“Lovely”
Reviewed April 11, 2012

For a hostel, this place is great, really chilled, lovely owners, and a cool communal area. Tried having a BBQ but was attacked by mosquitoes which was a shame. I was staying in the bunkhouse and needed the toilet in the middle of the night and had to go outside and into the main lodge, just like camping though! If you don't mind basic accommodation then I'd highly recommend this place.

Just returned from a weekend at the Wolf Den. At $30 per night, this hostel is incredible value for the area. There are a variety of rooms - dorm style or more private, a large communal kitchen capable of handling groups, a great dining area, an even better lounge, a sauna, firepit, and more. Everything is just fine and will be comfortable for those used to nice hostelling experiences. Excellent location very close to Algonquin Park and within walking distance of great hiking and snowshoeing. Ben, the owner, is very knowledgeable and helpful. I would definitely stay here again. I thought it was just great for what I needed.

I stayed here in June after a weekend workshop further north and plan to stay again this October. A kilometre from the entrance to the park, the Wolf den has a choice of rooms and cabins from private to shared and even has a sauna on the property. Across the road from Oxtongue River, it is tucked into a forest lot and I gather there are nature trails on the property. I didn't explore the forest, spending time just outside the main building gardening to pay for one of two nights accommodation. I liked that payment option. Found out more about the area from my co-gardener. The second day I spent kayaking on the river.

Wolf den has a great kitchen that accommodates a few chefs at a time and has a comfortable lounge upstairs for reading and writing up one's adventures. They also attract an eclectic group of travellers. It books up quickly in the winter and accommodates private gatherings. Looking forward to my next stay. Oh, and did I mention - very affordable and clean.

We have stayed here many times and always use it as a start point to explore Algonquin Park. The options for our stays range from a typical dorm set up to private cabins or double rooms in the main lodge. This is as close to a backpackers Hostel as I have seen in Ontario and we always enjoy meeting people from all over the world. The kitchen and facilities are great. Sauna, BBQ, fire pit, loft lounge all add to a great near wilderness experience. Ben is the guy that runs the place and is wonderful to deal with. We stay here whenever we are in the area. I have stayed as a family, a couple and with friends and it works for each scenario very well. Hey..its cheap too!

Room Tip: For a couple or family..stay in one of the private cabins

We stayed at Wolfs Den in June 2011 for two nights. Keep in mind that this is a Hostel and it's targeted to backpackers. It's a good place to meet other backpackers and people who are interested in nature and alternative lifestyles.
As a lot of other motels and lodges in the area, the place is located right next to highway 60, just a few kilometers to the parks east gate visitor center. There is little traffic noise from highway 60 so don't expect to be in abandoned wilderness.

The place itself has a main lodge with a big, fully equipped kitchen. You get some space in the huge fridge and the food shelf to store your food. There is no dishwasher so all guest shall do their dishes. There is a really cosy area upstairs with couches and music instruments. So it's most likely to meet other guests. There are some rooms in the basement of the mainlodge. Other rooms and dorms are located in cottages spread around the main house. The sleeping cottages have no bathroom so you either use the washrooms in the main lodge or the separate cottage with toilets and showers which is located in the center of the property.

There is a BBQ area outside with seats and tables so this can end up in a snugly summer evening pastime.

This place gives you an adventurous feeling somewhere between a campground and a hostel. The owner seems to put a lot of effort in running the place environmentally friendly which is a really positive fact in this sensitive ecosystem. They also offer classes to study the plants and the ecosystem of the park.

Though there is some space for improvement. They should do some shopping to get some new bed linens as they have seen their best days already. It had some stains and holes. And they could also invest in some new towels as there was some moldy touch to it. The cottages could be furnished with more love and effort. Altogether the place felt a little run down. However, nothing serious.

I would recommend this place for backpackers and people who want to get to know other travellers and are looking for an economic option to check out Algonquin Park. If you expect more comfort and privacy e.g. as a couple you should think about other options as they might offer more luxury for just a litte surcharge.

I had originally planned on staying at the Wolf Den for 3 days and I ended up staying there 2 weeks. Ben, the owner, is awesome and knows a lot about nature, the girls who worked there were so nice and helpful, the setting and the "vibe" (sorry for that word) is just perfect. Ben does all he can to keep the place environmentally-friendly, and he does a good job. I want to go back there so badly, I just loved it!

If you're looking for a really affordable, comfortable, friendly, international, relaxing place that's next door to one of the most beautiful provincial parks in Ontario, THIS is it! The Wolf Den has the feel of a hostel (lots of international folks, a huge, fully-equipped shared kitchen and dining room, free tea and coffee, a lounge with games and musical instruments, etc), but also makes you feel like you're on a camping adventure (awesome outdoor showers, although there are also indoor facilities, BBQs, picnic tables, a fire pit...). It's really close to Huntsville if you feel the need browse artisan shops, have a fancy meal or go to a movie, but is also really close to waterfalls, rapids... not to mention Algonquin Park! AND if you feel like pampering yourself, they have a sauna!! I just got back, and am already looking forward to the next time I get to up!
