“Never go to this hotel again!!!”
Reviewed September 13, 2010

I am very disappointed. There was a terrrible vacation more on the last 3 days when i had a problem with an employer and when i go to the manager to tell him about and so to fix the problem, the manager start to yeal on me and hi was saying that he is throwing me out from his hotel. So after i payed over 1000 euro for 7 nights on astir beach hotel from crete, the services was awful!!! plus that if you want to sleep more in the morning, you cant because is very noisie. So my advise, if you want a beautiful holiday, dont go astir beach hotel, they dont know how to treat they're guests and they are always bored if you ask them something. Shame!

moved to this hotel after one day stay at the Anastasia in Stalis, lovely clean rooms, very friendly staff and it is right on the beach, down points, not many sunloungers (we went to the beach) and the food although fresh and tasty is a little repetative. if you have young children there is a mini-disco in the evening which always seemed well attended. Overall a nice place to stay.

WE ARE PLEASED TO LET YOU ALL KNOW THAT ASTIR BEACH WAS AN EXCELLENT CHOICE FOR OUR HOLIDAYS ( 28/08- 11/08

excellent friendly staff ready to help and advise
fantastic location: gouves and the people of gouves are friendly and welcoming

the bar staff and the morning shift staff were excellent

the animation was really good but unfortunately we attended only two events as we were all time travelling around

very close to town center on the beach road with a nice view and a clean organised beach

we have been in many places around the world with my lady and we can admit that for the money we paid this hotel is the definition of - value for money .

a grate deal for such good standards hotel

moreover i d like to advise that

around the hotel there are many places to hire a car
Voyager Rent a Car is the best with good rates new cars and helpfull staff
kostas is an excellent boy ready to give you info for the island and tips for your trip and stay regardless of hiring a car or not

if you hire a car from there he will certainly treat you with exceptional customer servise standards

MYTHOS restaurant and MYLOS taverna the best places to catch up with greek specialities

astir beach
mylos taverna
voyager rent a car

my tips to all you

We have just come back from 1 week at the Astir Beach (31.08.2008 / 07.09.2008) and can honestly say we would never go back again.
We are a couple who have travelled to many countries and have often been in excellent hotels, most of them five stars, but also in some four and three stars ones. Meaning that we can truly comment on the category of Astir Beach .
We have always had a curiosity to know the Greek islands, which unfortunately we did this year.
Overall, the Greeks are not friendly at all, and are even abrupt and poorly educated, manners wise.

For the hotel, the Portuguese guests were in minority. In this hotel, most guests are German, French and Russians. However, in this hotel, there was no information to tourists in English, although in my case, because of my French we managed to communicate.
The majority of guests were on the system half board but the all inclusive system was rubbish and you had to pay for almost everything anyway.

In addition, the rooms to being very poor were very dirty, especially the bathroom. We had to kill cockroaches on the floor and on walls of the room.
At the same time, during one week, the sheets were changed only once, when in any hotel, if required this to happen every day.

It is not true that this hotel was renovated in 2007, as in the hotel's page on the Internet. If that happened, it was only in the main building, as in all other buildings, all with two floors, the rooms had no conditions, this was also confirmed to us by the other Portuguese people who were there and complained, at reception, for the lack of conditions.

In respect to food and drink, these were of low standards. The staff were extremely ignorant, not friendly and completely unhelpful and could only speak English when it suited them.
Besides the food being of little variety, the quality was really very weak. All meals were recycled to one of the next day meals. For example, sprouts leftover from the evening meal were made into sprout salad!!
However, you would never go hungry as there was plenty of choice and always fresh fruit to follow (but it was always melon and grapes).

The most disappointing thing about the hotel was the service. This is not only related to the actual workers but also the administration of the team. When we arrived we were given a list of what we could have of drinks as part of All Inclusive (beer, wine, vodka, brandy, ouzo and Bacardi), but was limited to two glasses per person at a time.
And when we would fetch drinks more than once, the employee asked the glasses that had taken before. Often if you didn't retain your glasses you would be refused a drink as there were no glasses behind the bar. At a minimum, this is ridiculous.
The bar staff were miserable with clients. The bar man in the evening, Nicos, was extremely rude.

The pool bar opened at 6 pm and only those who had the all inclusive could not ask for drinks in these bars! There, you had to pay for the drinks. All inclusive, only in the bar inside the hotel. That means that people paid the all inclusive and had to go to the bar inside the hotel to go and fetch the drinks! A true absurdity!
The hotel has only a few beds and umbrellas around the pool, which means that whoever wants to make it to the pool has to go and save a place at dawn.

On the other hand, the beach of the hotel has plenty of sun lounges and umbrellas, not leaving any available space so that we can put the towels, so If you go to the beach, you have pay € 6,00 euros a day for two sun lounges!
It is the only hotel I know where you pay to occupy a sun lounge of beach is that of the hotel. Even in Greece.

The daytime activities very rarely happened and we sat bored while the entertainment team seemed to be having a marvellous holiday. There was no activities for the children and at night, the evening 'entertainment' was very poor. Entertainment was rubbish.

The general feeling of people who were there was that the hotel has made the guests feel uncomfortable and prevent them from enjoying what they paid for.
So I do not advise this hotel to anyone.
Believe it, I also saw the criticism in this hotel on the trip advisor, but it was too late because it could not change the hotel. For people who speak well of this hotel, I think this is due to the fact that do not know good hotels, particularly in the Caribbean where the resorts are a real luxury. Even in Brazil and Cape Verde, hotels, 4 stars are incomparably superior in all aspects.

The hotel is classified as 4star and in my opinion this is an overstatement, in fact it has no category for more than 2/3 stars .
Hence,do not commit the same mistake as I did by giving the benefit of the doubt to the hotel. Do not come here!

Finally I want to warn all those who still wish to come to this hotel or another hotel, do not rent cars in the car rental stand which is right next to the Hotel Astir Beach, called VOYAGER RENTAL. The person responsible for this stand is completely crazy, as he came to our hotel and made a scandal due to the fact that, in his view, the car's system indicated that the remain fuel was less than 2 km that should have been delivered. In addition, he still wanted to force us to pay for the cleaning of the car, because the carpet had sand from the beach!!!

Due to our refusal to do that, he even threatened us that he would wait and make a on us and we should be careful when passing by his office.
Hence, be careful because this guy is dangerous!!!!!!!! In the same place, there are many booths where you can rent a car. So do not run these risks and they have with lower prices too.
When negotiating the car be sure you ask always for a discount. We managed to get a car of seven seats for € 50.00 / day (and registration). Note rent cars in VOYAGER RENTAL (I put a photograph of the stand to make no mistake, okay ?).

Our advise "astir clear from this one.............We certainly will not go again!

We have been home for a week now after spending a lovely fortnight at the Astir Beach Hotel.
The summer season in Crete doesn't really begin until May so the Hotel had only just opened when we arrived. We had previously been booked in at another Hotel in Anissaras but were notified 2 weeks before we went, that it wasn't ready to open. We didn't mind the change as we hadn't visited Crete before so it was all new to us!
Having read all of the previous reviews, we went with an open mind, but were pleasantly surprised. We had a room at the front of the Hotel, with a sea view (we were expecting inland view), the room was clean and comfortable, plenty of clean towels and bedding! Floor mopped daily! The only grumble was the small shower with a nylon curtain that stuck to you as soon as you turned the water on! Other rooms had a bath apparently!
The food was ok, only grumble there was that it wasn't kept warm enough!
For the first week, there was a party of 14 German people, an English family of four, and us two! Quite a lot of Greek people came at the weekends for a couple of nights or so but mostly it was very quiet. The staff were all very friendly, even the Manager that we had heard wasn't too polite. He was ok, in fact, on our last day, we had checked out in the morning but our flight wasn't until early hours next day, he saw us sitting in the lounge at 7.30ish and told us to go have a meal in the Dining Room!!!
We accepted, and had a bowl of soup or whatever, didn't like to tell him that we'd already eaten out!!!
The pool area was good, we dont swim though, but sat there every morning for an hour or so.
Gouves itself was beginning to open up, each day another bar or shop would be getting ready to open. The locals were the friendliest of all the Greek Islands that we have visited. Vangelis at the Asteria Taverna was very welcoming, gave us gifts on each of our nights there.
Weather was great, if a bit windy, well very windy really!
We expected temps in the mid 20s but first week it was mid 30s, dropped a bit to mid 20s then second week back to mid-top 30s, the morning we left it was 43! That was April 22!
We had a great time, can imagine it's a great place to be in the high season!
Happy holidays!
