High above the dust and dirt of the Nosara area stands the Hotel Lagarta, run by a brilliant husband and wife team, exemplifying fine hospitality. We were staying at a so-so hotel in the area, while on our second day of driving around, saw this place and had lunch there. An excellent meal with a commanding view of the coast and beaches. We asked Regina if they might have an available room, and were told, yes, they had a cancellation. She showed us the standard and deluxe rooms, both just fine. But the deluxe were very new and modern with the best views. So we chose that. We weren't just booked in. Rather, they sat down with us and gave us a nice drink - we had their excellent pineapple-crushed ice drink and told us about the place and the reserve and trails also part of it. We also made reservations for dinner - an absolute must since this is THE place in the Nosara area for sunsets. Sure enough we had a fine table for dinner, which was excellent - a tad pricey but well worth it. We chose the option with breakfast so went down the next morning. A small but packed buffet with eggs of your choice, even a pancake (not run of the mill but gourmet) with real maple syrup, a couple of slices of amazing homemade bread, fantastic coffee, juice and more. Needless to say, you could fill up there for the day. We hiked back up to our room - it's a steep climb - to sit and look at the view below for a few minutes on our private balcony with these Costa Rica style rocking chairs made from leather and footrests. After driving around some more we returned for a nice dip in the average size but pleasant pool. The beds were high quality and lots of light in our unit. We also had a round table in its own view location. The bathroom was large and pleasing and very modern. One problem with the shower was that it tended to leak out so we had to be careful - it's one of those walk in showers. Parking is at a premium. You won't always get a space inside, but they appear to have a guard outside where there is more (uncovered) parking. The inside parking is covered. At night, the winds really come up and bring the ubiquitous Costa Rica smell of burning ... whatever. The views in March are pretty dry. Regina believes November is the greenest time. Overall, we felt good while there and in the end that is what counts.

Room Tip: Choose the deluxe rooms if available. They have a/c; the standard rooms don't. They are also l...

I will return! It was one of the most beautiful spots in the world I visited to far. The views, the room, the food, the gardens, the pool, the sunset bar - it was just perfect! The owners are super friendly, super efficient, super helpful, and very well connected (in regard to guided tours etc.). You absolutely need a car to get there, and to get around, but it's well worth it.

Room Tip: You have the choice between regular and superior room - I strongly advise to choose the latter! The...

We stayed at Lagarta Lodge for 3 nights, looking to combine surfing with birding, and of course this is the perfect place for that. We arrived tired after the drive in, and were immediately asked to sit down on the beautiful terrace and offered a drink. The owner Regina came, with her incredibly warm smile, to check us in right there, so that was a nice start. The views are superb, the nature reserve has wonderful trails, and being away from the surf town is restorative. The walking-distance beach is Playa Pelada, when we went there that same evening to watch the sunset we were the only people there, which was kind of magical. (The surfing beach is 7 rocky 4-wheel-drive minutes by car, so pretty close. If you're a beginner you should aim for reserving a lesson a day ahead of time, the lessons are best taken during low tide, we used Tico Surf and they were very good). We booked two superior rooms for the family and they were huge and airy and beautiful, there was an AC unit but we didn't use it. The pictures on the website definitely don't do the rooms justice. Dinners were not cheap (nothing in Nosara was, really), but the fish was fresh. Breakfasts were a joy, from the outstanding Pico Gallo to the ahh so fresh fruit, and the European touches (Raisin bread! Nutella!). More than anything else, I think, what helps guests settle in and feel comfortable and welcome is the quiet sense of ownership and ... substance that the owners convey. Amadeo starts each day sweeping his beautiful terrace and wiping down the long wooden table, then preparing the buffet plus a la carte breakfast. Regina is everywhere, especially around dinner. They are just very present and calm and this somehow sets the tone for the place.

Some other details: Wireless in the Superior rooms and in the restaurant. Safes in the rooms. Bad roads in and around Nosara. You can order amazing ice cream sundaes at the pool (at least during some parts of the year), this is not well advertised but it was really nice for the kids. Owners speak English, German and Spanish and probably at least 2 more languages fluently. There were guided nature tours in the reserve most days. No coffee machines or TVs in the rooms but there is something special about having your strong morning coffee in a real cup on the terrace in the restaurant, while looking over the nature reserve to watch the tide come in.

Room Tip: Rooms 8 and 9 are superior rooms that make up the whole upper floor of the new wing. Very spacious a...

We just returned from staying nine days at Lagarta Lodge. We initially were going to stay only four days and then switch to another hotel for variation but when we realized we were in heaven, we cancelled the other place and stayed on! The view is one of the best in all of Nosara. (I used to own a house there so I have experience.) It is truly breathtaking to wake up to and the sunsets are legendary. There was a mango tree right outside our room that monkeys and birds regularly visited and I got some great photos. Both Regina and Amadeo couldn't be nicer or more helpful and the breakfasts and dinners are top notch. Make sure to at least have a sunset cocktail there as the view is jaw dropping! The grounds keeper Mateo was so sweet and helpful...make sure to give him a tip.

Largarta Lodge if off the beaten path but that is what makes it so appealing. My husband and I came at the very end of the dry season so it was one of the few places not covered in road dust. Regina and Amadeo were wonderful and very gracious. The view is spectacular no matter what time of day. We stayed in a superior room and I highly recommend it. Sitting on your own balcony in the rocking chairs is so relaxing. Lots of monkeys and birds. The grounds are beautiful and lush even in the dry season! The property is well maintained and they have a lot of hard working people on staff. The breakfast was always wonderful and we had dinner there twice. We had a vehicle so we like to get out and try places to eat. We caugt tuna on a fishing expedition and they cooked it for us for dinner one night. It was to die for! It is a perfect place to get out and walk in the biological reserve and just around the area. My husband loves to surf and there were many options. Not a day that there wasn't good surf. He usually brings his board but rented this time to avoid the hassle and crazy airline fees. He was pretty pleased with the selections. This was our 6th time to Costa Rica but our first time in the Nosara area. It is our new favorite place.

Room Tip: Recommend the superior rooms if available.

First of all, you have to work to get here, as the spot is at the top of a long, dusty (probably muddy in green season) road, so four-wheel-drive is recommended. Once here, you will be treated to a jaw-dropping view. The sunset is unbelievable! We were equally blown away by our superior room, with its own balcony from which we occasionally saw monkeys swinging from the trees. The room was spacious and very attractive. The grounds are extremely well-kept, and the pool a treat. We commented to each other that we have never used a pool more than this hot, hot location!

This time of year outdoor activities are best early in the morning later in the day. I have a feeling that the trail system is at its best in rainy season, when the mangrove swamp is flooded and the area is lush, green, and has an abundance of birds. As it was, we preferred the area by the river, where you can rent kayaks and take a phenomenal boat tour with an enthusiastic guide. An attractive beach is a short hike away, and others within driving distance.

Service was very good, though we tend to value friendliness and genuine warmth over service; this was a bit lacking. Regina has a lovely smile and was pleasant, which somewhat made up for her husband's coolness.

The food was very good. The restaurant is closed one day a week, so check before you arrive.

Overall, a very good choice in the Nosara area.

We wish we had stayed during our stay. We were the first to arrive before sunset. The restaurant was booked for dinner, but we were able to sit on the patio for cocktails and appetizers until after sunset. We did not see the rooms, but the view, gardens and hotel dining room is beautiful.
