Can you enjoy a vacation on Salt Cay? The answer is yes if you want to disconnect from everything. This is an island that feels forgotten. It feels like the Caribbean's version of a town that has sort of died - the industry it used to revolve around (salt) left. The island would like to be a tourist haven but it may not have enough to offer naturally. It isn't a particularly lush or typically beautiful place. At it's best (the northern point) it's scrubby and green. The high salt content and lack of soil ensures your trip won't include fresh tropical fruits or vegetables (unless they have been brought in). The snorkeling and diving is okay but not as healthy as you would imagine in such an untouched place. It's a bit stark and barren which can be pretty in it's own way - like an abandoned place. You will be able to relax on your vacation though because there's not much else to do.

Three of us boarded a tiny plane at Provo airport destined for a day on Salt Cay. The flight alone was an adventure! Flying over the islands of the T&C was absoultely breathtaking. We landed on a small grassy airstrip and were greeted by....well, nobody. It didn't take us long to meet a friendly islander who got us where we needed to be and arranged for us to rent a golf cart for the day. Unfortunately we arrived in October and the island was recovering from Hurricane Joaquin. Restaurants and convenience stores were closed. We fortunately met up with Debbie at Coral Reef Bar & Grill and she arranged some lunch and beers for us. We wandered about the island in our cart, took a swim on North Beach- perhaps the most beautiful beach I've ever seen- and explored the ancient colonial building that remain. We had a wonderful time and on the way out met the newest resident of the island, a brand new baby boy- only one of 11 children who live on the island. We will be back though not in October!!!

Salt Cay is incredible - the island is home to about 60 people. There are more animals around than people by far! This island is not for the those looking for luxury and it is quite rustic and charming.
We stayed for 2 nights and if you like to rough it a bit, this is a must see! There are donkeys, cows and chickens that just freely roam the streets. The people on the island are amazing and everyone is very friendly and helpful.
Make sure you rent a buggy - it is very hot and arid here compared to the other islands in Turks and Caicos! You need the shade and wind a cart provides. You must go see North Beach - the water is the most amazing I have seen anywhere! Unfortunately, we were there just after a tropical storm and the water was a little rough, but it isn't always like that!

My husband and daughter were skeptical about spending the money for a flight to Salt Cay. However, once we arrived the fun began. Debbie met us at the airport with a golf cart. She shared the history of the island and informed us about places to see on the island. We went to several beaches, a beautiful vista, and saw the island donkeys. What an interesting island! North Beach is STUNNING! We were the only people on North Beach. The sand was white and soft. The water gorgeous. North Beach IS the Corona commercial! We loved seeing the flamingos in the wild. The island cows and donkeys are hilarious and friendly. Salt Cay is definitely worth the trip. Best ever!
