“Blue Aegean”
Reviewed October 26, 2013

Returned home on 22nd Oct after having a late season two week hol at the Blue Aegean. Enjoyed the hotel although very quiet the second week - it was closing for the season the day we left. Thought the food generally was very good a very good selection for all meals. Nice pool which after the kids left after the end of the first week was good having it to ourselves. We enjoyed daily walks both to the left and right along the seafront and visited the Aquarium one day which was interesting. Entertainment tapered off dramatically during the second week - understandably as there were only seven guests! - All British who got on very well together.Downside to the hotel as has been mentioned is that the owner has two dogs that he is keeping as guard dogs and some guests were disturbed by their barking during the night, and they are not kept on leads sometimes roaming around the hotel, they ran off twice during the second week. All-inclusive package was adequate and good value for the money, all local drinks and mixers, local wine and lager. We would return to the Blue Aegean as generally good value for money - worked out at £45 a day p.p including flights and transfers, try getting that in the UK.

Room Tip: we had upstairs room which was excellent, had sun on balcony in afternoons.

This hotel has been recommended as good choice for family with little children. I can confirm that, however overall expression had some ups and downs... First serious "down" was experienced immediately when we arrived to the hotel already after midnite - preordered baby bed was not in the room, the reception informed that we get it next day. Alright....... Next five hours I spent killing the mosquitos (do not take the room with bedroom having the windows to back garden). Next day, we and especially the kids looked like having smallpox..... Together with very basic room equipment and experiencing rather special odour in the room was not a good start for 11 days holiday..... But, our friends had the room facing the pool and have not experienced single mosquito. We must have been unlucky ;-) I have travelled a lot, but this reception was the least friendly - probably praying for end of the season. At least, if they smiled little bit more... The pool and the area around is beautiful, we really enjoyed that, and it improved my overall feeling of the holidays. Me and my kids really enjoyed watching the airplanes coming over our heads, the noise was not concern for us, but can imagine that especially for elderly people it could be little bit disturbing. Manager's dogs were much more disturbing, I can only say... Regarding the meals, I have had better already, but it was ok most of the time (perhaps I am just used to different way of preparing meat...), I have enjoyed salad bar the most. The beaches nearby were not that crowded (thanks to end of the season), the sea quite warm, unfortunately mostly with rather bigger waves. Anyway all our kids loved and enjoyed the beach! The surroundings of the hotel rather uninterested, "main shopping" street souvenirs, "branded" goods (Levis belt for 3 EUR etc..)..
I participated at the entertainment program prepared for UK guests (who wants to be millionaire, darts competition, another knowledge contests..) and truly enjoyed that!
Anyway, final statement is positive, as we had good time with our family and our friends, and the Greek or perhaps Cretan attitude could not change it.

Room Tip: Rooms facing the pool (which we did not unfortunately have)

what a dissappointment, the place itself was quite good but worst reception i have ever had.did get an apology next day, never seen barstaff and others sitting around smoking and drinking on duty. barman even complained to one customer who ordered a drink at 2255, all inclusive finished at 2300 but did not include much and no cocktails. FOOD was our biggest disappointment,it was done by outside caterers, breakfast was fine, only had 2 lunches but evening meals were terrible.specials included hamburger, pizza, gyros, mixed grill was some gristly pork with a bit of veg on a skewer. best was chinese which was pork(again) stir fry and noodles/rice. we ate out at some local tavernas incl scorpios and mylos, great food and lovely freindly people. believe they are going back to self catering next season.
beaches were dirty/crowded but walk to Isla approx 20 minutes away. great location with 4 ins
thick cushions on loungers/parasol 2 towels and water in ice bucket for 8 euro s plus restaurant but drinks a bit expensive and quiet.
hotel also under flight path with planes coming in day/night and finally manager kept 2 dogs on site that barked/whined at regular intervals all night. also sited between 2 larger hotels that had entertainment which went on quite late, at least someone was having a good time.
thankfully weather was good and met some greek friends who live near by.
would i go back ... NO

just returned from blue aegean hotel went for 1 week, very dissapointed. The actual apartment was good and the cleaning was excellent.Yes it is 2 mins.from a beach, which is more like a builders yard, and the russians take your towels of the bed and take the bed,not very nice. Ten minutes walk you will come to a much nicer beach, opposite The Island Hotel. Kato Gouves is a very small resort, not as big as Gouves so check you have Gouves, if you want the bigger place. The main reasons for our dissapointment were the attitude of some staff i.e. barman and receptionist very very bad, maybe they only like russians as they were Bulgarian Also the food was a problem ,not for breakfast, which was very good or for lunch which was also quite good, but the evening meal was bad. I have never been to an all incl.hotel which served burger and chips or pizza or gyros as a speciality for evening, these foods are served usually at lunch time. I think that the hotel is too small for all inclusive and should stick to self catering. All of the english people we spoke to have said they will never go back to this hotel. It is a shame, and we have spoke to the manager, who was away on business for most of the week, he was quite shocked and has agreed to look into some of the complaints. So as i said a very big dissapointment..

Room Tip: any around swimming pool

As previous reviews state, these apartments are fab! We were booked into one of the four bungalows, but when we checked in we were given an apartment, which was far superior. We chose to book "room only" but the facilities for self catering were more than acceptable. I would urge anyone booking here to go "self catering" and eat in the fantastic restaurants that are close by.
The rooms were very clean, and the linen was changed regularly. All the staff were friendly and helpful, and there were plenty of sunbeds even though some folks just can't resist "reserving" with their towels! Would certainly recommend and would also return.

Room Tip: We had number 28 Kriti, and it was lovely. Looked straight out onto the pool and the balcony was a p...
