Many better choices for cheaper in Ubon

2.0 of 5 bubblesReviewed Nov 27, 2012
In my quest to try as many hotels in Ubon as possible it was time to try the Tohsang. I booked using booking.com and requested a hotel pick up. No response and as i guessed no pick up was waiting. No stress as it is just 100 baht with the airport taxi.
Check in was nice and easy and I was shown to my room. It was like stepping back in time! The only new thing in the room was the TV which had the Australia Network so bonus points there. The room was musty and the carpets old and the lighting very poor. The shower was not too bad.
Within walking distance you are limited to a few Thai street restaurants but that is it. I did manage to fine a place that did excellent Larb for my dinner.
Breakfast was slightly better then I expected with a small buffet section as well as eggs etc cooked to order. The view of the gun carrying guards on the turrent at the jail next door was a nice touch. :)
If the rate was between 500 - 750 baht I would have ranked this much higher but at 1,150 baht it is over priced compared to other places I have stayed.
If you want breakfast then the Natsiri a few blocks away is a better place for just 700 baht. If breakfast does not matter then try the Phadaeng or Pan house for around 500 baht. Again better quality rooms at half the price.

The first impression is massive and well cooled. The reception, rooms and amenities are clean and old-fashioned. The carpets will be clean, but not a nice smell to me. Do not hope to hear the birds when you open de windows, it is al woom-voom-voom from the aircos around. I found there no charm and left. Prices are high. Looks like a hotel to host groups and so.

I would recommend this nice quaint hotel. Not far from the town centre. Easily accessible by local cabs . Taxi fare from town only costs 30 baht. Reception and manager can speak English , which is rare here, and was very sharing on how to go about ubon ratchathani. Room is spacious n clean. Room rates are reasonable and affordable at 180 baht. Room service is available till 1130 p.m. Room water pressure is good. I saw this hotel has their own water tank. Hotel pickup from airport is available. Overall I enjoyed my stay here. People makes the difference. Before I forget, the daily breakfast is good. Delicious. Thumbs up.

This was our first time in Ubon, and, although the location is not the most convenient, this hotel was a good choice for us for a pleasant and comfortable stay in a quieter more residential area. Just be prepared to walk or take a tuk-tuk.

Breakfast was good, buffet-style, with an egg station and Thai-style hot dishes, and served in the restaurant just off the lobby area.

The Reception staff had only limited English, but they tried hard, and between us, with some laughs along the way, we all managed to get through. The Manager spoke better English, and was usually around to try and help out.

The downside of staying here was that it cost 100 baht/hr to use the computer in the lobby, but we used an internet cafe which was just a few metres down the road towards the town, and paid only 10 baht for an hour.

Generally we would recommend this hotel.

For simple fresh home-cooked food in a bright jolly and clean (aircon) cafe, we recommend Pasta and Noodles, on the corner near the hotel. Good food cooked and served by the friendly owner who speaks good English, making ordering easier

Located a little out of the town centre the hotel outside and reception give a good first impression. They offer a free shuttle service to and from the airport, the shuttle does not operate to either the bus terminal or train station but meter taxi prices in Ubon are very reasonable.

The rooms are located on the second and third floors, be aware there is no lift so it was a bit of a climb to my suite on the third floor. My room was large, clean with a comfortable bed and all mod cons such as air conditioning and flat screen TV. The furniture was a bit dated in style and not comfortable to use. The bathroom although nicely tiled was a bit small and dated with the shower over the bath, which seemed to be designed to flood the floor unless you were very careful. The free WiFi was a little slow but good enough for e-mails etc.

Being on the top floor I gained the full benefit of the roar of the planes as they departed, the hotel seems to be under the flight path. Fortunately Ubon is not a very busy airport and the flights do not go on late in the night. Apart from that the hotel is in a quiet location.

The included breakfast had an Asian slant but there was a cook manning an egg station for omelets and pan eggs. I tried the Vietnam soup and it was delicious. I did not eat at the restaurant in the evening but noticed that they had live music.

Even though I got a promotion deal I felt the room was quite expensive for what was offered. There was a sign in the room that listed additional prices if you wanted an extra towel or bathroom amenity, not what I would expect at Tohsang prices.

Room tip: Be aware no lift if you have a problem with stairs.

I always stay here when I visit Ubon, the prices are fair and the rooms are clean, free internet nowadays too.

Room tip: Ignore the price list at reception, rooms are cheaper than the listed price.
