“One of our best holidays ever”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed June 27, 2013

we read all the reviews before we headed off on our holiday on the 10th June 2013. I can honestly say that I agree with all the positive comments 100%. The hotel is very clean, the rooms are big and the beds are not your usual cheaper hotel type, we did have really good nights sleep on them.
Christine and Van gellis the owners live at the hotel, so are always around to help and deal with any problems. George the bar manager is the devil in disguise, his shots and cocktails are lethal. He holds happy hour all night, as the resort does not have a pub scene, when your evening meal is finished, with us usually 11pm, most guests head back to the hotel. I recommend you do the same if you intend to go, the bar usually has a lively crowd (depending on the other guests), as for restaurants we did not have a bad meal in any we visited, but we did visit Georges restaurant following the brilliant comments and we were not disappointed,

Everyone before us have given such great reviews which we agree with 100%. Would definitely go back, so if you are using tripadvisor to make your mind up then go for it you will not be disappointed. Regarding Polichrono as johny58 has said it has all you need, our advice is to use the beach either side of the main strip as you get less people. Good exercise to walk along the beach to Hanioti.. about 5km with one bar/restaurant midway to stop for a drink. Wonderful crystal clear water all the way along the coast.

Room Tip: Any of the rooms are OK, I took pictures of many of them and they all were very nice.

We stayed here again this year and are writing another review as we really do love the place. As many other people have said Christina, Vangelis and George the barman are great and really go out of their way to make your holiday special- anything you ever need they will accommodate. The hotel is spotless and Vangelis keeps the grounds looking beautiful. The rooms are cleaned every day and have a lovely balcony to sit on in the evenings. The hotel is a small hotel and perfect for couples. I would say its not really a suitable hotel for children as the pool is small and quiet for people to relax around and not really for children jumping in and out and splashing around and there really is nothing for children to do there as the bar area etc again is catered more for adults/couples. There is no entertainment for children and no toys etc. Christina and family will always make children welcome if they are there but if you are thinking of taking chilldren there are probably much better suited hotels for you.
Polichrono itself we love. It is a greek village with lovely restaurants and bars. If you are wanting english touristy places it wont be for you. The hotel is in the town and surrounded by houses and a school so you get a real feel of being in the heart of the community which we love. The seafront is a short walk and there is a little town with supermarkets and amazing bakerys nearby. We have never had a bad meal in all the years we have been to Polichrono- some of our favourites include Georges and Nefeli- but there are lots to choose from to suit everyone. We were paying usually no more than 30 Euros for a couple having a three course meal with wine which i think is great value for the quality of the meal. The hotel itself does some nice snacks, a lovely greek salad and really nice milkshakes and also does a few breakfast bits which are nice and very good value. The bar at the hotel is a lovely place to relax in the evning when you come back from your meal and everyone who visits usually has a chat about their day etc so very social if you want it to be. Lots of people are return guests so that just goes to show how great the hotel must be. We will definitely be back and cant wait!

I booked this holiday as a last minute deal for me and my 10 year old son. After booking I read through the reviews and wondered if I had made a mistake with Polichrono. We've just arrived back yesterday and we've had the best two weeks possible!
As everyone in previous reviews have said, the hotel has the most wonderful, pleasant staff - my son thought George was marvellous as he taught him card tricks to try out on our fellow guests! The room we had was clean, spacious and pleasantly decorated. Cooking facilities weren't great but the last thing I wanted to do on holiday was cook!
The pool was small but exceptionally clean but to be honest we didn't spend any time there as we prefer the beach.
Friday is BBQ night which is good value for money with delicious food. I would recommend that everyone should give it a go and take advantage of George's free shots!
Like I said previously, I wasn't particularly worried about the hotel as the reviews were excellent, it was the resort that concerned me. Yes the beach on the main strip was manic but you didn't have to walk far to find quieter beaches. The sand was very pebblely, I would advise some beach shoes. We went a number of times on the bus to Kalithea which is three or four towns along the coast, takes about ten minutes and only costs 1euro sixty. The beach there is beautiful, soft sand and the water is so clear.
Back at Polichrono, there are plenty of tavernas with good food. Our favourites were Flegra with the exceptionally friendly and obliging staff, plus the star attraction of the clever parrot who my son was obsessed with! The owner, Yani, would perform tricks with it and my son would sit with it on his head! Nefeli restaurant was our other favourite which also had excellent food and the lady who owned it was so pleasant and obliging. One evening my son knocked a full glass of coke over himself ( gormless begger!) she not only brought him a replacement drink for free but also some replacement clothes, just bring them back when you are next passing! How kind was that.
If you are wanting a quiet, get away from it all holiday then Polichrono might not be for you. I have visited Greek islands previously which have been more quaint and remote, more a couples holiday, however for us there was the right balance of peace and activity. A couple we met in our hotel hired a car and visited further a field towns and villages so there is always that option. They said it was a lot cheaper to hire the vehicle yourself than go through the rep though so shop about.
I can't end this review without mentioning the fresh water turtle trek. What a trek!! It took us about an hour and a half to get there and it's rough going. Steep, dusty tracks, however we soldiered on because we were looking forward to the end result. We met some other nutty people from our hotel who were also battling on in the heat with little shade, people who we formed a bond with for the rest of the holiday and will remain friends with now we have returned to cloudy, miserable Britain. We became the turtle troop! When we finally got to the fresh water pool it was rather unimpressive. Yes there were turtles in their natural enviroment which was wonderful but we expected to be able to sit around the lake and admire the view; our friends brought a picnic and were going to set up camp after the long journey, have refreshments and take photos before the downhill decent ( which was a hell of a lot easier than the journey there!) However, there was just a small incline which allowed you to view the turtles. My son was the only one brave enough to venture to the bottom, he took photos for members of the turtle troop - good ones I might add! All in all we had a good day and met wonderful people along the way.
A good holiday is what you make of it. We met people who sat around the pool every day, people who hired transport and went off exploring. Couples who didn't like to sit about in the sun and walked from town to town exploring the shops and tavernas. At the end of the day, your hotel is your base, as long as it is clean and friendly - which the Ammos definately is - the weather is hot and sunny, which it was, then it's up to the individual to create their own holiday that suites them. We did and we are missing it all already!

Room Tip: Rooms opposite the school are noisy. Rooms round the pool have some noise from the bar. Join in and...

Just returned from a week at Hotel Ammos and can recommend this place wholeheartedly.Run by some of the nicest people you could ever wish to meet.Polichrono is ok it had everything we needed.5 minutes in the car to Hanioti and another 5 minutes to Pefkohori.10-15 minutes in the other direction to Kalithea.Miles of empty beaches between theese resorts if you want to get away from it all like we do.Thessaloniki airport was hassle free unlike some of the islands. Will go again if the price is right.Thomson seemed well organised too.

A very pleasant but very small hotel family run with extremely friendly and helpful owners. very clean with maid service every day except Sunday . Had a really good time, the weather was fantastic. Christina is a wonderful lady.
The rooms and the communal area are clean and comfortable, although the pool area is small it is ample for the amount of guests that are staying. And beds and umbrellas where available all day - no need to put towels on beds here.
The hotel is situated at the top of the village with a pleasant walk to the beach. Although the return walk was uphill!! Which can be a struggle to some.

The resort is lovely quiet place with plenty of good restaurants the Cockney café being our favourite, food portions where huge and drinks were on par with others in resort that is 3 euros and the belly buster breakfast takes some eating - and a great roast dinner on Sunday. 2 x beautiful gyros and a 2 beers for 5 euros is to be found all over, a filling lunch or snack anytime.

The beach is man made gravel type plenty of sunbeds and umbrellas available for the price of a drink which you would buy anyway 3 euros - would advise jellies for the beach - the donut man that sells donuts on the beach are so fresh you will buy one every day. Just leave your towels and go and have some lunch anywhere.

Main meals roughly about 10 euros a head with drink- snacks 2.80 to 5 euros each.
Supermarket prices - bread 0.75 euro - Gigs 3.20 euro - beer 1 euro - coke 1 euro - water 1.25 euro for six 1.5 litre bottles - you can avoid carrying the water to hotel by buying at hotel for 2 euro.

Just a couple of negatives which people need to know - the front rooms face the road and a junior school which starts at 8.30 till about two - well until school holidays -then later on older children play basketball until dark - so ask for poolside or side rooms for more peace.

All in all I would definitely recommend this small but lovely hotel to anyone.
And will returning again

Room Tip: Front rooms face road - so chose poolside for more peace

We had a 1-bedroomed apartment (basically 2 double bedrooms, not a sitting area as you usually get), with small kitchen area, small bathroom and a very large balcony off each room. It was kept tidy and clean, although nothing was dusted very well. The only place to sit was on the balcony, which was fine for first 10 days until the heavens opened for 3 whole days before we left, so then had to sit inside on the bed! Ammos is situated up a small incline, less than 10 minutes from the beach, shops, restaurants. Yes, the pool is small, but we are not pool-people so that didn't worry us. Drinks in the bar were comparable to bars/restaurants, which was good for the couple of times we drank there. Didn't try the barbeque night, but quite a few did I believe. Overall the hotel was good and we enjoyed our stay. Opposite a school, which wasn't a problem, but local children used the playground in the evenings and were rather noisy for an hour or so until it got dark, which did make sitting out there with a drink a less than relaxing time.

Polichrono itself is a dump, the beach was dirty and crowded (even in September), full of Serbians, who never spend money, eat their own food/drink, have loads of kids who they let use the beach as a toilet (and not just a quick wee I might add), and make lots of noise! You got free beds/umbrellas on the beach if you bought refreshments, which was good, but you honestly didn't need an umbrella as the beds were so close you were under that of your neighbour! There are quite a few shops, but most sell cheap rubbish. There are a few good restaurants, so we had many good meals accompanied by very good local wine (€7 a litre). Actually, prices overall were very good compared to other places in Greece, but I think that's to get people to spend as, apart from the Greeks and Brits (and we were very few in number compared to the coach loads of serbians who flood the area), no-one else seemed to!!

Overall, we had a good holiday, apart from the things mentioned above and the weather on our last 3 days. Although we met people who have been going back year after year, we would never, ever, go back to Polichrono again, it's too crowded for our taste, but if you go you probably couldn't do better than the Ammos.
