“Excellent hotel in the countryside”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed August 28, 2013

On our way to Berlin we stopped in Schwerin and wanted a high standard hotel in the reasonable vicinity. The Schloss basthort did fit the requirement. The main building is a lovely old castle with a great view over a the country side. As a family of 5 we took one of apartments and. Room standard was brilliant and excelllently equipt. Probably the best we've ever seen.

Yes, the hotel is placed in the middle of nowhere, but the offers outdoor activities and you can always drive to Schwerin to get some more urban recreation. The children loved the place and our only regret is that we did'nt stay longer.

Great service, and the food in the restaurant was very nice as well. The high point for ut was the banana ice cream that was fresher than any banana ice cream we've tasted and we have sampled.

Authentic castle experience. Fabulous location in little village next to a huge forest. A little hard to find. The hotel is split into three separate buildings, quite different like three different hotels. Stayed in the old castle where rooms are modernised but still have a lot of ancient atmosphere, well equipped with comfy beds and nice views. 15 min walk to nearby lake.

Lounge areas of the castle are impressive and comfortable with an ancient and magic touch. In neighboring building is a nice, clean, modernised and well maintained pool area. The modern annexes appeared not very attractive but they are probably comfortable.

Breakfast large selection, good quality. However, breakfast restaurant not very cosy and more space is needed around the buffet as it gets crowded during weekends.

Front desk service and breakfast service friendly but not particularly professional. Extra bed expensive compared to comfort, but otherwise good value for money.

We came to the Schloss Basthorst on the recommendation of a friend that had been here before (he joined us as well).

It's an amazing place and a hidden jewel - in the middle of the forest.

The hotel:
The rooms are spacious and nicely decorated, the bed is great, the shower is good, the service is good (very good for price/quality ratio!)
The breakfast is really good with a large variety of everything - from fresh fruits to eggs.
The restaurants are good, and you can choose for a more simple meal at the castle or a full dinner at the restaurant (my favorite -absolutely delicious!) They have a good selection of wines as well.
I didn't have time to enjoy the spa, but seemed perfect to me and it's on my list for the next time i visit this property.

what to do nearby:
the hotel is in the middle of a forest and nearby a lake, and walks on the forest in the region are a real pleasure.
You can easily spot deers and other wild animals during sun rise/ sun set hours - so keep your eyes open!
there is a climbing park for adventurous people nearby and the castle in Schwerin is worth the visit

Golf
The Winston Golf club (5 min by car from the Schloss) is amazing.
We played on the new WinstonLINKS course - which is breathtaking and a fantastic golf course - completely different than any other course i have been so far.
WinstonOPEN is green, with plenty of water hazards, and a joy to play.
Staying at the hotel you get a discount on the green fee, but i recommend booking their golf packages - very attractive prices.

I'm coming back to this hidden jewel and absolutely recommend for anyone that is looking for a relaxing weekend in the middle of nature.

Beautiful buildings and great interiors. The spa department was pretty calm, even in a busy period in late July. The food in the restaurant was excellent, from breakfast, lunch and dinner. We brought our kids, but there weren´t many other kids around. There is a kind of grown up atmosphere and I would recommend families with small children to find somewhere else to stay.

The staff was easily accessible, but some of them seemed a little reserved. A little more smiling would lift the whole experience a lot.

We visited Schwerin, located about 20 minutes away. Impressive castle and nice town. The surroundings are otherwise pretty rural and calm, with lots of woods and pastures.

This is a nice hotel, the rooms are individually decorated. The bath towles are small but are changed daily. The arrangement we had included a 3 course dinner. The food was good, but I must say the fish had a strong smell and I did not eat it. The veal was great.
It is not far from Basthorst to the exceptional golf course WINSTON and that is a MUST! I would say one of the best courses in Germany! (my handicap is 17)

Room Tip: The room in the Schloss do not have a mosquito net on the windows, but are more charming than in the...

This is a great hotel. The location is really fabulous, peace and quiet in the middle of the countryside, but close to Müritz, Ostsee and at edge of Mecklenburger Seenplätte. We had rooms in the Schloss itself. The rooms were huge, four poster beds, separate shower and huge bathtub. Room on top floor could be hot in summer, very small windows to open. Nice rituals products in bathroom. Restaurant food really good, we happily ate there for 3 evenings, but might be a bit much for longer. Didnt have time to try the spa, small pool, but nicely done.
Downsides: Towels could be bigger and fluffier, and staff need to smile more! I would come back here though, really for the location and rooms.

Room Tip: Room 105 has a really big terrace over the entrance to the schloss block. A room at the back of the...

One of the best hotelexperiences we have had in Germany. We stayed in a juniorsuite in the castle. Huge room - very clean and comfortable. Because of the atmosphere, I would definately choose the castle instead of the newer adjacent buildings even though they are probably just as good. The spa is okay. Our 6 year old daugther was welcome there - but it is intendend for adults. Great food at the restaurant and fantastic nature if you want to go for a walk.
