Just got back from a week at Amirandes and it was thoroughly brilliant. I am 22 years old, my father is 50 and my sister is 19. We were looking for a 5* relaxing beach hotel with a few activities and within close proximity to the airport. We booked through Thompsons- included flights and taxi transfers in the costs. We were picked up in a nice minibus style taxi and taken straight to Amirandes. This took no more than 20 mins.
The rooms were really spacious, clean and luxurious- there were even tvs in the bathrooms and lovely balconies. The pool is amazing- huge and incredibly clean, and the pool staff are very attentive- constantly offering water and fresh fruit (same on the beach). The beach is lovely and sandy, with crystal clear sea.
We were half board, so breakfast and dinner were included in the main buffet restaurant- there are about 6 other restaurants to choose from. The buffet was always delicious- a lot of choice, especially in terms of different types of fish and meat. Seemed to cater to all nationalities and never ran out of food.
We went to two of the other restaurants- 'Minatour' the fine dining Italian, and 'Blue Monkey' the chinese/asian. They were both amazing! Minatour is based around the old Greek Myth of the Minataur in the labyrinth. It also functions as a mini Picasso museum, with the owners private Picasso collection which is pretty cool. Blue Monkey was right by the sea and the food was extremely tasty. Would highly recommend both. Also you get a discount when you dine at the other restaurants (equivalent of what the buffet costs per head).

I used the hotel gym and sauna most days which is in the spa area- and is free! I thought it was a very good little gym, and there was often an instructor there in case you wanted direction or guidance.

What i thought was really impressive was that Grecotel has its own organic farm which is located in Crete close to Amirandes. This farm supplies all the Grecotels and its produce is really nice. All the bathroom soaps, shampoos, lotions etc were from the farm, as well as the olive oil and other foodstuff around the hotel. This was available to buy in the two shops on the complex.

A helpful tip- there is a little shop opposite the spa that sells snacks, drinks, bikinis, balls, (absolutely everything actually) and it is relatively cheap. Worth buying big bottles of water here for your rooms or the beach/pool (1 euro for a big bottle) as the drinks in the bars and by the pool are really expensive in comparison.

All staff were so friendly. Lots of activities going on all the time e.g. sunrise yoga, pool activities, kids club, volley ball etc. - all quite discreet, did not annoy us and no one tried to force us into joining in.

Will hopefully return to Amirandes in the future.

Room Tip: Lots of different room types- definitely research it out on the website but I don't see how you...

The Amirandes is a very good resort. We stayed there for 5 days in late July August and the the service and rooms were about as good as it gets. The food in the different restaurants was also reliably good with one exception: their version of sushi was a little strange and the nigiri didn't seem to contain sushi-quality fish. The guests were from across Europe, but with a surprising concentration of Russians. The beach cabanas were convenient and always available. We really enjoyed our stay.

We have just returned from the Amirandes and it was a fabulous holiday. The modern design of the hotel was superb and the staff were outstanding. We did have an issue with the room initially allocated but just one visit to reception, with no need for raising voices, and our problem was solved - a room change the next day. My nine year old daughter enjoyed time in the children's club as well as the nightly evening kid's 'disco' and all of us enjoyed the watersports facilities (jet ski, 'crazy sofa', scuba etc). We are not big fans of dinner buffets so in the evenings we were somewhat limited to dining choice, especially with the children. We tended to take alternate nights to eat in the hotel and eat out. The food at the hotel we did not think was expensive but vodkas at €10 a time were a little pricey. Surely we would buy more if they were priced less? The house wine at €33 a bottle was very pleasant. As an English family we were very much in the minority (it was 90% Russian guests during our stay) but that was fine. Without doubt the staff make the holiday - our special appreciation to George, the F&B Manager, who was outstanding. We can't wait to return. A truly wonderful experience.

This was my 2nd trip to this wonderful hotel and it didn't disappoint. From the moment you drive through the gates, you are taken care of.
Our taxi pulled up outside the entrance and we were met by a member of the team who took us through to see the Lagoon and sea view, we were then given cold flannels to refresh ourselves and a glass of juice, whilst registering. Unfortunately we experienced a problem at this point in as much as our room wasn't ready but the solution was to give us an interim room to use how we wanted and to pay for us to have lunch, drinks etc.. By the time we had finished our lunch, we only had to wait about another 45 minutes and our room was ready and we had a great view over the Lagoon, Sea and up the coast towards Heraklion.
We ate all our evening meals in the Buffet restaurant and the choice is very good and standard very high. There are also 5 other themed restaurants that you can eat in, e.g. Italian, Asian Fushion. All staff are very polite and customer focussed.
The hotel is kept very clean and the gardens are well maintained. There is a mixture of accommodation from rooms, suites and villas and lots of little areas that you can explore whilst walking around the grounds. It also has it's own beach area. There is a small gym and indoor pool, as well as a Spa. There is also a 50 metre Swimming Pool outside, as well as tennis courts and a football pitch. A children's club is organised during the day and also a mini disco and there is live music in the bar each night and at breakfast twice a week.
I had a thoroughly relaxing time and have already booked to return for a week next year, as it suits me down to the ground.
However I do think that people should be aware of the following:-
1. The Hotel stands alone, there is a small taverna up the road and a small supermarket even further up the road (maybe 10 mins walk). Gouves is further away and not very large.
2. A large number of planes fly overhead but they are not really that disturbing.
3. If you are English and you like English people around you, then this probably isn't the place for you, as there aren't that many English guests but if that doesn't bother you, then you should give it a try.

Room Tip: Rooms with view of Lagoon and Sea were quiet. Some other rooms may be subject to noise due to child...

We spent one week in late July 2014 in Kato Gouves, the Amirandes Grecotel Hotel. We were very satisfied by the hotel room, the services, the breakfast and the beach. Staff is friendly and relaxed, tries to accommodate your needs, although we rarely asked for anything-no need to ask. Hotel room was as one could expect for a true 5*. Airco was really working, cleaning staff was doing the job. One piece of advise regarding the beach, you should go early in the morning, before breakfast and reserve beds by letting some personal stuff on them (a book, a toy, a t-shirt, etc). Anyway, if you miss this, the beach attendants will work something out for you. The guys n the beach..excellent job! Stavros and the others really want to make you enjoy. they serve free water at 11 am and in the afternoon and also watermelon in between, free of charge. their behavior is friendly, pay attention, remember persons on the beach and are very polite. Congrats! The hotel pool is very large, salted water (probably from the sea), clean by all means. The pool has also a restaurant (there are 7-8 restaurants all together) where you can have a good lunch. The bar is very good as well. All beds, towels, umbrellas... for free of course. The hotel has a free of charge parking area for cars, so if you rent one, no need to worry about parking. Management seems to have a close look on all activities and performance of staff, they want your feedback. There were many families with kinds and I had the impression they were all having fun as well. You reach the hotel by car at 20 minutes driving from the Heraklion airport (17 -18 km). I strongly advise and recommend this hotel in Crete!

Room Tip: book beach beds a bit earlier , before breakfast, directly on the beach by leaving some personal stu...

We visited Amirandes between the 23rd June - 1st July, and cannot praise this hotel and every single member of staff highly enough.
Firstly, we were originally quite anxious to visit a hotel of its size, as we usually stay in properties with 100 rooms or less, and have been fortunate enough to stay in other 5 star resorts both on the island of Crete, as well as in Mykonos and Santorini. However, Amirandes surpassed every expectation we had and I can honestly say, in my opinion, that this has got to be one of the best hotels in Europe, not just architecturally, but from a customer service, facilities and location point of view.

Firstly, it is one of a select group of properties which actually looks better in real life than it does in the photos. The Greek architecture is simply stunning, and the lines of the hotel blend seamlessly into one another to create a wonderfully warm and welcoming property. The lagoon, (which is lit up at night), provides a unique platform which blends horizon and sea with land, reinforcing the effort the Grecotel chain have put in to create such an exceptional property.

The 202 rooms are spaced cleverly across the property, so it really does feel as if you are in a much smaller resort providing intimacy and tranquility at all times. There are multiple locations you can enjoy downtime on a sun-lounger, and no rush to reserve a bed before breakfast. The exceptional pool staff, Yianni and Yianni, will quite literally move heaven and earth to make sure you are comfortable, and will move loungers/umbrellas to wherever you want them. In our case, on the grass in front of the huge swimming pool facing out to sea for the duration of our stay. They bring you fresh watermelon at regular intervals, as well as fresh fruit and bottled water, which I may add, the hotel provides free of charge, something which although may seem small like a small detail, is exceptionally generous and thoughtful considering it was 30 degrees on average and they could quite easily charge 5 euros a bottle for. Christos, who manages the pool restaurant is very attentive, extremely friendly and no request is too big for he and his team.

Every single member of staff we met had no hesitation in greeting you with a smile and conversation, and it is a testimony to the exemplary work of manager Vassilis Minadakis for creating such a wonderfully happy, hard working and dynamic team. All the staff seem genuinely happy to be working at such a wonderful place which of course makes a huge difference to the quality of stay for the guests, and after engaging in numerous conversations with the manager, it is easy to see why.

Mr Minadakis is always available to speak to, and is genuinely welcoming to any suggestion/thought/praise you have for the hotel, and goes out of his way without ever being intrusive to make sure that your needs are satisfied. I think what impressed us so much was the way that they go out of their way, but discreetly, to enhance your stay in any way they can. They even have a member of staff at their airport to help you through check in and security, another small, but extremely professional detail.

The rooms are perfectly decorated, spacious and light, the beds super comfortable and I believe 80% of rooms have a sea view. There is a twice daily turndown, and your room is always left spotlessly clean with a temperature card, water and some chocolates. The breakfast is stunning, you will need to see it to believe it, and there are at least 5 chefs visibly creating all that is laid out for the guests. The food across the 6 restaurants is excellent, and varied, from sushi to Italian to local Cretan food, with all ingredients coming from their organic farm a few miles away. You will never have to leave the hotel for the duration of your stay if you don't want!

We were surprised to read previous reviews regarding the ambience of the hotel guests, some saying that a majority of the Russian guests have appeared rude and not hesitant to show their cash, but we didn't experience any such behaviour, and found mostly everyone to be polite and willing to engage with other guests and hotel staff, creating a warm, friendly and hospitable atmosphere.
The spa treatments are wonderful, and they have a traditional elixir spa as well as an ayurveda spa for you to choose from, both offering lovely and invigorating treatments.

We don't often stay at hotels more than once, however, we would have absolutely no reservation in visiting here again and again and enjoying everything this spectacular hotel has to offer year after year!

Keep up the great work!!!

Room Tip: Sea View, ground floor with huge terrace, room 404.
