I’ve stayed at Hotel Nikos several times in recent years, and I recommend it highly. Panagiota, Nikos and their family give a warm welcome and are very helpful with info about Matala, restaurants, etc. The rooms are clean, well-maintained, and most offer small sitting areas just outside the room that are pleasant places to sit, read, write and watch the day drift by. The beds are fine, although I find that most beds in Greece are very hard. The bathroom and shower are fine, cost like most in Europe but relatively modern, and each room has its own a/c and heater. The location is about as good as you can get, less than one block off of the main street but fairly quiet.

Great hotel, and a great location. Free parking only 50 yards from the hotel. Location of this perfect is perfect because it is away from all the hustle and bustle, but only two minute walk to the centre of the town. The staff were courteous and friendly, nothing was too much trouble. Great breakfast. Would not hesitate to return to Hotel Nikos.

Room tip: All seemed good to me.

Small but tastefully modernly decorated room/bathroom. Comfortable bed and good fan and a/c. Good and adequate breafast in nice environment, with extra payment. Very friendly propiertes. Nearby and free parking. Just a few minutes walk from the main streets and beach in Matala.

Room tip: Room on second floor is probably more private with its balcony

We had not heard a great deal about Matala so we decided to spend three nights there.
Our first priority was to find a place to stay. We phoned Hotel Nikos and after a short chat with Panagiota we booked a premier room.
A few weeks later we arrived at Matala and boldly drove through a mass of people into town. Where's the hotel? No problem we were confronted by a 'No Entry' sign and had to turn left in a street crowded with vehicles going in both directions. We had moved about 30 metres when we spotted Hotel Nikos on the right. With no chance to stop we carried on another 40 or so mteres and found the hotel car park. It was then easy to park, grab our bags and walk back to the hotel.
We were signed in by Panagiota and shewn to our room which was an absolute delight. There was an enormous double bed, modern fitted furniture, plenty of lighting, air conditioning, plug for kettle/hairdrier and neatly tucked away, an en-suite toilet and shower. It was very light and airy and spotlessly clean Outside the door was a small sitting area with a table and two comfortable chairs which over looked the dining area. This latter was covered by vines or similar foliage and was quite cool despite the heat outside. For us the hotel was a perfect base, comfortable and welcoming. Our daily routine was to go out for breakfast, return and read, go off for coffee, back to the books, out for a snack lunch, back for a rest and more reading. It was during this time that Nikos would kindly give us plates of sliced fruit. The evening would begin with a drink at one place and later we would have dinner somewhere else. We spent the rest of the day strolling around the village and mingling with everyone and enjoying the wonderful atmosphere. It was our rule that we would visit a different each time for meals, drinks etc. Overall we found that the service, standard of food and ambience in those places we visited was very good. On our last evening we made our way to the south of the bay and clambered up the steep stone steps to the restaurant La Scala which was somewhat up market. Everything about the place was excellent, the welcome, the attention of the staff, the range of the menu, the style and taste of the food. The experience made a superb finale to our break. It is enjoyable just being in Malata. Crowded yes but no noise or rowdy behaviour however if you have a car there are other places of interest nearby. The ancient site of Phaistos is well worth a visit, Calamaki Beach with its beach side tavernas makes a pleasant change.

We chose to stay at Hotel Nikos after recomendations from another family that had stayed their. The rooms were very clean with alot of extras that was a nice surprise but what made it special was the owners Nikos & Panyiota .You feel like a family member and are treated as one while you are there.Very close to the beach and restaurants as well.Nikos also has free parking about 30 metres away from the hotel which is a big help as well cause the beach parking area isn't free.Highly reccomend this hotel as the best in Matala and we can't wait to go back and stay at Hotel Nikos next time we visit Crete !!!!
