I have often driven past the turnoff to the Katikati Bird Gardens and said to my husband “Must go there one day!” We finally did get there last month while in Tauranga over Easter. These beautifully landscaped gardens cover around 10 acres and have a mix of formal and informal plots, ponds, fountains and artworks. About 50 species of birds live here. Many roam free among the trees and gardens, and others are housed in large aviaries throughout the property. Bird species include many New Zealand natives such as keas, teal and kereru. The weather was great the day we visited and we had a lovely stroll around the gardens, and then enjoyed afternoon tea at the terrace café – it has yummy food. There are also picnic and BBQ facilities and a gift shop selling bird and garden themed gifts. The walk took us about 45 minutes. It’s an easy walk but there is a golf cart available for visitors with limited mobility. So if you’re driving along the main road to or from Tauranga and see the sign to the Katikati Bird Gardens, take the turnoff and enjoy this delightful spot.
