort. That said, here comes the cons. Puaunui Beach is remote, with limited dining options (there's a good takeaway and a cafe). The resort has a restaurant with possibly the rudest maitre'd outside Paris. This is actually what happened: we walked in (2 of us) at about 6.15. The place was empty. "Have you got a reservation?" Did we need one? He looked at his sheet for about a minute; there were 3 names on it, there are about 30 empty tables. "Come this way" We followed. "Is this table alright?" Offering us a cramped table at the back of the empty room. No, we'll have this one by the window, looking over the sea thanks. After that, we were left with the menu. My wife is dairy intolerant, but everything from the grill was not dairy free(!) because they only offered potato dauphinois as a side. A little negotiation substituted roast potatoes from another dish, at a cost of deep sighs and disdain from maitre'd. After that, the service was handed over to a junior waiter who was excellent, and the food was good. By the time we left, there were two other parties there, a family and a couple. The couple had the table we had refused, so presumably they had failed to book too. My advice, stay somewhere with more dining options, but if you are a fan of Fawlty Towers, have a meal here and enjoy the closest thing to a Basil Fawlty impersonator you will experience.

Puka Park lodge is priced at NZD $280 night for a double room. The setting was lovely nestled in amoungst the native bush in Paunui and was deserved of the price. The room itself was not fit for animals. On entry to the room there was an over powering smell of urine. When notifying the receptionist we were told that the hotel was fully booked so no other options available. On the wall next to the bed there were two large holes where something had been screwed to the wall and then been removed or had fallen out. The holes however had been left there and were very unsightly.

The large bed was great to look at but the bedding was substandard. There was no duvet cover but rather a loose sheet had been folded over to appear as though it were a duvet cover. This soon fell off the bed all together.

Overall I was very disappointed with the room and my stay. At $280 a night you should expect a certain level of sophistication or at the very least a clean room. I would have rather spent my money on a camp site down the road.

The Puka Park Resort is tucked away in bush on a hillside that is pretty steep. The rooms and chalets are nice enough however it is a bit of a rabbits warren and finding your accommodation can be daunting. Having said that the friendly staff do have a golf cart to convey the weary. They have a very nice pool and gym. The breakfast buffet was great. The dinner menu has good options but expensive. There is a pub & restaurant in the village. Suggest you go to the supermarket for snacks to bring with you as there is only a small shopping centre in Pauanui and the hours are limlted. If you like bush and walking you will love this Resort.

Nestled up amongst the trees a great location to enjoy what the Corromandel peninsula has to offer, beautiful weather, great beaches, fabulous walks, easy access to explore the logging and goldfield history and to witness the regeneration of the NZ bush. The staff were friendly attentive and informative. Free WiFi would be a big plus and an electric BBQ with BBQ food packs to cook up on the the balcony amongst the birds would be a winner.

The room was fairly standard what we would expect for the price, except for the miniscule skinny single beds. The sofa had more room on it.

The staff at reception and lady that drove us to our room in the golfcart was super friendly and attentive.

However, make your way up the stairs and it's another word completely. I have never experienced such a poor restaurant in all my life and it soured the whole experience for us. On the first night, our dinner was a disaster. A two hour wallet busting 'experience' that would put fawlty towers in a good light, time after time things were brought to the table that we hadn't asked for and then we wait and we wait and we wait. The place only had diners at five tables, how could they get it so wrong? It's difficult to laugh and turn a blind eye when their prices are up there with the top Auckland restaurants. We decided to forego a dessert as we couldn't bear to wait any longer.

Breakfast wasn't any better, I asked for eggs over-easy and the ones I received were cremated and burnt to a crisp on both sides. I asked them to restock the empty bread basket for toast, the guy brought two slices. We ate out for the rest of our stay.

Also most oddly for a location in the bush clad hills, that there seemed to be no bird-life at all . I reckon they must also have gone elsewhere to feed.

Great service and location. Superb food although prices to match.
Thought there should be free wifi if not in the rooms then in the common areas(likely would increase takings at the bar for drinks and coffee too)

Well appointed chalet in the forest of Mt Pauanui. We loved that our chalet was surrounded by forest, so it was very private and felt like we had escaped from the hustle and bustle of city life. We had a self contained chalet so didn't use the restaurant. Prices in the restaurant were a little expensive for us anyway. There was a fantastic view from the restaurant or if you wanted to have an afternoon drink watching the sunset, that was the spot. It was lovely to wake up to birds sitting on the balcony, saying 'good morning' whilst having our breakfast. The only downside was that the carpark is away from the chalet and the walk is quite steep.

Room Tip: Choose accommodation close to reception/carpark otherwise the afternoon walk from the carpark to you...
