We stayed there with our family. Great value for the price. The location is wonderful - it is true i is more beautiful than one can appreciate from the pictures. The owners made us feel welcome and were incredibly nice. We had a great time exploring the Biological Reserve, which was a lot better than we expected - we saw a family of howler monkeys. Food was great in the restaurant. A great place for a restful stay. Only thing is that it is about 15 minutes from Playa Giones, so it isn't the most conveniently located for surfing. But for relaxing, it is wonderful.

After almost giving up looking for more than two hours for an accesible, friendly and confortable place along Nosara beach, we were the luckiest people to find this piece of paradise...
Lagarta Lodge, located in a hill in Nosara Beach, demonstrated from the very first moment to be the best option we could have found and even excelled our expectations in every aspect!
The sweet, warm hearted owner, received us as if we were coming back home, and support us during our 3 nights stay with advice and useful information.
The rooms are absolutely cozy, clean, and spacious, with an amazing terrace to soak up the sun meanwhile looking to the ocean and reading your favourite book.
The staff is very friendly, the restaurant food is fantastic, the cocktails, the pool, the Sunset Bar, generous breakfast, views, the Natural Reserve in the backyard... EVERYTHING!! no one single complain.... important: you should go by car because is a bit far from the zentrum, basic stores and the beach.
ENJOY!!! :)

This hotel offers everything you need for a couple of relaxing days. The guets service is absolutely excellent! Welcome drinks, friendly and helpful stuff, owners, who appreciate all their clients and help with special wishes, problems or whtever you might need.

The hotel itself is cute with different platform-areas for dinig, having a drink or just relaxing. Furthermore it offers an astonishing view over ocean, forest and river with a great variety of animals.
The rooms are equipped with everything you need, the pool is sufficient and the breakfast buffet is simply delicious!
In any other place you would pay at least twice as much for this kind of service!

Recommend it to everyone!!!

I went with my boyfriend and my parents. The rooms were simple but beautiful. I awoke every morning to a view of the jungle and the ocean just beyond. There are some amazing beaches near by. We kind of disappointed that we were not informed about the cute little surf town a few miles away ( Canas, I think). We only found it as we were leaving and had all of our things in our car, do not leave it unattended at that point. We had also arrived at the beginning of the wet season so we had a night where the bug were really bad. We did have Walt the huge toad that helped by trying to eat as may bugs as he could. The bugs made things alittle uncomfortable, no night swimming and we had to sit on our patio in the dark, but the pool was clean by morning and as long as it rained at night the bug weren't bad at all. It is kind of out of the way but pretty much everything you need is there.

Most confusingly, this property is listed under Playa Sámara, an hour away and a place of a totally different character – but see some helpful reviews at http://www.tripadvisor.com/Hotel_Review-g309247-d299274-Reviews-Hotel_Lagarta_Lodge-Playa_Samara_Province_of_Guanacaste.html

It is run by an extremely welcoming Swiss couple called Regina and Amadeo, who are always available and unstintingly cheerful and helpful. Our trip there from the Central Valley was unexpectedly grueling, with a very slow drive up the Panamericana, hindered by an accident that closed the road for a spell, and a bone-shaking drive up the dirt road from Sámara, as we watched an approaching storm which we would just have beaten had the road not been closed for about 30 minutes just south of town while we watched a road crew repairing a washed-out culvert.

Amadeo proffered a welcome drink and a briefing on the Lodge and surrounding area when we arrived, sitting on the terrace of the restaurant/bar area, which has a spectacular view north from the top of a bluff overlooking the confluence of the Nosara and Montaña rivers, extending north over the Ostional area. It is just drop-dead gorgeous and the sunset bar has to be one of the prettiest spots in a country just chock-a-block full of pretty spots.

Our kids greatly appreciated the fact that there was no curfew at the pool – the Lodge is small, with six rooms and six more under construction and is not overlooked, so activity in the pool - which is a good size and very clean, doesn’t bother anybody.

The rooms were spacious and all enjoy that gorgeous, northerly view. The two we occupied had showers – large ones – but no tubs. My only real criticism, and a fairly minor one, is that the mattress pad was very thin.

The food was great – freshly baked breads and perfectly ripened fruit at breakfast time, with a selection of egg dishes and cereals. The lunch and dinner menu are varied and there was even quite a comprehensive snack menu during the afternoon – all cooked to order from very fresh ingredients, with the exception of the frozen cauliflower/broccoli/carrot mix that seems ubiquitous in Costa Rica.

The kitchen is rightly admired for its seafood fondue, which has to be ordered in advance. We were glad we did. We stayed three nights at LL and didn’t feel the need to eat anywhere else, although a new Moroccan/French place that had opened that week around the corner sounded quite compelling.

In terms of activities, besides the pool and the huge temptation to just soak in the extraordinary view and relax, the Owners have established a nature reserve next to the Lodge, where we saw howler monkeys, coatis, literally thousands of land crabs and a number of birds and reptiles. Nosara Boat Tours and the Boca Nosara Tours riding stable are both adjacent to the property and the Playa Pelada beach is an easy stroll. A few minutes’ drive distant is the Miss Sky Canopy Tours office – these zip lines were the best of the three we experienced, in terms of both the scenery and the extraordinary attentiveness of the staff.
A warm re
commendation, then, for a place we very much look forward to revisiting.

Lagarta Lodge is about an hour's drive north of Playa Sámara, in Nosara - a totally different destination. Playa Sámara is a pretty bay, but ringed with houses, hotels and guest houses, whereas Nosara is not yet extensively developed, with a very rural atmosphere.

The 'real' Lagarta Lodge is correctly listed at http://www.tripadvisor.com/Hotel_Review-g656474-d1881531-Reviews-Hotel_Lagarta_Lodge-Nosara_Province_of_Guanacaste.html and I have posted a review there.

My husband, two teenagers (13 and 15), and I thoroughly enjoyed our visit to Lagarta Lodge. Regina and Amadeo are extremely hospitable and knowledgable hosts. We loved the nature hike with Gabriella and the boat ride with Leroy. The sunsets and views over the Pacific and surrounding hills were incredible. The walk to a practically deserted beach was easy and a further walk takes you to a wide sandy beach popular with surfers. We were disappointed to miss turtle activity during our visit. The breakfasts are scrumptious and dinners are very good. The drive to the lodge is not for the faint of heart. We travelled the 28 km in a driving down pour, negotiating massive potholes and rivers of flowing water. 4 wheel drive is a must in rainy season. If you don't like driving, there is a nearby airport. However, staying at Lagarta Lodge is well worth tackling 'the road to Nosara'.
