“Wonderful and relaxing”
Reviewed June 26, 2013

If you want peace and quiet on a relatively small budget then definitely stay here.

Good points:
We had the best room with balcony overlooking the sea. Amazing big comfy bed and the sound of the ocean all day and night.
Food was very good especially the breakfast which was huge.
Staff are really friendly, always on hand to help and the owners are lovely. We felt really at home.
So quiet, no other resorts close by and only one other group of guests there. No tv to ruin the quiet.
Loads of hammocks and sunbeds looking over the sea.
Beautiful sunsets on this side of the island.
Small resort, only a few rooms so it would never be too busy.
Each night they light a bonfire, really lovely. The stars are very clear here too.

Bad points:
Food is quite pricey and their are no options of going elsewhere. The only restaurant in the village (2km walk away) was closed in early June. We would have liked to have seen a lighter option for lunch on the menu, maybe just chips or a snack.
The water in the bathroom is salty.. impossible to get clean. Funny sewage smell in the bathroom occasionally.
The beach is not sandy. We were very disappointed by this. There's loads of seaweed. But once you get used to this it's ok, we just stayed in the resort and looked at the sea instead of trying to swim. There is a nicer small beach just along from the resort where you could swim or paddle. Then tide comes all the way in so there is no dry sand apart from in the resort.

Just a warning if you get the dala dala here then you will get dropped in the village which is 2km away. Too far to walk with heavy bags but there are local taxi drivers charging a hefty price for the ride. The owner gave us a lift back to the village at the end which was very kind.

A wonderful place, we really enjoyed our stay and would come back again.

Room Tip: The room over looking the sea is in our opinion the best although any would be nice as so close to t...

My family and I stayed at Promised Land after a day of staying in Stone Town. The hospitality shown by Shebi and his family, as well as Ali was wonderful. The six of us shared 3 rooms in the one large bungalow, the rest looked like single rooms. We relaxed on the hammocks, took a tour through the village, and had a great time! Highly recommended for those looking to get away from it all, we wish we could have stayed longer.

As mentioned in another review, the food is really fantastic, because of the location (about an hour from Stone town, southern tip of the island, not really anything else in the area), we ate all of our meals there. The food was fresh and well priced.

During low tide, walking through the tidal pools to see the marine animals is very cool. We didn't end up snorkeling but still saw many things. One note of warning! There must be thousands of sea urchins in those pools, pack some water shoes so you don't get poked!

Overall fabulous time, would love to go back.

This must be the most relaxed place in all off Zanzibar! Lovely surroundings and a chill-out atmosphere far away from all the tourist hustle and bustle. Shebi and his family and staff are great and lovely hosts that will make your stay most pleasurable. If you want to get away from it all, this is the place!

The reviews said it would be calm. And it was really calm. The staff is super-friendly. A really nice place!

The restaurant is amazing. There's only one dish per meal to choose from. But the chef is one good cook! The bar is great.

The downside is the beach which makes it difficult to take a swim during the day and the beds were very hard.

We left one day earlier but kind of regretted our decision and always compared our stay at the Promised land lodge with the other places on Zanzibar.

Really a nice place, a paradise, Shebi and his staff are friendly and kind. Very good and huge breakfast. The dinner is not so variuos but axeptable and cheap.
Very good service of dolphin watching and bathing 25$ each on a private boat!
The bungalows are huts, the bed is a little unconfortable but we liked so much our stay...
The toilet has no roof...strange but suggestive!

We just returned from the Promised Land Lodge where we spent a week with relatives and friends for a wedding event which was hosted there. Shebi and his staff did a fantastic job of coordinating a family wedding. They were all very friendly and accommodating. The entire resort was dedicated to the wedding. Custom meals focusing on the fresh caught local fish and Zanzibari dishes were prepared, the beach bar was well- stocked and a wonderful place for new and old friends to relax and have fun. Anu, the bartender, worked hard to personalize and add whimsy to the fun. Many guests chose to relax in the many hammocks, swings, outdoor seating areas, or by the campfire at night. The bongo drums added a fun sense of "island". There are any outside excursions the staff can set up for you including the taxi. If you're looking for an atmosphere to relax, get away from it all, do some beach combing and sun bathing you would enjoy it. It does take a little time to to acclimate to the heat and get used to the more primitive hut living and lack of western amenities, but it works and the trade-off for a secluded and authentic getaway is worth it.

Room Tip: Contact the lodge for any special needs or requests.

We have spent one of our best holidays in Promised Land. Peace, beauty and friendliness are always at hand. The sea view with its low tides is breathtaking, you may reach the local village by foot walking in the water, strong sandals in this case are recommended. At night you will not hear bustling TVs or buzzing air-cons but will be sitting cozily in front of the bush fire listening to the beating drums. If you want to live a piece of real Zanzibar this is the place as most of the Island has been gobbled up by tourism. We are grateful to Sheby and his staff for making our stay unforgettable. Fabio
