“Ultra-comfortable hospitality”
Reviewed March 3, 2009

Great hospitality from two very personable people, Kay and Trevor. The ultra-comfortable lodge is superbly located in a beautiful, tranquil setting, with birds all around. We stayed here for two nights in January and ate in the lodge on both evenings. The menu was virtually bespoke in terms of your own likes and dislikes and superbly cooked. Trevor is an amateur wine grower and very knowledgeable on New Zealand wines, which flowed constantly throughout our stay. Hosts offer excellent advice on days out in the area and on the best route to your next stop. No wireless internet, but free to use the office computer to access emails. Highly recommended.

This was our third stay with Kay and Trevor and I can't say enough about the wonderful hospitability, service and off course the delicious food. There is only one word that can describe Matahui Lodge – Superb; you both are a credit to the industry.

We have recently enjoyed a six week holiday in NZ. The undoubted high point of the accommodation and hospitality was our stay with Kay and Trevor at Matahui Lodge.

The setting is idlyllic; we had an excellent suite with beautiful views over the countryside and sea and will long remember the vibrant birdsong.

The meals were outstanding for quality and value, both at breakfast and in the evening - the eye fillet steak on my birthday was unforgettably good.

Above all the greeting and the hospitality beat anything that we have experienced in many travels. From the outset we were treated as friends not guests. The evening "sundowner" gathering, where we met their friends and neighbours was immensely enjoyable and unique to Matahui.

Matahui Lodge is excellent in all respects, we wish we could have stayed longer and regret that it is so far away. Thank you so much Kay and Trevor.

We've just come back from a 2-day stay at Matahui Lodge and it is our second visit there, so that says something about the place, doesn't it?
The lodge and the surroundings are wonderful, as are the food and the service, the previous review gives an accurate description; but what drew us back was Kay and Trevor's hospitality and friendliness, they do know how to make their guests welcome. Going to a lodge can be a hit and miss business - it's the people who make the place, so in the case of Matahui, it's definitely a hit - luxurious accommodation, delicious food and welcoming hosts.

We have just returned from two nights at the Matahui Lodge near Tauranga – a wonderful bed and breakfast to indulge yourself at while exploring the Bay of Plenty. This place has it all – a comfy bed, hot shower with great water pressure, plush towels, extreme luxury and great food and wine….all the things we were looking for. The property has two suites (the Merlot suite and the Cabernet suite), both with beautiful views out to the vineyards on the property and the harbour in the distance. We were the only guests there during our stay which was even nicer! The home itself is huge and well presented, and we felt ‘at home’ the moment we arrived. Attention to detail has been shown everywhere – from the comfy linens and plush robes in the room to the complimentary in-room mini bar. There’s also a lovely gym and library (we didn’t spend much time in either) and a hot tub for the ultimate relaxation (which we did use).

What we weren’t necessarily expecting (but are always hoping for) was the extreme hospitality shown by our hosts, Kay and Trevor. They were only too happy to share their home and surroundings with us. From our casual conversations around wine and nibbles each afternoon to the sharing of travel stories over amazing three course gourmet dinners (prepared by Kay and Trevor), we really enjoyed our time with them.

This review cannot do justice to the wonderful time we had and how beautiful, relaxing and luxurious everything was. We would definitely recommend a stay at Matahui Lodge to anyone!
