We liked the layout of this pub\restaurant. You did not get the feeling of being overlooked wherever you sat. Had a nice meal and drink here.

It's a pity that Tripadvisor doesn't have a category for the British pub. By choosing reviewers to choose from "hotels" or "restaurants" one can easily fall between two stools. The Salutation is a pub that sells food, I don't think it has any pretence to be a restaurant.

Externally, it looks pretty, with flower-baskets and bright paintwork. It was a coaching-inn at one time, and the arch to the stable area is still there. Unfortunately, the owners some time ago decided to maximize floor space, by knocking out internal walls and roofing-over the courtyard. As a consequence, The Salutation is too open and barn-like (although quite airy) for me.

Beers are mostly of the the fizzy, keg variety, and can't attempt to compete with the well-kept real ales of The Turk's Head, The Cumberland Arms or The Tynemouth Lodge. In fact I don't recall seeing any hand-pulled beer.

I have never eaten in The Salutation, but the food looks to be mass- catering pub food, with everything bought - in ready prepared, I should think (Apologies if I am speculating, here, it's just what it looks like). During the day, there are a lot of pensioners eating there, and in the early evening they seem to sell a lot of burgers and chips and that sort of food. And a lot of lager.

Visited here as a couple for a pub lunch. Food was good by pub standards, there was plenty of it and it wasn't too expensive. I ordered a coffee with the meal which after 15 minutes of waiting had to remind the staff to make it - and it tasted dreadful (but you can't judge a pub by its coffee).

The place was dirty, waste food over the floor and the tables sticky, there was also a group of rowdy lads shouting and swearing in the bar in the middle of the day. Didn't help that there appeared to be only one member of staff on duty serving, in what is a big pub.

If I was desparate for lunch I would go again, the food was fine, but you wouldn't want to sit and soak up the ambiance.

Tip 1, Don't go for thefood. After waiting for 45 mins to get our lunch it was terribly disappointing. Chips were cold portions were poor, a chiken breast, or was it a sparrows breast?. The lady on the table next to us ordered a mixed grill and received 3 sausages and the smallest steak ever! No other meat at all. Fine for a drink but will never eat in there again. I'm normally asily pleased but not this time....
