Owner description: A beautiful and extensive park on the edge of the inner Tauranga harbour; the bird gardens feature a range of both native and exotic birds. Set in delightful gardens of mature trees, lily ponds and wetlands. Gift shop. Cafe. Golf car hire. A great family day out and place to unwind.

I have often driven past the turnoff to the Katikati Bird Gardens and said to my husband “Must go there one day!” We finally did get there last month while in Tauranga over Easter. These beautifully landscaped gardens cover around 10 acres and have a mix of formal and informal plots, ponds, fountains and artworks. About 50 species of birds live here. Many roam free among the trees and gardens, and others are housed in large aviaries throughout the property. Bird species include many New Zealand natives such as keas, teal and kereru. The weather was great the day we visited and we had a lovely stroll around the gardens, and then enjoyed afternoon tea at the terrace café – it has yummy food. There are also picnic and BBQ facilities and a gift shop selling bird and garden themed gifts. The walk took us about 45 minutes. It’s an easy walk but there is a golf cart available for visitors with limited mobility. So if you’re driving along the main road to or from Tauranga and see the sign to the Katikati Bird Gardens, take the turnoff and enjoy this delightful spot.

On a visit to NZ in February, we stayed here for 5 days. It was great, so peaceful, beautiful gardens, and we loved the birds. The cottage was well equipped, wifi worked great, and the bed was really comfortable. Breakfast on the little outside deck was delightful, with ducks and peacocks for company. The gardens were great, and we didn't see a single member of the general public as we were out most of the day. The public are admitted from 10 to 4, so it was ours alone from early evening.

Stayed 2 nights at the Cottage. Scott greeted us with a big smile and showed us to our cottage, very cosy for 2. It was a peaceful experience being surrounded by sounds of beautiful birds. Generous breakfast provisions included the first night but more than enough for our 2 nights stay. Adequately equipped kitchen to cook in. One bonus is that you get free wifi connection here although not full signal but enough to check and reply emails. There is direct and free access to the gardens from the cottage but it's still private. Carpark for one car is just at the doorsteps. Good water pressure in shower. Wooden flooring throughout the cottage, even at the toilet which is a good size and we put our luggage there. Studio layout and there is a nice deck to enjoy your tea and breakfast. Very friendly peacock came to us both mornings. Countdown supermarket just at the high street. Enjoyable stay, located at Bay of Plenty , just 2 hours drive from Auckland central.

My husband went to check out this Katikati local attraction to see if we would refer our B & B guests to it. We really enjoyed our morning wandering around the garden and seeing all the lovely birds and several of them had chicks. We had a really nice lunch in the cafe and the coffee was excellent. The owner was very pleasant as was the lady serving our meal, both warm and friendly and easy to talk to.
