“Why would you ever stay anywhere else?”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed October 27, 2009

If you're interested in a real island get away, you can't do better than Middle Caicos. The island only has 200 full time inhabitants, no big chain hotels, no scene, no night life. It's the exact opposite of New York City. It does have some of the best snorkeling I've ever experienced (I even saw a juvenile Lemon Shark on this trip), beautiful blue waters, secluded and mostly empty beaches, amazing birds, gorgeous sunrises and sunsets and blissful solitude.

Blue Horizon Resort is located on top of limestone hills and caves and the ocean breezes and lizards keep the bugs at bay. The views are amazing and the cottages are perfect for anyone who enjoys staying in a real beach house. While they are all equipped with satelite TV, wifi and airconditioning, they're still the kind of places you don't feel horrible about walking into with sandy feet. There is no restaurant onsite yet, but it really didn't bother us. We enjoyed grabbing a couple of beers out of our fridge and strolling down to the beach for sunset.

The beach is open to the public, as are all Middle Caicos beaches, but we were almost always alone. Though tour groups did come through, they rarely seemed to linger for more than an hour or two. There is a cove right off the beach that was perfect for swimming, even on the days when the water was roughest. We even snorkeled there and saw a small ray, barracudas, and lots of fish.

The new caretakers, Christi and Dallas, are lovely and very hospitable. We highly recommend having them take you to and from Provo in their boat- it is much easier and quicker than the ferry- plus a lot more fun. And they were more than happy to help us with everything we needed, from a last minute car rental to extra sun screen. They really love the island and have great recommendations for things to see and do.

This is a long overdue review of this wonderful little resort. We had the pleasure of spending ten days there during the 2007 Christmas break, and it was a thoroughly relaxing and enjoyable experience. Blue Horizon is not one of those behemoth generic resorts that you can find all over the Caribbean, far from it! It simply consists in seven cottages scattered over a nice area overlooking a stunningly beautiful cove and beach known as Mudjin Harbour. We stayed at the Tropico Cottage, which was simply but tastefully furnished and, perhaps even more importantly, was spotlessly clean. It had a bedroom area (with a comfortable bed), a living area (with an equally comfortable couch), a kitchen and dining area, and a screened porch. The cottage had windows on every side, which was great for ventilation: there was a steady and good, cooling, breeze blowing through.
Making the reservation arrangements was equally breezy. We were always answered promptly and courteously. Since Middle Caicos only has limited grocery (and dining) facilities, we took advantage of the resort’s grocery service and e-mailed them our grocery list beforehand. All our supplies were therefore waiting for us when we arrived, which was just great. We had made all the arrangements through Mike and Mikki (the previous owners/managers), but we were picked up at the airport by Ernest Forbes, the newly appointed manager. He proved to be as helpful as Mike and Mikki had been. Amongst other things, he set up a tour of the island for us. Our guide was Cardinal Arthur, and we can but highly recommend going on a tour with him. He truly was the perfect guide: interesting, friendly, and patient (he did not mind stopping his vehicle whenever we wanted to take a picture). It felt more like going for a ride with an old friend than being on a guided tour.
Our days were occupied with exploring the island (following the Crossing Place Trail is a definite must, as is walking across the causeway between North and Middle Caicos), and vegging out on the beach. There is indeed very little to do on Middle Caicos as far as entertainment and shopping are concerned. So, if you are the type of person who needs lots of action and crowds and noise, then Middle Caicos and the Blue Horizon Resort are definitely not for you. If, however, you are looking for a quiet and heavenly little spot to get away from it all, then seek no further.

We spent 8 days in total peace in a beautiful location. Mike and Mikki were the perfect hosts making our stay worry and stress free. Thye even allowed us to adopt "Smiley" their dog! We highly recommend Blue Horizon if you want to get away from tv, telephone, and internet and only hear the ocean waves! We definitely want to go back!

We only had a week but it was so restful that it felt like a month. No phones, tv, internet....just the sound of wind and waves. Our accommodation was clean, bright and modern and we slept like logs with the doors open - the front of the cottage faces the ocean with glass sliders that lead to a screened porch. We awoke to a fabulous view and took off down the beach on the old Crossing Place Trail which goes for miles along unpopulated beach - we were gone for 3 hours and never saw anyone else. Its a great place for photography, birdwatching and beachcombing. One morning was spent exploring the caves which network the island for miles underground. A local guide filled us in on the history and lore of the caves and pointed out stalagtites, stalagmites, bats and Lucayan Indian ruins. I give this place two thumbs up and hope to return to this unspoiled paradise soon.

We stayed a week at the Blue Horizon August '02. You fly into Provo ( the most developed ot the Turks and Caicos Islands) and take a 12 minute flight on a 6-8 seater to Middle Caicos. The commuter flight cost $90/person round-trip but is well worth it and the scenery is spectacular. You will save that much and more on accomodations and taxes vs what you would pay in Provo. We went in August (off season) so we were the only guest at the resort when we arived. The owners are very hospitable and accomodating. They let us check out two of the villas and gave us our choice. The cost was very reasonable and much less than comparable accomodations in Provo. All the villas are ocean view and a short walk to the spectacular beach. The Villas are nothing fancy but are very clean and roomy with kitchens. (you need a kitchen since there are no restaurants on site). There is a restaurant (Daniel's) a few miles away which serves local Conch, Grouper and Lobster. We had the Conch and it was very good. Or you can buy it and cook it yourself. There is also Annie's (very) little store if you run out of food. The owners will also shop for you for food in Povo if you give them a grocery list in advance or you can bring your own food, but shopping in Provo is difficult since you have to take a taxi which is very expensive. We were there in August and it was never very hot or humid. There is a constant breeze out of west and you don't even need A/C. The best thing about the resort is the 50 acre setting overlooking 40 foot or so rock cliffs, rock caves, and miles of undeveloped beach. We hiked for miles and never saw another person. This is not your average beach. The sand is coral white, the water is clear and emerald blue and relatively calm. You can swim and snorkle right off the beach around the dragon cay rock formation or in the cove or just lay on any of the miles of beach. You won't find a more peaceful location. We did not even see a boat all week. If you want peace and privacy on a beautiful beach setting and nately go back.
