What can I say that has not been said before? (many times) The Artemis is a special place, that delivers much more than you could expect from a holiday. The focal point at the complex is a very successful bar / diner that occupies a prime / shaded oasis, adjacent to the large pool. You could spend your entire 2 weeks here without leaving the site.
We enjoyed trips to Hersonnissos, Heraklion and Malia (during the day) using the local bus service. The fares are cheap, and run every 15 minutes.
To go further afield, we rented a car (30 euros a day). Highlights include Chania, the war graves at Souda Bay and Elounda.
It is understandable that people revisit this place time and time again. Thanks Sotiris, girlfriend (the Lithuanian one), Stavros and Artemis for a great holiday.

We stayed in a one bedroom apartment in the old block. The apartment was pretty good on the whole. It was clean, freshly painted and the bathroom was spotless. The window in the bathroom had mesh on it so it kept out the mozzies when you were showering which I thought was a brilliant touch. We were really impressed with the bar/pool area. This was very well maintained, very clean and a pleasure to use. The owners are really friendly and welcoming. The accommodation isn't far from the beach, I'd say about a two or three minute walk. There are lots of tavern's/restaurants in Gouves. I was pleasantly suprised as the info I had read before we went led me to think that there wasn't a lot of choice, but we could have eaten at a different place every night of our 2 week stay. Once you get down to the beach if you turn right and walk for about 10 mins and turn right again by the broken road (that's how it was described to us) you come to the main restaurant/bar area. We didn't use this much as we prefer to eat overlooking the sea. We never had a bad meal the whole time we were there, and we tried quite a few places, but the best has to be the Paradise Restaurant & Bar on the beach road just before the church. The stifado was to die for and it is freshly made every day. The only down side to Crete is Heraklion airport. Not sure what our tour operators do but Thomas Cook made us queue outside the airport before check in. As it happens it was for only about 45mins but that was enough. Although you are under cover it is still hot and with the buses dropping off and giving you blasts of hot air it seems to be an eternity. I dread to think what it is like in July/August. We have been to Crete quite a few times and can't remember having to do this before. Up side of this is that we didn't have to wait long once checked in for boarding. Would this put us off going back - no way - but we think that we might consider booking private next time and perhaps a budget airline (that doesn't make you wait side the airport!)

Having never stayed in a 2 star apartments before we didn't know what to expect. Fantastic apartments where Sotiris and his lovely family made us feel so welcome from day one. For the first time ever could get a sunbed any time of the day :-) food was so good at the apartments we didn't go out at all for our lunch and barbeque night was amazing food and entertainment. We have been to greece for the last 3 years and this was the best accomodation by far. Have never been to a place where everyone was so friendly right down to the lovely girl who cleaned our room on a daily basis. We both made so many lovely friends on this holiday and will most definately be back :-))))))))))

We stayed at the Artemis at the end of October 2010 and felt that we got what we paid for! Our apartment was in the block to the rear of the small complex and it was the usual Greek accomodation - hard beds and small shower. However for a week is was OK. The air con made lots of noise but was inadequate and the weather was unseasonably hot which made for uncomfortable nights. The family who own/run the Artemis are very friendly and breakfasts and lunches at the pool bar were good. The Artemis is on the western side of Gouves and the area around the apartments is very run down. There is one taverna nearby (which we found - there may be more) which was OK but the main restaurants at the sea front are a fair hike away as is the 'strip' with bars and disco's and it is for this reason that we would probably not return to the Artemis.

I stayed at Artemis Apts with my wife and 1-year-old son. It is a family-run business and all the owners are friendly. However one thing that really put me off was the fact that they charge extra for the air conditioner. They don't mention that anywhere on their webpage, or on arrival, but they DO mention that all the rooms are air-conditioned. And travelling to Crete in August, you really can't survive without airconditioning. They don't tell you about the extra charge until it's time to check out and pay, at which point you're rushing to catch your flight back home and there is no time to argue. On the other hand the hotel itself is great and the rooms very spacious for the qyuoted prices. The location is quite convenient, being close to the capital Heraclion. What I really appreaciated is that the hotel is family-orientated and they will give you a baby's bed free of charge if you need one. On arrival the room wasn't very clean but after the first night the owners realised it and made sure the room was properly cleaned every day. Overall we had a great stay but I found the incident with the air-conditioner very unprofessional.

We have visited Artemis Apartments once every year since 2006, and twice last year. We love it there. Whenever we have holidays elsewhere, we constantly compare it to Artemis. We never used to go back to the same place, but truly love visiting here. We have visited twice in May, twice in June, once in September and once in October. Every time we have been there we have had the same friendly welcome. The apartment complex is small enough to make it a friendly place, everyone seems to say hello to everyone else and chat to each other in the bar. The weekly barbecue is great fun and the food is excellent. There always seems to be plenty of sunbeds there. We have been 5 times as a couple and once as a group of 8, which included 2 of our children and their partners who when we visited were in their early 20's, my parents who were in their late 60's and us in our mid 40's and we all loved it. Also our youngest son and one of his friends have been separately,(late teens when they went) and they loved it too. So it appeals to all ages. Only a short cheap bus ride from Hersonissos, Stalis and even Malia, if you want something a bit more lively. Apart from the barbecue night, there is no entertainment at Artemis, which suits us.
There are plenty of Tavernas in Gouves, our favourite is still Phillipos, which was recommended to us by a British couple who live in Gouves the very first night we stayed there. We also like Davina's, which is the opposite end of the resort on the beach and Elotia which is in the resort centre. We had ignored Elotia on our first few visits, as we thought it was a snack bar/pizza parlour, but definitely much better than that. Although last time we went they served frozen chips, I'm sure we hadn't had that before, normally, the food is homemade. Phillipos' Taverna is up a side street by the Church on the seafront. The food is excellent, much cheaper than anywhere else and the service in fantastic. Phillipos cannot do enough for you. Again the food is homemade, even the dolmades is made by Phillipos' Mother and not bought in, which most of the other restaurants do. If you go to Pano Gouves (I think Pano means upper and Kato means lower), which is the Old Village, be sure to go to Spyros' Taverna on the corner. He serves Meze during the week and also offers lamb or pork in the oven with oven roasted potatoes on the weekend. Both the meze and the roast meats are both excellent. He is also quite a character.
We cannot recommend Artemis apartments enough. Whenever we stay there, it seems like the majority of the people there are return visitors which says it all. In case you are having trouble finding it, it only seems to appear on Direct Holidays, or you can book direct with them www.artemis-apts.com.
I would say that Artemis Apartments are suitable for Couples, Families and groups of friends. Everyone really, except for the '18-30' type holiday. It would probably a bit too quiet for them.
Looking forward to seeing Sotiris, Ieva, Stavros, Artemis, Demitri and possibly Michaelis when we visit again this year! :-)

Apartment basic (but nothing unusual for Greece). Cleaned every day apart from Sunday. Our apartment was just 5/6 steps away from the pool. Pool and surrounding area well kept. The advantage of the pool is that it has actual steps going into it from one side as well as the usual ladders which was great as you could just sit on whichever step suited you to keep cool. Snack bar food really nice. Stavros, Artemis, Sotiris and Ieva look after you very well. Sotiris makes a point of coming to greet you on your arrival - if its a daytime flight. Sunday BBQ well worth it, plenty of food and drink and Karaoke afterwards is also good. Restaurants we visited: Atlantis, Feloxina, and the Chinese Restaurant (there are 2 but the best one is next door to the Indian Restaurant where Den (the owner) is a fantastic chef - the food brilliant. Really didn't want to come back to Scotland. It's a shame that all the All Inclusive Hotels have ruined business for restaurants and self catering establishments.
