“Not 4* as advertised, very dissapointed with room”
Reviewed October 22, 2006

On arrival we were not that impressed with the greeting we received, we were given a small tumble of orange and a set of keys for our room, there was no help with our bags and we struggled to our room which was a building outside of the hotel main building , it was dark and a good walk to our room. The room smelt of sewage in the mornings but cleared by the afternoon food was just warm and below required heat for health & safety of food (ie) meat & chicken. The menu was pretty much the same on a daily basis, althrough the day staff were more polite, the entertainment was poor, the rooms were clean but very basic the shower was half a metre from the floor which meant that you Had to hold the shower head in one hand and wash with the other, it was an add on not a proper shower,in our room we could not use the bath because the taps didn't work. There was some aircraft noise but not that bad,I have rated it wellbelow 4* because of my room and its contents, but we did not see any other rooms. We did speak to other holiday makers and they were of the same opinion

I spent three days here in early October. When I arrived I asked for the air conditioning remote and the desk clerk and manager told me it was not longer available. Apparently they don't provide air conditioning after a certain date in the year. The fact that it was boiling hot didn't seem to make much difference.

The bigger problem was the mosquitoes. I couldn't open the windows to let in any fresh air because there was a large infestation of mosquitoes on the property. Each room had a "mosquitoe machine" but it didn't work because it was electric and the electrictiy goes off when you leave the room. Even with the windows closed they got in so I had both heat and bugs.

The management was pretty unhelpful about it but I did manage to get them to spray the room with insecticide on the second day.

I would have left and gone to another hotel but it was part of a package.

All in all, this is hotel is about the worst experience I've had and I couldn't recommend it to anyone.

Booked half board, but emailed hotel to enquire if we could upgrade for a drinks package, or all inclusive. Prompt response saying that this could be arranged on arrival. Arrived in the early hours of the morning and was told the general direction in which to find our rooms. Rooms OK, a little on the small side, but clean. Loads of mosquitos. The noise of coaches arriving throughout the night, the end of the disco and the local wildlife (including a dog, donkey and a cockrel) was irritating. The hotel is split into three areas. The new building, where we stayed, the two old buildings (where we had our late check-out stay) and the bungalows. When we went to the reception the staff seemed confused and stating they do not provide a drinks only package and we could not upgrade to all inclusive for only one weeks of our stay. We went to see the General Manager and the problem was resolved. The dining room and outside dining area were clean and well staffed. The catering was focused towards Italian guests which was ok, but a little boring for two weeks. Chips served with every meal including breakfast. Daytime entertainment consisted of an annoying young group of people called the animaters, bellowing " aqua gym, crazy golf, volley ball". The evenings were dead, not many British people to speak to. The bar area was boring. Rarely did they play music. A lovely piano was sitting on a small stage area, locked. The animaters, a few nights a week bellowing "bingo, cabaret". We went to the 'caberet' in the first week, this consisted of the animaters miming to various cd's and a bit of a dance. Do take a pack of cards with you and pen and paper for hangman, that's as good as it gets. The laundry service was good. Clean towels everyday, clean sheets. We booked a late check-out room for 30 euro each room, and were given rooms 2 and 4. These rooms are located in the old part of the hotel, they are ground floor. Very damp, and you could smell it. A crack behind the door you could put your hand in, mosquitoes, with evidence that other people had had problems. The decor dated to the 70's, the beds were almost on the floor and the rooms had no natural light. Our friends found other guests hair in their bed. In the en-suite the mastic was mouldy and the grouting needed replacing. The shower head in the bath was at knee level and there was evidence that the room had not been cleaned properly. The noise of being under the flight path was more evident here. We went to reception and was told that the rooms were being refurbished, uh, what good was that to us? None of us will return to this hotel.

We hired a car and did our sight seeing, very much worth while. The trip to Spinalonga Island was great. The long drive to Zeus' Cave and the steep climb was worth it, but you should be reasonably fit for this. The local people were very friendly helpful and weloming.

We arrived in the early hours of the morning and were asked to walk thro' the hotel, turn left and follow the signs. This took us approx 150/200 yards away from the main hotel thro' some gardens to a separate building (had the ladies been on our own not a very pleasant trip late at night) We were expecting to stay in the main hotel and were not aware of the annexe until our arrival. We approached the Reservations Manager to discuss this. He was very rude and aggressive to us and would not let us speak. He told us the main rooms in the hotel were being refurbished and did not know when they would be finished. On the Friday as we left on the Tuesday the rooms were being occupied. We were not offered one of them! The brochure made no reference to the annexe and we were advised the annexe would be mentioned in the next seasons brochure.

We did not let this spoil our holiday which was very enjoyable. The entertainment was limited, the food was good but very repetitive and the service on the whole ok. We would not return to this hotel or the resort.

I spent a week recently at The Marina Hotel, with my sister. As we are both in our sixties, the fact that it is a quiet resort did not bother us. However, I would not recommend it to anyone who likes a busy nightlife. The Animation team were young and enthusiastic, providing a varied daytime and evening programme of events. They were friendly and polite, and did not pester you if you were not interested.
Our room was spotlessly clean and, although, not luxurious by any means, perfectly adequate. When we first checked in, we were disappointed to find we were not in the main hotel, but in a block a few minutes walk away. Later, we realised that this was probably an advantage, because it was very quiet and peaceful.
The food was a little repetitive, with not a lot of choice, although there was never a time when we couldn't find something to eat that we liked. Also, presumably because it was early in the season, there was only one restaurant open, contrary to what it had been said in the brochure
The staff were mostly friendly and helpful, although we were not at all happy with the treatment we received from Brigitte, the Hellenic Voyages holiday rep.
To sum up, the holiday was very enjoyable, and good value for money, although we didn't think The Marina warranted it's 4* status.

AZISEEIT. The rooms are simply furnished and clean. The beds are firm and comfortable. The bath/shower worked fine, with plenty of hot water. Sufficient cupboard/wardrobe space. Not luxurious by any means, but comfortable for a holiday. Noisy at times. The noise was caused by other guests, above, below and to the sides of our room. By aircraft [14km from the airport]. Also by cocks crowing and dogs barking [no donkeys this time]. It starts at first light. Nice gardens and grounds. Date palms, pommegranites etc. Three pools, one indoor and heated. The staff are lovely people, nice, polite and helpful. Some of them are real characters. You can buy newspapers in the hotel shop, The Daily Mail, The Sun and The Mirror. I enjoyed the food in the restaurant, it is buffet service and wine waiters. The bread is especially good. The entertainment in the evening was by the "Animation Team", [No-Honestly they were very good]. They put their hearts and souls into their work. They worked very hard to entertain us. The bus service is good and cheap, a bit of a hike, about 800km, uphill to the bus stop though. Stop No 11 or 12. There is plenty to do and see around the island. I made the foolish mistake [at the age of 61 and unfit] of walking the 18km Samaria Gorge. Dont even think about it unless you are fit. I did it though! Gouves is very safe to walk at nights. The Greeks are friendly. There appears to be no crime. Crazy drivers! THATS IT. GO THERE.

We chose Gouves as we like quieter areas were we can relax. Chosing this hotel as it was advertised as 4* and suitable for families we booked the A/I and paid extra for two bungalows.

The hotel appears very 70s and sadly most of the furniture appears to have not been updated and replaced.
The bungalows looked nice from the outside but were just larger rooms. They were dark with dark furniture and considering the amount extra to stay in them they added no additional comfort.

It has two resturants but only the buffet one was open.
Food was repetitive and catered more for the large amount of italian guests, the children had to fight there way through the childrens section due to the amount of adults that used it. Who many had the attitude that adults should be fed before children.
Although i will add that the resturant staff were helpful and friendly.

Evening entertainment consisted of a babys showtime and then the later shows were a series of various sketches and acts by the team. Unfortunately these were in mainly in italian, french and german so english guests found them difficult to understand, children got bored and gave up in the end.
The second week we had many nights of music in the bar area but most of this was ballroom dancing. We did have a dance competition and yes this was also ballroom dancing.
Although i will add that the daytime sports with the lads could be good fun. Evening was sheer boredom.

Children took to the pool table and air hockey etc which were coin operated, but make sure you have plenty of change apart from being costly the reception staff were not very willing to provide change to the kids but not a problem when adults asked.

Gouves itself was quiet and the locals were friendly. We spent most nights in the Brits sports bar (opposite the irish bar) Thomas and Anna made us very welcome. If you like football this is the place to watch the matches, Thomas is a Liverpool supporter and loved to meet other Liverpool fans. He showed all the matches and its got a great atmosphere.

The waterpark is also worth a visit great place to loose the kids and even bring out the child in us oldies.

Yes i will visit Crete again and i would return to Gouves. But i think i will go self catering.
No i won't return to the Marina Beach Hotel
as im not very good at ballroom dancing.!
I wouldn't recommend this hotel for families it would appeal more to couples.
