We stayed here after visiting the Selous, Tanzania and Mafia island, the setting is delightful, the design natural, and it was great fun to share our home with the monkeys, hyax, and elephant shrews. Stunning views from our villa, and wonderful sunsets. Food and staff excellent. Thankyou to Omari1,2 and 3! and apologies to other guests for our last evening, but it was great fun!! Omari 3 a great entertainer. Asante Sana xx

Room Tip: Must do the village tour, and also try a dive!

Thank you very much for staying with us in February and for your very nice review. We would also like to thank you for taking the effort to do the village walk with Rashid and this way to contribute to the village of Kizimkazi.
We are glad you enjoyed your stay and the nice party on the last evening of your stay.
Looking forward to welcoming you again one day!
Warm greetings from all of us at Unguja Lodge

My wife and I stayed at Unguja Lodge for three nights at the beginning of October and had a great time! By looking at the website it’s difficult to get a feel for and appreciate what it’s really like.

The rooms, as one previous reviewer stated, are very big. It gives you the feeling of opulence. Given that it was a once in a lifetime holiday we were OK with that! The furnishings are simple yet very stylish. Everything you need is in the rooms except there are no TVs. For me this was difficult. If I came again I'd like to go with friends so that there was an additional social component.

The pool area is fantastic. The wait staff will bring you cocktails and drinks etc. Mind you the cocktails aren't made as well as we had been accustomed to. E.g. the classics like Pina Colada weren't that great however the beer was!

The restaurant is very good. Each day they bring in fresh seafood which you can choose from on the menu (at dinner and lunch). Breakfast and dinner came with our package. We found the servings to be very generous in size and the quality of the food was sensational- except the coffee (pretty basic stuff if you're into coffee).

The owners are great people. Always happy to chat and help you with questions/concerns. You can get Wi-Fi but it’s only available near the pool.

It’s important to note that the lodge is sort of secluded. In that part off the island there isn't’ much else going on so bring a book, some movies to watch or book something to do each day through the dive centre (part of the lodge). I was there for three days and got a bit bored at the end. Not that the accommodation was lacking, some people really like this about it, I was just a bit unprepared and am also a bit impatient.

Anyway, I highly recommend this accommodation. I would definitely go back! The pros definitely outweigh the minor cons mentioned..Hope you have a great time there and look forward to reading other's reviews!

Imagine Africa recommended Unguja Lodge for its diving centre, as well as its great rooms and service. Zanzibar is a fantastic place for reef-diving and the diving starts directly from the Lodge. Dolphin-watching and snorkelling are also available and for those less active, the swimming pool beckons! The rooms in the lodge have a unique design, melding traditional Zanzibar materials and concepts with all modern comforts. The resident monkeys add to the experience, the food is great and staff very friendly and helpful.

Thank you very much for staying with us lately and for writing this very nice review. We are glad you enjoyed the diving, the food and the villas. Two weeks ago the team of Unguja Divers discovered another new beautiful dive site and called it 'Mwamba Juu'. It's the Kiswahili name for 'The reef up there'. They saw huge and different kind of rays, large murray eals, octopus etc.

Unguja lodge offers wonderful accommodation in large Zanzibar style bungalows, delicious food and many small personal touches that make it quite unique.
All the staff could not have been more helpful and Ralph and Elies are caring hosts, the black tailed monkeys added to our enjoyment.
With so many mediocre hotels on Zanzibar this is a gem.

Room Tip: Rooms 2 and 4 are the closest to the main building which suited us as my husband had a sore ankle
