San Juan Surf Resort
Reviewed April 6, 2011

The location is great; the rooms are fine; the scenery is beautiful; the customers and patrons are all great; so why are there no smiles on the faces of the employees? I can't answer that; but I will say that this is the first place I've stayed in my 24 years travelling around the Philippines that the staff didn't make you feel like you were welcome.
I hope the problem can be corrected as this place should be a real gem.

We booked this room through the recommendation of the Lonely planet book. I would like to think of my boyfriend and I, not as picky people. We are pretty good at roughing it. Though when we come to a place there are some deal breakers.

A couple good things about the place were that it was close to the beach and easy to get to from town. Also the good thing was that our room was clean and air conditioned. No hot water, but it wasn't the end of the world.

Now to the bad things:
Our room was nice but the bed was too small. It was not a double and much more like a single.
We also got free breakfast which was nice, however half of the menu was unavailable. They had no fruit, eggs, or milk. The only thing I could eat was basically rice and some type of meat. O.k for a day, but to eat this for a whole week! This was high season! They should have food that is stated on there menu.

Also the service was horrendous! They staff never smiled at you or acted welcoming from the beginning. If I had a question about the menu, to what something had in it or what it was like they had no idea and usually ignored my question. If I went to the counter to order something they would ignore us until someone yelled to get there attention they would come. This happened to other people staying at the resort. Not nice at all.

We ended up eating at much nicer resorts down the beach which had amazing food and were only a 2 minute walk away!

So if you need a place to stay for a night or two stay here, but if you are coming here for more than a couple nights then go somewhere else! People are much nicer at the other resorts and you will have a better time.

We really loved the other places we stayed in the Philippines and are glad the service at the other places were so good that Sang Juan Surf Resort didn't ruin it for us!

When we got off the bus from Manila to San Juan the only thing we had on our minds was to rest and sleep, it was a 8hr ride and not a very comfortable one. When we got to San Juan surf resort the ambiance was very relaxed. The bar had a welcoming feel to it. The rooms were spotless, we got a apparently new room, we heard that there are older looking rooms. The room is very clean comes with a TV and your own bathroom, the shower didn't have hot water, but after a day of surfing in the sun you will love a cold shower to refresh yourself. Since the place is well known in the Philippines it attracts a lot of people from all around the world. We got to meet a lot of amazing people. If you just want to experience to surf this is the right place for you they have surfing teachers available. In the resort they have a surf shop were u can buy wax, rash guards, swim suits, boards, anything u need you can get it there. The staff is very helpful and give good customer service.

if you are looking for a luxurious accommodations, this place is not for you.

rooms:
san juan surf resort is truly for the hardcore surfers who want to surf all day because once you see the room, you're not going to want to stay in it.
i was expecting very basic accommodations and it truly is, but even my lowered standards for cleanliness was blown out of the water when i found that our aircon bungalow room was filthy. i thought the room could have been maintained better by properly cleaning everything, especially the bathroom - which smelled like a nasty urinal that has not been cleaned for months.

although it faced beachfront, the room was locked by a rusted bolt from the outside, with a padlock - nothing like a peace of mind that all your belongings are secured by a padlock! the fridge didn't work (and i couldn't be bothered to figure it out). the bed linens and towels had an interesting stench to say the least, so bring your own towels. our bed literally had a couple of bugs crawling on it. after getting rid of the bugs, it still proved too difficult to sleep as the blasting sounds of terrible karaoke singers from the bar next door droned on til the wee hours of the morning: we slept to and awoke to the terrible sounds of these singers.

pls be forewarned about the bungalows. i would recommend staying in their deluxe rooms as it seemed cleaner and in better condition.

san juan bar and restaurant
good service and good authentic filipino food. however, in retrospect, judging from how dirty their rooms are, it makes me wonder how clean they keep their kitchen...

beach
the beach is great - good waves. my husband and 2 friends decided to take the 1 hr surf lesson for 400 PHP, this included surfboard rental. they each had an instructor and thoroughly enjoyed the lesson.

I love the Philippines. Everywhere I travel I find people to be very polite and provide excellent service. San Juan Surf Resort is the exception to this rule. Whenever my wife and I ordered a meal from their restaurant, we had to specifically ask for everything (menus and to order; and not once did anyone ask us a thing.).

The rooms were to be wanting. In fact, my wife had back spasms after sleeping on the sagging mattress. But overall, the biggest problem was the attitude from the staff. The demeanor was like, "What do you want, and why are you bothering me?"

I would recommend other resorts on the same beach. Perhaps Sebay or some other.
