“Amazing Volcano”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed June 2, 2014

I've been to El Salvador many times and always recommend hitting the interior of the country- too many times travelers stick to the beaches and miss the good stuff. This volcano is super rewarding, with a crater that is far deeper than you would expect, amazing views, and a really cool shell like formation.
In getting there- you should plan to get there early. You can show up at the park to get a guide (which is required) but tours will leave earlier rather than later.
IMPORTANT NOTE- There are a couple ways to climb this... there are two main guide houses- one is a few hours for the hike, and the other is just a short 45min up. Decide which one you would like, and be persistent about which hike you'd prefer when you get to the guide base.
IF you want the longer hike, start at the end of the road all the way up the hill in CERRO VERDE
IF you want the shorter hike, start in the little area which is labeled SAN BLAS, which is between the peak of cerro verde, and the volcano Santa Ana.

The shorter hike to the crater can be done in 30-40 min if you're in good shape, and about an hour-hour 15 minutes to the crater if you take it leisurely..
Spending time on this volcano's rim is 100% worth the trip out there.

“Still great on a cloudy day”

While we were not able to see over Lake Coatepeque the view down into the sulfur lake in the crater was enough to make the two hour hike (four hours return) worth while. Pity we had to wait 1.5 hours for the bus back after finishing the hike though!

“Don't rush, just enjoy - Slow and steady does it!”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed May 5, 2014

This is an awesome hike but there are some things you need to know. First, entry is controlled and you have to have a guide. The good news is that there are guides on site and the don't cost a lot. The bad news is that they are usually teens who are mainly there to legitimize the outing. You will likely have an armed guard at the front and one at the back but that is just they way of life in El Salvador so get used to it. The guide will likely take off on a tear but don't feel that you have to keep up or you will regret it. Take your time. The guard will bring up the rear and they are in no hurry. Take lots of water and a camera and maybe some trail mix or energy bars because it is a long steady climb and it will be hot and you will burn some serious energy. The trail is safe and reasonable but watch your footing once you get out of the tree line. There are lots of loose rocks but most drop-offs are fenced but not all.
The view is amazing and the vegetation lush and thick to start and then big and exotic towards the top and then it is fully barren.
Once you get to the top the guide will likely be long gone and on their way down and the guards will likely disappear too. If you are a straggler don't worry as the path is well marked and you will have no trouble taking your time coming down and enjoying the view. Just don't linger too long if you have a ride to catch. Take lots of pictures and pick a time when the cloud cover is not too low or if it is raining. (We went up in a thunder storm and it was a bit intense). Take several shots at the top to stitch into a panoramic photo.
Note: There are shortcuts between the switchbacks on the way up but resist the temptation to take them as they can be torturous and not worth the risk. There are washrooms at the base but nothing going up except for dense bush near the bottom. The park at the lower levels before you enter the trail is very nice and there are rental cabins if you want to make a day of it but no refreshments except for special occasions so take your own. There are trails in the park and spectacular views and old gardens and orchards to explore. Well worth the stop.

“beautiful views”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed April 30, 2014

After a drawn out 2.5hr bumpy chicken bus ride from Santa Ana we finally arrived at the park. You have to join a guided walk but this was no big deal as it went at whatever pace you were comfortable with as there is a guide at front and back. It was a little over an hour up and the entire way provided great look out points of the other nearby volcanos and Lake Cotapaque. At the top you are greeted with an amazing aqua coloured sulfur lake along with amazing views.
Highly recommended (and we have seen a few volcanos in this part of the world).

The view is amazing on top. We took a guided tour and the security along the way was very good. I am very happy to have climbed this volcano.
