Hi Beckst !
Thanks for your visit at the promised land lodge and now is soon end of Ramadan for a big party at the lodge for the staff and the guests!.Iam happy to read your review and to respond to it too.
We have fixed the problem that causes the smell. June ,July month is our winter weather in zanzibar and the ocean is not so attractive due to seaweeds, windy, high waves unlike our summer time after July. we light menu for lunch like fish soup, salad and chips with sea food.
I wish you a nice summer and hope to see you guys again.
Greetings from promised land

This place reached a new low for me, and I have spent a lot of time travelling in africa on a small budget. Looking at other reviews though it seems I got the band end of the deal.

Firstly in favour, the staff were very friendly and hospitable, beautiful location, nice gardens, we were right next to the sea - great swimming, and not too far away a beautiful pristine beach.

We encountered a few surprises - firstly the roof of our hut had fallen apart in places, and it rained in on us once (thankfully only once).. We also made the discovery that the bathroom basin and shower water was salty (which I learned is due to the bore being so close to the sea) - it is difficult to feel clean after showering in salt. We sunk into our mattresses and left indents, no support. The pillows were pillow-cases stuffed with grass...

We were also served raw chicken, and the waiter did not understand any english but would just say OK to everything (which was amusing actually)... but drinks never came and I had to track down someone else to organise a cooked meal.

It's survivable but I would not go back here. We walked down the beach to a resort nearby and drink prices were a third of the price, and accommodation a lot better (however more expensive).

The point of the review is just to let potential travellers be aware of these things that I was surprised about, so they don't have to be! :-)

Room Tip: Can you see daylight through your roof?

I found it here on TripAdvisor and what a surprise. All what I expected : calm, sea and bar !
The owner and his staff are really friendly. The place is a bit away from the Kizimkazi village so there is no noise at all, except the ocean.
The room was clean and all the needs were there.
If you don't want to do so much things and just enjoy a place near the ocean this is the place.

Stayed in Promised Land Lodge in September 2011. Arrivied at night and was a bit difficult to find. But if you ask locals in the village they'll show the way.
Place is big and very quiet. The owner and staff are really cool and friendly people.
In case travelling on your own - might be a bit boring since there are not so many visitors and not much to do. There is no beach (hotel stands on the rocks). But in high tide possible to swimm.
Tap water is ocean filterred water - was a bit surprising, but aparently it's good for the skin and hair.
Place is really promissing if some efforts were made could become a real diamond.
Very good value for the price and awesome if travelling in a big group.
