We stayed at Castle Hornberg on a recent holiday to Germany. Our four year old son wanted to spend the night in a castle so we did some internet research to find a castle hotel that was on our vacation route. You have to drive up a very steep hill and through an archway into the courtyard to arrive at the castle, this was impressive. In the reception area there is a "Brave Knight" so our son was immediately amused by this. We had arranged a room looking over the Neckar which was in the tower. There were many stairs but it was easy to navigate. Our room had a separate single bed built into the wall which our son really thought was neat. The room was very comfortable, although too warm. No air conditioning (of course, this is Europe) but there was no ceiling fan either. This was really the only downfall to our stay. The view over the Neckar was impressive. We toured the ruins of the castle built in the 11th century and then enjoyed an impressive and very expensive meal out in the courtyard under the chestnut tree. The service in the restaurant was really not very good, I think they could have been more attentive. The breakfast was fit for a royal family. Overall our son had his castle experience and loved every minute of it. My husband, who's German, knew the story of Gotz von Berlichingen, so he enjoyed the history of the establishment.
