We just got back from a trip to the Middle Caicos Island, where our family stayed there for 1 week. Everything was awesome! We stayed at Blue Horizon resort and the views are beyond what photos can show. We hopped a short plane trip from Pensacola Florida, took a cab from there to the grocery store for supplies, most everything is closed on Sundays and we wanted to get our provisions out of the way.The taxi driver said no problem and he kept our luggage and came back at a designated time to pick us up.We loaded up and went to meet a ferry that took us to the North Caicos Island where BHR had arranged a rental car to meet us to drive another 20 minutes or so to our resort on Middle Caicos. Opt for a jeep as the roads are rustic.
We were greeted and settled in to our place which was a 2 bedroom cottage overlooking Mudjin Harbor. We had a kitchen and lots of area for my husband, and I and our 12 and 14 year old girls.
We booked a boat trip with Dolphys who is a local fisherman who does trips. We fished and snorkeled. It was awesome. He has the patience of a saint, putting up with our crew. We caught yellow tailed snapper and happened upon a boat with lobster fisherman and Dolphys made a deal and we bought our lobster for that nights dinner. It is the end of their lobster season in March and lobster was getting harder to find. We had eaten it even night thus far and loved it. It is the spiny lobster that tastes sweeter than Maine lobster to us. Most places serve it grilled with lemon and butter and it is delicious. We ate at Mudjin Grill most every day for lunch or dinner. The food was spectacular and the bar serves great drinks.
Adam the chef made a huge spectacle friday night after cooking and serving our fresh catch to us with much excitement from the entire staff.
From Christy the resort caretaker to Brenda, and Patrice the servers, to John the owner and the various kitchen chefs, we had a great, unique experience.
Most people we talked to going down to the islands were going to big resort hotels much like the ones we have here in Florida, and after comparing notes at the airport on the way home, I felt like we had such a different experience.
We mingled with the locals, and rode through their small villages. The people on Middle and North Caicos love tourists and treat you so well.It feels genuine and you get a sense that they respect us and enjoy our visit to their country, rather than making you feel resented as we have felt on other islands,
They still have some kinks to work out with the internet though, so if they say it is not working, we met a couple who went and rented a box from Digicel a local internet provider and they had internet while they were there.I was ok without it but some people need it for work. It worked in Mudjin Grill and sitting on the porch of the resort office. Where our girls hung out to check and update their instagram and Facebook.
Our cell phones are at&t and they worked fine, but we forgot to turn off the data roam and quickly ran up our phone bill using too much data, as emails and stuff pushes through even when you are not thinking you are using data .At&t fixed us up though.
Bring Avon skin so soft and bug spray for the no see ums. They can be brutal if the wind is not blowing. We found that there were very little at BHR while we were there as there was a good breeze going most often.
Another fun thing to do is take a cave tour. We went with a man who has been there many years and he did a good job.
We visited Iguana Island but it was not as exciting as it was 10 years ago. The population on the island is not as big as it was in years past, and my daughter saw plenty of lizards at the resort. That was a trip I would not repeat since we paid a lot of money to get a private boat trip over. Use Dolphys for any and all boating trips, his price was way better and we felt a much better deal than anyone else has. Nobody seems to provide ice on the boat trips in our experience, so we asked for a cooler and brought ice. Water and ice are dear commodities over there.
Be sure to have good sturdy shoes for hiking, or doing the cave tour. The beach has a lot of areas on Mudjin Harbor where we liked to look for shells. Water shoes or toe shoes are very useful as the rocks blend with the sand and toe stubbing is painful. I liked using my toe shoes best. We found a lot of shells. Everyone told us places to look but Mudjin Harbor gave us the best supply. We went out early in the am and with the tide changes.
We loved the Blue Horizon Resort and plan to go back again!

Once of the loveliest ocean views we've seen. Reminiscent of the West Coast, but completely unspoiled. Great trails to walk along the cliffs (but do bring long trousers). Not to be missed.

there are different walkways that go to different parts of the beach. The lower beach I think is called Secret Beach you walk down a path and thru a cave to get to it so beautiful. My favorite part of our trip to Turks and Caicos.

After seeing all the photos on TA of Mudjin Harbor, I knew I wanted to visit. I had no idea how much pictures could not do this place justice. It is absolutely breathtaking. After parking at the "resort", take the path down to the beach which brings you around a gorgeous cave-like wall to the water's edge. You can also take the path up past Mudjin Bar and Grill to see the "hidden beach" down a set of cave stairs. Very unique and so pretty! This place will always stay in my memory as it was so unbelieveably gorgeous. It was the highlight of our T&C trip.
