“Probably the friendliest place in Zanzibar”
Reviewed November 17, 2011

Stayed 3 nights at Karamba hotel in Kizimkazi. It is for Zanzibar standards very reasonably priced and you get good value for Your money. The rooms are small and simple (standard rooms) but spotless and nicely furnished. The open air shower is an extra twist. There is a little nice beach, access to the ocean via a stair down the cliffs and a nice pool with ocean view. The restaurant offers excellent food for and caters for all tastes. But the best with the place is the people working there. From the manager to the doormen, from the kitchen staff to the cleaners - everyone makes You feel welcome, comfortable and relaxed. Their are extremly friendly but also decent and unassuming. In a Zanzibar environment, where You have to be very careful not to pay insane amounts of money for very little or no service Karamba! really stands out!
Lovely place, lovely people. PERIOD.

My stay at Karamba was awesome, and I did return, with a friend and stayed for longer. Finally finding an actual beach where I could walk and had the best swim. Location couldn't be better. Best Yoga. Coolest owners. Calm, quiet without the hustle you have in most beaches in Zanzibar. The lounge area was brilliant: spacious, overlooking the sea, with the best music on the background I could wish for. Everything and anything I needed was not a problem. Yoga in the mornings just brilliant. Ayurvedic food as part of the menu was such a plus. The staff delightful, attentive and cordial at all times. Very clean. I loved the outdoor showers. Beautiful pool. I wish I could convey how warm and welcoming Gemma and Paul were, making me feel like a member of their family. needless to say, I wished I could have stayed longer and I will definitely come back.

Room Tip: hire a bicycle to explore the surroundings, walk into the sea once the tide is low

The first time I stayed at Karamba Resort I knew that I would come back soon.
After overlanding in East Africa with a friend for three weeks we really needed peace and calm and we got it; once more time a truly experience in paradise. I felt so healthy with the best ayurvedic food, biking and practicing yoga, just deep relaxation in one of the most magical enclaves of serenity you can dream of. The turquoise ocean is still on my mind, definitely I will come back.

Everything in Karamba was just what we were looking for. I went there with a friend in August 2011, we relaxed there for four days after a three week trip around East Africa.
After the hustle and bustle of our trip, we were looking for somewhere quiet and relaxing and Karamba provided a such a slice of paradise!
The rooms were tastefully decorated, spacious and very clean, the staff was incredibly attentive and Paul and Gemma made us feel truly at home. The menu offers a great selection of dishes, all of them very tasty, but nontheless healthy. During our stay we had a massage, yoga classes and bike rides to nearby beaches... I highly recommend all three activities!
We are definately going back!!

If you are looking for a very quiet place with lovely food, amazing ocean view and if sandy beaches is not a must Karamba is a perfect choice.

Perhaps a bit overpriced in relation to the standard of the interior but the friendly staff makes you forget about this. The room was simple but clean and left with fresh flowers on the bed after cleaning. The common area offers a lovely sun set with a fabulous Pina Colada from the bar!

I didn`t feel the opportunity to use the beach besides the hotel. It was, by all respects, used the locals for fishing and to collect sea food. (While talking to the locals I understood that the connection to the ocean for the locals is becoming more and more of a problem on Zanzibar due to all hotel complexes along the coast line).

I very much recommend a one day trip to the “Sandy Island”. Avoid the dolphin safari (which has nothing to do with Karamba resort). In my opinion it is very stressful for the poor animals (and small dolphin babies) when 20 boats are chasing them and 50 people throwing themselves into the water. This “safe” dolphin spot is a protected area and apparently the best place along the island for the dolphins to feed. They don`t have much of the choice to go somewhere else! I understand that it is a good income for the locals but do some of the other offered tours and spare the dolphins this cruelty.

I spent 6 wonderful days in this beautiful hotel full of details and nice rooms..with a nice shower outdoors of the room in fusion with the tropical at the beautiful environment. The beaches are amazing..the sunset at the hotel drinking wonderful juices. The food was delicious.. and the treatment very familiar. We enjoyed all excursion suggested by the manager and the staff specially swiming with dolphings and weils close to the hotel. We Rent bicycles and visiting the villages around and discovering the paceful, colorful and authentic culture in that area.
