“Ladies Weekend Birthday Getaway”
Reviewed November 29, 2013

We can't wait to return to this gem of a place! Just two ladies, a red buggy, a birthday to celebrate, Candy's map of the island and we just had the best time ever. Living on Provo means that we too, just have to get away from time to time. I met with Candy who happened unfortunately to be on Provo but she gave me directions to see everything. Both of us had been to Salt Cay before and for me, I can't believe that it took 10 years to return. Candy had everything prepared for us, Pirates Hideaway was charming and with a special atmosphere, meals at Pat's Place, Pa Poley as our guide, donkeys that open gates, sunset cocktails, collecting sea glass and such friendly and wonderful people. Candy is a wealth of knowledge and history and she just knows everything there is to know about this incredible little jewel of an island. I'm bringing my sisters to see you when they come in February! Thanks for a way too short of a stay.

My friend and I stayed 5 nights in this beautiful home. It truly is nicer than a hotel. There are lovely bedrooms and beautiful bathrooms with a huge porch. The owner let's you use the pool connected to her house which is right next store. Candy is a delight to rent from. She is also the greatest historian of Salt Cay. You will learn so much from her. She is so helpful about everything. Just got back Oct. 30, 2013. Want to go back and stay at Candy's.

Room Tip: All the rooms are fantastic!

I spent a week at the "Pirate's Hidaway". Our group of seven rented "Blackbeard's Quarters" and thoroughly enjoyed our stay. The listing description and photos are accurate and thorough. The only thing ambiguous is the location - the homes are located in the "Southwest district" of the island, maybe 100 yards from the sea. It's a convenient location with easy access to the beaches, three restaurants, dive shop and small stores. Our preferred mode of transport was by bicycle. The property was clean and well maintained. Our hostess Candy was especially attentive and helpful. She had our fridge stocked prior to our arrival, gave us a tour of the island and pointed out all the major destinations, and was a fountain of information on the island sites and history. She is a knowledgeable and attentive host who will ensure you have anything you need for a pleasant stay. There are no bad beaches on Salt Cay, but a trip to the north west point is well worthwhile. It's the beach all others aspire to be - pristine white sand, crystal clear turquoise water, and not anther soul in sight. Debbie's restaurant has good specials on Sunday and Wednesday (Ribs and conch respectively), Porter's has good pizza on Fridays, and make sure to visit Ms. Pat's restaurant too before you leave. Try both Ms. Pat's and Debbie's key lime pie! The dive shop is small but has an attentive staff who'll make sure you have an enjoyably diving and/or whale watching experience. Going whale watching with marine biologists conducting research on the whales was a gratifying and informative experience. The dive sites have impressive reef formations and are generally most beautiful when looked at up close - their beauty is in the coral variety more so than other inhabiting wildlife. Most of the dive sites are over reef walls. The shallow water offered the best experience, so don't spend all your dive at 100' on the wall and miss the activity on the shelf at 40'! The best experience of the trip was diving off the south coast and hearing the hump back whales sing. They had to be within a mile of us. We stopped exploring the dive site, leveled off and just listened to them for 15 minutes. It was a touching experience. Returning to the surface, Salt Cay is a lazy little island with plenty of charm. It's safe (we never locked our doors and wandered to each corner of the island), friendly and relaxed in atmosphere. The history of the island is palpable and adds to the experience.

A group of us spent the week from 22 Feb to 2 Mar at Pirates Hideaway in the house with four bedrooms and 2 baths. it was excellent. We had bicycles to use which is really all you need on the island. If only we had enough for everyone, but other than that the place was perfect. Neat and clean, and the hostess exceptional! The kitchen was perfect as we cooked most of our meals and at them in the lanai. The paintings in the house were cute and added to the charm. I loved the painting of Capt Hook on our wall in the bedroom and the shark in the shower. The donkeys who visited us every day only added to the wonderful charm of this island. If you want to get away from it all, Salt Cay is the place to go! We loved Debbie's at the wharf for the rib and conch night and Porter's on the Salinas for another option to eat. Both are good, but just different atmospheres. I will say Porter's has the best restrooms on the island. Debbie's needs a little renovation. If you go, do as I did, and walk the entire island. I think I must have walked over 35 miles in the week, but then I don't dive and only hit the north beach for some wonderful swimming. Whale watching too is available!

Room Tip: The House in the back. This place also has a pool which is definitely a must!

We stayed at Pirates Hideaway for 4 days and nights earlier this month (Feb2013).  We're an American couple with a 1.5 year old son.   We investigated all the options for lodging on Salt Cay and decided on Pirates Hideaway because of the pool (for our kiddo).  In hindsight, there were many other reasons we made the right choice beyond just the pool.  While other places are on the beach, quite frankly none of the beaches the places were on were fit for a toddler to play in (water too rough and beach too steep or too rocky).  We found other beaches that no lodging was on that was perfect for us and our kid, so we'd be driving regardless to beaches.
As other submissions have described Candy is a wonderful host.  Not only does she go out of her way to make sure you're comfortable and get acquainted with the island, she's a walking history museum of the island.  Having been ingrained in the everyday life of the island as long as she as, she has many connections and insights into the nuances of the island - more than most.
Quite frankly, we were underwhelmed by the usability of beaches in general on the island, but exceptionally impressed by the visually beauty of the beaches, island history, and back-country exploration on rugged golf carts.  If you have a kid, a pool is a must.

My husband and I just returned from an 8 night stay on Salt Cay. We did not stay at Pirate’s Hideaway but visited there and got to know it’s owner Candy because we rented a golf cart from her.

Pirate’s hideaway is located across the street from the ocean, but there is a pathway out to a small beach on the ocean which we went to one afternoon to take in the sunset.

Pirate’s hideaway is charming and has wonderful little pool in the backyard. Candy has decorated nicely. She also has a small cottage in the back that can accommodate a family or couples.

Candy and her mom are the perfect hosts, we had tea with them a couple times while there and really enjoyed chatting with them about the island and their other ventures. Candy made sure we were all set with the golf cart and anything else we needed even though we were not staying at her place. She also was available to tour us around the island and teach us about it, but sadly we did not get a chance to do this. It was always great to see her coming down the road, smiling and waving as we passed. She even came to the airport to see us off. Ciao Bella!

Thank you Candy for helping to make this one of our best vacations ever!

Simply put, if you want to connect to the people of Salt Cay and their history, which is so rich and alluring, then stay with Candy at Pirates Hideaway! She is friends not only with ex-pats but islanders, whose families, in most cases, have lived on the island since the days of slavery. Candy, who, in the past, worked as a journalist, is a treasure trove of information about Salt Cay. With the help of a video recorder, she has been helping residents to preserve their culture and heritage, and her work has resulted in an excellent documentary, which she will show you upon request.

Candy met us at the airport, gave us a brief tour of the island, pointing out the best snorkeling spots, and then showed us to our room, which was large, clean, comfortable, charming, and needless to say quiet (on an island of 61 people). It had a small, simple kitchen, hot-water shower, screened windows, and a ceiling fan. She was always there for us, asking if we needed anything, answering questions, making a call or two, and even sharing some home-baked bread.

At the end of our stay, she drove us to the airport and said “Ciao” not Goodbye because we all knew we would be seeing one another again! And we will!
