“clean and cheap place to spend the night”
Reviewed June 25, 2013

We needed a place to stay in La Union en route to Pagudpud and chanced on Little Surfmaid. Very cheap price during off season (1,500 pesos) and clean bed and bathroom. Good service too.

Toiletries gets you towels and small bar of soap, bring your own shampoo.

Room Tip: if you want a good view of the sea, go to the higher floors, we stayed in second floor balcony room...

This boutique hotel is right on the South China Sea at a site known for its excellent surfing. There are sites for beginners, intermediate and advanced surfers. The Resort has several excellent instructors available for all levels of training. At the age of 78, I even managed to get up on the board under the patient tutelege of their chief trainer! (See their website for the oldest surfer, me!). Non-surfing swimmers will also enjoy adjacent sections of the beach. The rooms are clean, airy, and comfortable with a cheerful decor, and the staff friendly and accommodating. The restaurant reflects the Danish background of the owner in terms of the European cuisine available, while also serving Filipino food. My family and I enjoyed our two stays there -- four days each time.

Room Tip: The rooms farthest from the entrance are directly on the ocean and have a gorgeous view.

Spent four days at this boutique resort and enjoyed it enormously. It's small and welcoming; the young staff goes out of its way to make you feel comfortable. The rooms are clean and the service is excellent. For surfers, it is ideal. And for those who enjoy the seaside, the view from the balcony cannot be matched, especially at sunset.

Room Tip: Rooms with a sea view

This hotel took us in at the last minute, literally around 8pm at night. We were not sure where we could stay since we had come in from another island and did not make any reservations. The manager was very nice and gave us the prince room, very clean and nice and quiet. We sleep well and had a wonderful view from the third floor. My husband got to surf a little. We did have to eat our meals at another hotel just down the beach because the cook did not show up, but it was a nice walk on the beach.

We had the pleasure of staying at the Little Surfmaid for New Years and can only recommend this place very warmly. If you enjoy surfing its a great and unique spot that lets you enjoy sun, and and easy lifestyle and everything within a few steps. And for beginners its the perfect place to learn. The hotel offers a great surfschool. We lived in a room where the balcony faced the sea with a view to the surfers and could sit there for hours! The staff is wonderful and friendly, and the hotel is super clean and comfortable.

Stayed three nights at The Little Surfmaid. If you're all about the surf then this is fine. The accommodation is pretty basic but there is room to store your boards and direct access to the point. We moved after three nights to somewhere a bit more family friendly. The manager wanted to charge us for an additional night, but relented.

My family stayed here at the end of Dec 2012 and we thoroughly enjoyed the experience. Right in front of the hotel is an incredible surfing point where there were more than 20 surfers in the morning of our stay. It was my first time to watch live surfing and it was so interesting. What an incredible sport! I am thinking it must be akin to boxing, though, since you really get battered by the waves.

About 100 meters to the left of the hotel was the surfing spot for beginners and my son, along with 3 of his friends, thoroughly enjoyed their first surfing lessons.

The breakfast was also pretty good, particularly the longganisa, which is the local specialty.

The room itself was average - it seems to be a bit old and it's showing its age. We stayed at the "Queen" room which has a separate living area and has a balcony which overlooks the sea. The bathroom, however, was pretty tiny and there was no hot water. The worst of it was that my mom, who was staying in the room beside ours, got locked inside the bathroom. The hotel staff had to destroy the lock to allow her to get out.
