Just returned from a fabulous vacation in Crete. I chose Gouves Mare Hotel after reading numerous reviews here and was not disappointed. We arrived at 9 a.m., our room was ready and we were even offered a late breakfast. Our room was quite large with cathedral ceiling and sea view, spotless. The hotel was half empty since the season was nearing an end but the breakfast and dinner buffet was plentiful. Every day there was a Greek special. The only drawback was the limited wine list. Gus at the reception, Marianne and all other staff were very friendly and helpful. The pool area is relaxing and serene, there were rarely people during the day since the French and British who stay there mostly went for daily trips. We have a four year old girl and she liked the small playgroung between Gouves Mare and Gouves Sea. We had lunch at the bar by the sea every other day. Sofija always greeted us with a wide smile. The food there is simple but very good. There is not much going on in the area since the hotel stands at the end of Gouves but that suited us just fine.

Marianne and the team at the hotel are very helpful and friendly. The room was a good size and kept spotlessy clean. The breakfast and evening meals were varied and of a very good quallty
Plenty of space in the hotel to relax and around the pool areas. The decor and furnishing were of a high standard.
A great place to stay if you want to chill out. and the beach is just a few meters from the hotel entrance.
Not much going on in Gouves (perhaps due to nearing the end of the season)
The trip to Samaria Gorge is a recommended but is a little to far to go from Gouves ( 4 hrs + on the coach)
Only not so good points about the hotel - beds mattress very hard and Gouves is under the flight landing path for the airport so plane noise can be annoying especially late at night.

We stayed one week at Gouves Mare from 15th to 22 Sept 2011. We had a package with Thos Cook. We are aged 71 and 73.
We chose GM largely due to the excellent reports we read here and were not dissappointed although there are some issues to be aware of. Mainly that Gouves is a very very quiet place and a bit scruffy. We were on half board although normally when going to Greece we prefer the evening tavena scene. We were pleased that we had made this choice as there did not seem as many eating out opportunities as we have been used to. Much has been made of the beach but although sandy the main area was almost entirely taken up by beds and umbrellas, at one point I counted 8 rows of beds from the waters edge up to the sea wall needless to say we avoided this and instead if we wanted to sea bathe were turned left at the beach road and walked to another beach with fewer beds etc and some good open space!
My wifes birthday was during our stay so 3 weeks before I emailed the hotel and asked for a pool or sea view room and received back their OK. On arrival however we found that we had a back view room. I queried this and was told they could move us to a suitable room following morning. The room that we had first was in the original block on the top floor and the double bed was on a mezanine reached by an internal wooden staircase 3 other single beds were downstairs as was the bathroom. This would have been ok for younger guests but at my time of life I need to make nocturnal visits to the bathroom and had we not have been moved next morning I would have had to sleep downstairs in one of the single beds. All first floor rooms in the main building were like this and would be a problem for some guests. The new room was in the new block and on one level this a main room with 2 single beds, fridge and a separate bedroom with double. Nice balcony overlooking the pool and excellent aircon which is not charged extra. The pool is nice but a bit shoehorned in, We were a bit disappointed to find only 4 umbrellas but it has to be said there were five static thatched versions in a lawned area below the pool which some obviously preffered. There was no pool bar until the hotel bar opened at 5.00pm. To get any refreshments you had to walk down to the seafront cafe which opened at midday and was a good little walk and interrupted the sunbathing. The whole pool ambience was one of utter peace and total quiet which would not suit everyone.....
For us the food was excellent. There was a full english breakfast each morning which we followed with greek yoghurt and honey and a continental version which did not seem to suit the many French guests. The evening meal was usually excellent as well with tasty original Greek dishes. This is not a "pile it high" type of menu that one finds at hotels these days and I did hear some grumbles about few meat dishes in particular that "mince was something we made out of leftovers" but this referred to the previous evening when we had one of the most delicious mousakas that I have ever ever tasted!
We normally expect somewhat rustic habitation when holidaying in Greece but we can honestly say that the public areas and rooms were extraordinary with lots of marble and luxurious seating thoughout. Extremely clean throughout and we concurr with the many compliments about the hotel staff. All in all this was an extremely good choice but if we were to return we would budget for a car for the whole week.

Kalimera,

During this new season, many things have changed about the food. We propose only greek dishes to our customers because we have the strong will for you to discover and enjoy the simple but flavoured greek gastronomy.

The all inclusive system starts from 10 a.m to 11 p.m to enjoy our local drinks.

Our french speaking animation team propose some friendship and funny moments with you in sports, animations, dancing and show events on their weekly program.

But sure that our small but family business hotel wish you enjoy the best holidays as possible.

We really hope to see you soon here

Best regards

Stayed here for 5 nights in Sept 2011. Great location, a short walk from the nearest bars and restaurants, and about 10mins to the resort centre.

The hotel is lovely, fantastic pool area and nice buildings. Staff are really helpful.
The resort doesn't have much going on, so best for a relaxing holiday. The restaurant menus aren't very exciting - all very samey. I think staying here for more than a week would be boring in terms of the area.

They did have an overbooking situation when we stayed, meaning we had to spend one night in the sister hotel Gouves Sea (quality not as nice as Gouves Mare) but staff were lovely and gave us a free drink, free half board for a night and free late checkout, so we felt compensated for this.

Our room was fab - a corner bath, hairdryer, double bed, nice decor and just by the pool.
We'd stay at the hotel again but not interested in Gouves as a resort. All in all, a great place to get away for a relaxing break.

My husband and I spent a week here in September 2011. All in all we were happy with the hotel. Gouves Mare is definitely supposed to be better than Gouves Sea, so stay there if you can afford the extra cost. In Gouves Sea there is no TV and internet only in the hall. Nevertheless the nice staff (Gus and Maria) put us into another room where internet was available as it was closer to the router. It was really important for me as I had to prepare for a lecture at the Heraklion University, as my trip was a mixture of work and holiday.
The breakfast was excellent compared to what I usually get in hotels and the good buffet dinner is also a cheap alternative to restaurants (9 euros/person). The only problem was the mosquitos in the balcony and the room, so be prepared for them in the cooler months (June and September)! The shopping street is a bit further off from the hotel (1 km) but it is a nice walk in the evening and we definitely needed the excercise after the good meals we had. :) Gouves was a bit more quiet than we expected compared to our trip 2 years ago but everybody was complaining about the financial crisis, and lots of shops were closed down. If you prefer a livelier nightlife, choose Hersonnios.
Nevertheless we had a great and relaxing week there.
