“When Crete met Ireland”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed September 3, 2013

We stayed at the 'Sweet Memory Apartments' in Gouves for 10 nights in August and we had a very enjoyable time.
Rooms were clean, and very spacious, nicely located and quiet.
Nothing was too much trouble for Yannis.
He made us feel welcome and went out of his way to meet all our needs.
It was lovely to sit overlooking the beach in the evening as the sun set, drinking wine and eating Mamma's home-cooked meals.
We particularly enjoyed the 'Stifado' and the 'Moussaka'!
Dora was brilliant too; providing service with a smile at every mealtime!
Not only will we be back; we will also recommend this hotel to colleagues, friends and family.
The apartments are on the coast, equidistant between two beaches within easy walking distance. There is also a very pretty but tiny Greek Orthodox Church overlooking the sea and within view of your breakfast and dinner table.

Room Tip: Rooms at the rear of the complex are the quietest, being furthest from the road out the front.

Me wife and I stayed at Sweet Memory for a week in August and we had a terrific time. Rooms where clean, plenty of space, good location away from all the hussle, very good retreat! Yannis is a top guy, he really made us feel welcome and went out of his way to meet all our needs. It was really nice to sit down near the beach every evening drinking wine and eating our meals, the food was really good and Yannis and Mumma always came round to make sure every one was satisfied with what they had provided. Portions where massive, my wife and I could just about get through the starters! I also want to give a big shout out for Dora, what a service she provided..tops! Don't let her go anyway Yannis, a star.!! I would recommend this hotel to freinds family and will defiantly go back to Crete and stay at Sweet Memorys..! All the best Yannis Mumma and Dora, hope to see you again in the near future..!! TAJ

Stayed here for 2 weeks with my family and we all had a great holiday. It's a fantastic location, right on the sea front. Gouves is perfect. There's some lovely sandy beaches close by (5 mins walk). The apartments are smart and clean. The breakfasts were very good with plenty of choice. But the best was thing about Sweet Memories is Jannis and his charming family. They are very accommadating and always seemed keen to help. Regarding the comments about the bill for the air conditioning I can vouch for Jannis's honesty. When I tried to pay for some breakages he refused to take any extra money off me. He's a good guy, a great host and an excellent hotel manager. Many thanks

Apologies for the cheesy title but I simply couldn't resist.

We spent 10 days at Sweet Memory with family and friends and what a lovely holiday that was. The rooms were large, clean and comfortable. I was very pleasantly surprised to find that the mattresses were extremely firm so I always had an excellent night's sleep. The hotel is charming and just the right size - it's small enough so that if you had to keep nipping back to your room (like you do when you have children who forget things) you didn't have to plough through a huge apartment complex.

The family members running the hotel are friendly and hospitable and nothing is too much trouble. Yanni is very pleasant and easygoing except you need to watch out for one thing. He has a terrible habit of keeping the husbands out at the bar drinking and talking till 4 am then staggering back to the apartment very much the worse for wear. Although to be truthful I don't think that our husbands needed very much persuasion at all!

The bathrooms were not brilliant as the shower cubicles were tiny so the shower curtain was useless, but the good thing was that there was a drain in the middle of the bathroom and a mop and bucket were kept inside so that we just let the water spray out and mop it up afterwards. Hot water was available during the day but for some reason I never got any at night. Again, this was not a big issue as the weather was so warm that the cold water was refreshing rather than chilling. Our apartment faced the sea and we always had a fantastic breeze blowing right through so we never needed air conditioning.

Unfortunately, Mama's cooking is too good and the portions very generous so we all put on a few unwanted pounds. The Sunday night all-you-can-eat barbecue is excellent, thanks to Yanni's secret recipe. We didn't opt to have breakfast in our holiday package but our friends did and said they had their fill of eggs, sausage, bacon, toast, cereal, etc.

The main road where you can get a bus is not very far, but walking in the heat and with small children, I would say it was rather a stretch. However once on the bus, it was only about 20 minutes into Heraklion, and likewise for the airport. If you prefer to stay local, you only have to go around the corner to the main shopping street and there is a sizeable area with bars, restaurants, souvenir shops etc.

The swimming pool is not actually on site, it's shared with another hotel down the road but it's only 2 or 3 minutes walk and there is a children's pool as well as a regular depth pool.

Like all good things it had to come to an end but I think it's safe to say that we will be going back. Good value, wonderful hospitality, efharisto para poli Yanni!

Room Tip: Rooms at the back tend to be a bit quieter but there is less breeze.

My husband my baby son and I have a lovely two weeks at Sweet Memory Apartments. My husband and I have been to the property in the past but this year we decided to come back having our little boy we us. We really enjoy our stay. Our apartment was really nice and big. However what we appreciated most was its cleanness. The room was perfectly clean which was very important having a baby crawling on the floor all day. The home made food is just fantastic and something you should not miss. All meals are cooked with fresh ingredients coming from local markets, including meat and fish. Do not miss Yiannis specialty Mussels Saganaki the best you can ever have!!!!!!!!. Also drinks and beverages were sell at the cheapest price you can find. The beach 150 meters away of apartments is really nice and the waters are very clean and it is in a walking distance if you do not want to rent a car. I highly recommend this property to any one wants to have nice a relaxing holidays.

My wife and I recently spent two weeks at Sweet Memory and could not fault anything. Yanni and family and staff were so friendly and welcoming, and always had time to talk

The apartment was large, light and airy, with the bonus that air conditioning wasn't required.

We had a balcony facing the sea, so it was very pleasant to sit out for breakfast and in the evening.

Some people have commented about a lack of hot water - we always found it was sufficient for what we wanted, so had no complaints.

We had meals at the Apartments a few evenings and can only agree with other reviews, Mama's cooking was of the highest standard (be prepared to put on a few pounds, as the portions were large!)

There are also plenty of quality restaurants - we'd certainly recommend " 2 Friends" - a really genuine warm welcome and good food. Also nearby is "Phillipos Taverna" - the owner again is very friendly, if not a little eccentric.

For us, we'd probably recommend Gouves only as a base for exploring other areas, although we can see the attraction for families. The bus stop is only 10 minutes away and from there you can go to Heraklion and as far as Agios Nickolaos.

We would have no hesitation in returning to Sweet Memory - exceptional value topped of with lovely and caring hosts.

Room Tip: We stayed in room 36, facing the sea, with a balcony having access from the bedroom and living room

We have recently returned from two weeks at Sweet memory Apartments. We stayed in apartment 24 which was on the first floor with a huge balcony. We intended to pay for air conditioning but found that the apartment was so large and airy (2 windows and a door onto the balcony from the bedroom, a large window in the bathroom and another large window and a door leading to the balcony in the living room) we didn't need it. We just left all the doors and windows open and a sea breeze came through the apartment. It was lovely to fall asleep listening to the waves crashing on the beach. There was some aircraft noise which we got used to, but I doubt we would have heard it had we paid for air con and shut all the doors and windows. We always had hot water, the apartments were clean with crisp, white linen and fresh towels.

The restaurant is only a few meters from the sea and it's very pleasant to sit and watch the sun go down with a beer or two. The beach itself is very narrow and rocky and the sea is rough. Having older children, we enjoyed jumping over the waves and body boarding (boards supplied by Sweet Memory), but this beach is not suitable for people with young children. There is an enormous, sandy beach 10 minutes walk away and a couple of smaller sandy beaches even nearer. We tended to have fun in the waves in the morning, have lunch at our apartment and then go to the pool at Kaissa Beach Apartments in the afternoon.

There is a set meal each evening and you can either stay for dinner or not. We were told by Mama that she was making meatballs and mash the first evening we were there. I explained that my 13 year old daughter was coeliac and therefore, couldn't eat meatballs. Mama immediately offered to make gluten free meatballs, so we said we would be down for dinner. The meatballs were superb and my daughters looked exactly the same as ours but without the wheat. She said they were delicious and ended up having seconds. Not only is Mama an excellent cook, she is also very obliging and will do whatever she can to accommodate everyone. If the starter wasn't suitable for my daughter, they gave her extra portions of dinner. You will never go hungry at Sweet Memory and it was also very reasonably priced. The beef stifado was one of my favourites. Dora serves the food, a lovely lady, always with a smile on her face.

Yannis is very friendly and knowledgeable. We asked his advice on several subjects and he was very helpful. He booked our tickets for Water City on line and saved us 15 Euro. He also gave us advise on how to get the bus to Heraklion, which was well worth a visit.

To sum up, we had a lovely, relaxing holiday at a very reasonable price. The apartments are typically Greek, a bit basic but only what you would expect in Greece. They were larger than normal and we had a kettle and toaster as well as a full size fridge and two electric rings. Everything was spotlessly clean and there was unlimited hot water. Yannis and his family are warm and friendly and nothing is too much trouble. We would recommend Sweet memory to anybody that wants a quiet, relaxing holiday.
